We studied tapeto-retinal degeneration in the offspring of Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) and Wistar albino rats. Normal ERG values vary according to skin pigmentation: thresholds and implicit times are different. We believe the best experimental material is to be found in the affected pigmented offspring. Evolution of the degeneration over more than 9 months has been observed before extinction and the expressivity of the disease varies from one individual to another. This animal model closely resembles the ERG findings observed clinically in certain pigmentary degenerations of the retina.

Fluoridated drinking water (30 mg and 100 mg F per liter) was used to induce rachitic changes in rats fed a vitamin D free diet containing calcium and phosphorus in a ratio of 1 : 1. Supplements of vitamin D3 (70 IU of cholecalciferol per week) completely prevented the rachitogenic effects of fluoride. This protective effect occurred despite evidence that vitamin D enhanced the intestinal absorption of fluoride.

Social contact behaviour induced by spreading cortical depression was studied in rats. The controls looked for and remained in contact, whereas between the rats with spreading cortical depression and their other partners there was no contact. This phenomenon is due mainly to the absence of an active urge for contact. Previous researchers have reported that rats placed upon a feeding regimen such that they receive only 2 hr of food per day (meal-fed rats) develop hyperinsulinemia at the time of the day associated with feeding, even in the absence of food. Erythropoietin (ESF) levels were assayed in rats bearing the Wistar-Furth Wilms' transplantable tumor. Sites of tumor inoculation varied from subcutaneous, intramuscular, intrarenal (subcapsular), to intraperitoneal. The relative nephrotoxicities of netilmicin (Sch 20569) and gentamicin were compared in rats at doses of 30, 60, 90, and 120 mg/kg per day for 15 days. Both drugs caused proteinuria and a decrease in urine osmolality; however, netilmicin produced significantly less changes at all doses than gentamicin. N-nitrosomethylurea (NMU) given intravenously to rats at age 50 days induced mammary carcinomas in 89% of BUF/N, 73% of Sprague-Dawley, and 89% of F344 females. Determinations of rectal temperature, blood glucose, plasma free fatty acids, liver acetyl-CoA and carcass fat of thiamin-deficient rats indicated that during the ensuing anorexia they metabolized their fat reserves more rapidly than did pair-fed normal controls. Their lower metabolic rate indicates that the reserves mobilized are utilized inefficiently.

Pharmacological assay has shown the early release of histamine and 5HT into the exudate followed at later times by a release of prostaglandins, and a second release of histamine.
