Drug-induced ocular side-effects with isotretinoin.

Whereas there are numerous reported ocular side-effects from isotretinoin medication, we present the first case report of corneal steepening after systemic treatment with isotretinoin for seven and a half weeks. The case was associated with a significant drop in visual acuity which could not be explained from the refractive error change. All signs and symptoms were absent seven and a half weeks after the medication was withdrawn. The case indicates that eye care professionals need to be vigilant about the possibility of adverse ocular manifestations associated with the use of systemic medicati

Ophthalmic disturbances in children with sensorineural hearing loss.

Co-incidence of sensorineural hearing loss and ophthalmic abnormalities has a tremendous influence on development of children. This study was done to determine the nature and prevalence of ophthalmic disturbances in children with congenital sensorineural hearing loss. In a descriptive cross-sectional study, complete ophthalmologic examinations such as assessment of visual acuity, cycloplegic refraction, ocular motility examination, slit lamp examination and indirect funduscopy on 50 children with sensorineural hearing loss (determined by ABR), were performed. Thirty-two percent of cases had at…

[Dose the mice is ideal animal myopia model?].

Myopia animal model plays an important role in mechanism study on myopia. Recently, mice are increasingly used in myopia animal model. Using mouse as myopic animal model has several advantages, especially in the mechanism study. However, the mice eye is much smaller in size than other animal eyes, therefore it is very difficult to measure the refraction and ocular dimensions in vivo. Here are summaries and comments round disputed issues which are expected to be useful for animal myopia researches.

A study of aniseikonia and Knapp's law using a projection space eikonometer.

PURPOSE: Knapp's Law, which states that anisometropias due to varying abnormal axial lengths between eyes would not result in inequality in relative retinal image size, provided the correcting spectacle lens was placed at the far point of the eye, has been shown to fall short in clinical practice in several studies using "direct comparison eikonometry". To test these findings using space eikonometry and to further elucidate this Law's clinical applicability, the following study was conducted. METHODS: Thirteen patients with suspected axial anisometropia of at least 4 Diopters were identified,

Update on contraindications in laser corneal refractive surgery.

More than 25 years of experience with refractive surgery techniques (since the FDA [Food and Drug Administration] of the United States approved the use of the excimer laser in the remodeling of the cornea in 1995), added to the technological advances in ophthalmology (femtosecond laser, topography-guided ablation, anterior segment imaging systems) and increased understanding of refractive errors, higher order aberrations, and corneal biomechanics make corneal laser refractive surgery a safe method and effective for the correction of these defects. However, to date, there are still certain circ

Factors associated with undercorrected refractive errors in an older population: the Blue Mountains Eye Study.

AIMS: To identify characteristics of people with clinically relevant undercorrected refractive errors. METHODS: The Blue Mountains Eye Study was a population based survey of 3654 Australians aged 49-97 years. Examinations included a standardised refraction and measurement of presenting and best corrected visual acuity. Clinically relevant undercorrected refractive error was defined as improvement of >/=10 letters (2+ lines on the logMAR chart) in subjects with presenting acuity 6/9 or worse. Associations with a range of demographic and ocular variables were explored, adjusting for age and sex

Biomarkers of ocular surface disease using impression cytology.

Impression cytology (IC) is a technique which permits the retrieval of the outermost layer of ocular surface cells via the use of various types of filters. It is a minimally invasive method of evaluating human conjunctival epithelial cell morphology in the diagnosis of dry eye disease, a common and distressing disorder associated with ageing, contact lens wear, autoimmune disorders and refractive (LASIK) surgery. IC may also be utilized in the diagnosis of other ocular diseases, such as keratoconus and thyroid orbitopathy. More recently, IC has been utilized for the subsequent investigation of

The refractive state of the eye in Icelandic horses with the Silver mutation.

BACKGROUND: The syndrome Multiple Congenital Ocular Anomalies (MCOA) is a congenital eye disorder in horses. Both the MCOA syndrome and the Silver coat colour in horses are caused by the same missense mutation in the premelanosome protein (PMEL) gene. Horses homozygous for the Silver mutation (TT) are affected by multiple ocular defects causing visual impairment or blindness. Horses heterozygous for the Silver mutation (CT) have less severe clinical signs, usually cysts arising from the ciliary body iris or retina temporally. It is still unknown if the vision is impaired in horses heterozygous
