Retinal microvasculature and macular-choroidal thickness in oral contraceptive users: an OCTA and OCT comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Potential retinal vascular changes associated with hormonal contraceptive use remain insufficiently characterized in the literature. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) enables a noninvasive and highly detailed evaluation of retinal microvasculature. This study aimed to assess the superficial and deep retinal capillary plexuses, and macular and choroidal thickness in women using combined oral contraceptives (COC) or progestogen-only contraceptives (POC) compared with women who had never used hormonal contraceptives. The potential influence of the duration of use was als

MYDGF promotes pathological and physiological retinal angiogenesis via the Gαi1/3-Gab1-Akt-mTOR signaling.

Retinal neovascularization (RNV) is a potential vision-threatening process characterized by the abnormal growth of retinal vessels. Despite its clinical prevalence, the precise mechanisms governing RNV initiation and progression remain incompletely defined. Here we identify myeloid-derived growth factor (MYDGF) as a critical regulator of retinal vascular dynamics. Using single-cell RNA sequencing and human patient validation, we show that MYDGF is upregulated in retinal endothelial cells during proliferative diabetic retinopathy and mouse models of pathological neovascularization. In vitro, MY…

Parkinson's Disease: What Can Retinal Imaging Tell Us?

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor symptoms such as tremors, rigidity, and bradykinesia. While the diagnosis of PD primarily relies on clinical assessments and neurological examination, there has been growing interest in exploring non-invasive imaging techniques to aid in early detection and monitoring of the disease. In recent years, retinal imaging has emerged as a promising tool for studying PD due to the close anatomical and functional similarities between the retina and the brain. Retinal imaging methods, such as spectral domain optical coheren

Retinal vascular remodeling in photoreceptor degenerative disease.

Abnormal vasculature in the retina, specifically tortuous vessels and capillary degeneration, is common in many of the most prevalent retinal degenerative diseases, currently affecting millions of people across the world. However, the formation and development of abnormal vasculature in the context of retinal degenerative diseases are still poorly understood. The FVB/N (rd1) and rd10 mice are well-studied animal models of retinal degenerative diseases, but how photoreceptor degeneration leads to vascular abnormality in the diseases remains to be elucidated. Here, we used advancements in confoc

Image-Guided Optical Coherence Tomography to Assess Structural Changes in Rodent Retinas.

Ocular diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, and uveitis, are always accompanied by retinal structural changes. These diseases affecting the fundus always exhibit typical abnormalities in certain cell types in the retina, including photoreceptor cells, retinal ganglion cells, cells in the retinal blood vessels, and cells in the choroidal vascular cells. Noninvasive, highly efficient, and adaptable imaging techniques are required for both clinical practice and basic research. Image-guided optical coherence tomography (OCT) satisfies these requiremen

Clinical Features of Acute Retinal Necrosis with Optic Neuropathy and Central Retinal Artery Occlusion as Initial Manifestations.

Acute retinal necrosis normally occurs at the periphery retina and gradually merges and progresses to the posterior pole. Optic neuropathy and central retinal artery occlusion as initial manifestation is very rare. We report the case of a patient with optic neuropathy and central retinal vessels as the first manifestations of acute retinal necrosis. Antiviral drugs, corticosteroids, and drugs that improve blood circulation were given. The necrotic retina and swollen optic disc disappeared gradually. However, the final vision of this eye declined to no light perception. From the first case repo…

Semaphorin-3C signals through Neuropilin-1 and PlexinD1 receptors to inhibit pathological angiogenesis.

Retinopathy of prematurity causes visual impairment due to destructive neoangiogenesis after degeneration of the retinal microvasculature. This study was aimed at analyzing whether local delivery of Semaphorin-3C (Sema3C) suppresses pathological retinal angiogenesis. Sema3C exerted potent inhibiting effects in cellular models of angiogenesis. In an endothelial cell xenotransplantation assay, Sema3C acted primarily on immature microvessels by inducing endothelial cell apoptosis. Intravitreal administration of recombinant Sema3C disrupted endothelial tip cell formation and cell-cell contacts, wh

The predictive value of posterior pole vessels in retinopathy of prematurity.

Dilation and tortuosity of the posterior pole vessels "(plus disease)" is a sign of poor prognosis and may be associated with threshold or prethreshold retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). We have found that normal posterior pole vessels are a reliable marker for the absence of stage 3 ROP. One hundred thirty-two consecutive premature infants weighing less than 1600 g at birth underwent ROP examinations between 32 and 40 weeks' postconceptional age. The status of the posterior pole vessels was compared to peripheral retinal pathology. Vascular findings in the posterior pole were graded 0, 1, 2, o
