Where is the meningitis belt? Defining an area at risk of epidemic meningitis in Africa.

Mapping an area at risk of epidemics of meningococcal meningitis in Africa has significant implications for their prevention and case treatment, through the targeted development of improved surveillance systems and control policies. Such an area was described using information obtained from published and unpublished reports of meningitis epidemics between 1980 and 1999 and cases of meningococcal disease reported by surveillance systems to WHO. The Sahel bore the greatest epidemic burden, with over two-thirds of documented outbreaks and high attack rates. In addition to those already in the Men

Helminth parasites of dogs from two resource-limited communities in South Africa.

Biological samples were collected from dogs in resource-limited communities in the North-West and Gauteng Provinces of South Africa to assess the prevalence of helminth parasitism. These samples included adhesive tape peri-anal skin swabs and fresh faecal samples for helminth examination, and thick and thin blood films (smears) and whole-blood samples in anticoagulant for examination of filarial nematode microfilariae and haemoprotozoa. The eggs of Ancylostoma caninum, Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina, Dipylidium caninum and taeniids were identified. None of the blood samples and smears test

Do the factors associated with successful contact tracing of patients with gonorrhoea and Chlamydia differ?

OBJECTIVE: To assess and compare factors which may be associated with successful contact tracing in patients with gonorrhoea and chlamydia. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective observational study of patients attending a genitourinary medicine clinic with a diagnosis of gonorrhoea or chlamydia. Multivariate analysis model including demographic, socioeconomic, and behavioural variables. RESULTS: The attendance of at least one sexual contact was associated with naming more contacts for patients with gonorrhoea (OR 1.44, 95% CI 1.04-2.01). A history of gonorrhoea was associated with successful contact tra

The pattern for common anaemia among Saudi children.

Anaemia is of frequent occurrence in children in different parts of the world and poses a significant health problem. A few isolated reports indicate that anaemia occurs at a high prevalence rate in Saudi Arabia though the actual prevalence in several regions is not known. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of different types of anaemias in Saudi children in different areas of the country. Blood samples were collected from 5381 children less than 14 years of age, and haematological analysis and red cell indices were determined. The results of haematological parameters

Functional capacity and living arrangements of unmarried elderly persons.

This analysis employed the 1986 Longitudinal Study of Aging (LSOA) to examine the impact of functional capacity, gender, race and ethnicity, and various socioeconomic characteristics on changes in living arrangements among unmarried elderly persons over a two-year period. The results reveal that a decline in functional capacity greatly increases the likelihood that an elderly person will move in with others or become institutionalized. Nonetheless, even when they experience significant declines in health, most single elderly persons who were living alone at the initial interview continued to l

Family extension and the elderly: economic, demographic, and family cycle factors.

This paper reports on the results of applying a multivariate regression model of living arrangements choices to census data on the 1970 U. S. population of nonmarried, nonparenting adults. The model examines the factors affecting living with (1) relatives or (2) living alone or with nonrelatives. These factors include sex, income, marital history, and age. In addition, the model tests whether living arrangements choices differ for the elderly relative to other ages. The analysis shows that higher income, the experience of divorce, and being male are all associated with a higher probability of

Transitions in living arrangements and life satisfaction in later life: the role of race and ethnicity.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study examined whether transitions in living arrangements, that is, changes in cohabitation status or household composition are associated with life satisfaction in later life and whether these relationships differ by race/ethnicity. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Data from the 2014 to 2020 waves of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS; N = 8,389) were analyzed. The 2014 baseline was chosen to ensure harmonization of the study variables across waves, specifically accounting for changes in psychosocial indicators. Linear regression models assessed associations bet

Cardiorespiratory fitness mediates the association between neighborhood deprivation and arterial stiffness in women.

Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death among women in the United States, and arterial stiffness is a strong predictor of cardiovascular events and mortality. Growing evidence suggests that neighborhood socioeconomic context contributes to cardiovascular risk, yet the physiological pathways linking neighborhood disadvantage to vascular health remain unclear. This study examined whether cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) mediates the association between neighborhood deprivation (ND) and arterial stiffness in postmenopausal women. Ninety-one Black and White postmenopausal women [4

Exploring the cognitive aspects of walking in the neighborhoods among people living with dementia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The population living with dementia has been growing globally. Supportive neighborhood environments are essential for maintaining their autonomy, independence, and social participation. This article explores the cognitive aspects (e.g., attention, task execution, recognition, spatial navigation) of the walking experiences of people living with dementia in neighborhoods, identifying attributes that support and hinder their ability to walk outside the home. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This qualitative study presents findings based on 26 participants living with mild

Association of Neighborhood Social Vulnerability With Metastatic Cancer at Diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Relationships between socioeconomic factors and metastatic cancer at diagnosis have not been well studied. Using CDC's Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) we studied the association of metastatic cancer at initial diagnosis with 16 social factors and their interaction with insurance status. METHODS: California and Texas cancer registries, merged with the SVI database, were used to identify adult patients diagnosed with breast, colorectal, liver, lung, ovarian, pancreatic, or prostate cancer from 2015 to 2019. To determine the association of SVI with metastatic cancer at initial diagn

Facilitators and barriers to neighborhood social integration.

Social isolation has reached concerning rates, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Social integration is critical to combatting social isolation and loneliness by promoting a sense of community and belonging. Yet, most existing research centers on fostering close personal relationships within family and friend networks. Social integration within the neighborhood context (e.g., chatting with neighbors, participating in local organizations) is another tool that can be used to combat loneliness, but less is known about the process of social integration for residents situated in dif

Neighbourhood Poverty Histories and Severe Maternal Morbidity Across California Census Tracts.

BACKGROUND: Severe maternal morbidity (SMM) and its racial and ethnic inequities are the result of a mixture of risk factors ranging from clinical comorbidities to socio-economic contexts. One under-explored dimension is neighbourhood contexts. OBJECTIVES: In order to understand the impact of neighbourhood contexts on SMM, this study investigates the relationship between a 20-year history of neighbourhood poverty and SMM among 8.6 million births in California from 2000 to 2018 and assesses effect measure modification by race/ethnicity and nativity. METHODS: Data include hospital live births

Neighborhood Factors as Correlates of Alcohol Use in the N2 Cohort Study of Black Sexually Minoritized Men and Transgender Women.

Sexually minoritized men (SMM), transgender women (TW), and particularly Black SMM and Black TW may be disproportionately impacted by alcohol-related problems. Few studies have empirically examined neighborhood factors that may contribute to alcohol use, specifically among these populations. Using data from the N2 longitudinal cohort study in Chicago, IL, survey data from the second wave of longitudinal assessment (n = 126) and GPS mobility data from enrollment were used to evaluate neighborhood alcohol outlet availability, neighborhood disorder, and neighborhood poverty as correlates of indiv

Later-Life Living Arrangements of Americans With and Without Children: A Life Table Approach.

OBJECTIVES: This study describes living arrangement-specific life expectancy for older Americans with and without children, by sex and race/ethnicity. METHOD: We use life tables from the Human Mortality Database and data from the Health and Retirement Study over a 17-year period (2000-2016) to calculate living arrangement-specific life expectancy at age 65 using Sullivan's method. Results describe the lives of older Americans aged 65 and older with and without children in terms of the number of expected years of life in different living arrangements. RESULTS: With the exception of Hispanic m

Neighborhood air pollution and household environmental health as it relates to respiratory health and healthcare utilization among elderly persons with asthma.

Objective: The study investigated the associations between fine particulate matter (PM2.5; <2.5 μm in diameter), indoor environment, pulmonary function, and healthcare utilization in a vulnerable group of elderly persons with asthma. We hypothesized that environmental conditions were associated with adverse pulmonary health outcomes. Methods: The study involved elderly (n = 76; mean age 64.6 years; 48 women) vulnerable persons in Detroit, Michigan, USA, with physician-diagnosed asthma. Exposure variables included measured outdoor PM2.5, self-rated outdoor and household environmental pollutants

Community sensitization and decision-making for trial participation: A mixed-methods study from The Gambia.

BACKGROUND: Ensuring individual free and informed decision-making for research participation is challenging. It is thought that preliminarily informing communities through 'community sensitization' procedures may improve individual decision-making. This study set out to assess the relevance of community sensitization for individual decision-making in research participation in rural Gambia. METHODS: This anthropological mixed-methods study triangulated qualitative methods and quantitative survey methods in the context of an observational study and a clinical trial on malaria carried out by the
