Inflammatory pseudotumor is a rare, benign lesion of various organs and tissues that occurs in children and young adults. A case is reported in a 12-year-old boy in a retroperitoneal location with involvement of the left ureter and a thrombosis of left iliac vein. He underwent surgical resection. A local recurrence 6 months later was surgically cured.

We sought to assess the outcome of large retroperitoneal vascular injury that occurred during operative laparoscopy but was not related to trocar or Veress needle injury. We conducted a retrospective review of cases operated and reviewed by our centres. Eight cases were identified. Four women were undergoing lymphadenectomy, where vascular injury is a recognized risk. Laparoscopic lumbar sympathectomy was performed on a young man with thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease). The surgeons disposition, trocars placement and dissection technique are described in detail. The retroperitoneal approach was done in a manner similar to laparoscopic properitoneal hernia repair. The operation can be carried out with common laparoscopic equipment (for cholecystectomy) and offers the benefits of minimally invasive surgery.

Pelvic examination of a 19-year-old woman with recurrent pain after multiple laparotomies revealed a 4.0 cm paracervical fibroepithelial polyp and tender fullness in the left pelvis. Abdominal exploration had normal findings, but exploration of the retroperitoneum revealed an encysted bottle cap that had eroded through the vaginal wall years before.

We report a patient with chronic active hepatitis in whom one of the initial findings was retroperitoneal lymphadenopathy, detected by abdominal ultrasound examination. Extrahepatic presenting findings of chronic active hepatitis may include arthritis, urticaria, pleurisy and pericarditis, while abdominal lymphadenopathy has been only rarely described. Chronic active hepatitis should be included in the differential diagnosis of abdominal lymphadenopathy.

Intraligamentary pregnancy, although rare, tests the physician's acumen in diagnostic and therapeutic skills. Two cases illustrating this entity are presented, the first involves an 18-week fetus, the second a partial hydatidiform mole. Although their presentation and pathogenesis may be indistinguishable, their clinical course and management is different. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of an intraligamentary pregnancy involving a partial hydatidiform mole.

A case of peliosis hepatis in a 52-year-old woman with unusual involvement of the spleen and lymph nodes is described. The initial sign was intraperitoneal hemorrhage from the splenic lesion, recessitating splenectomy. The hepatic lesion, which was first noticed during the operation, rapidly progressed and eventually resulted in hepatic rupture with fatal intraperitoneal hemorrhage. Colorectal perforation during barium enema examination is rare. The authors report the case of an 84-year-old woman in whom retroperitoneal perforation of the rectum occurred during barium enema examination. Potential mechanisms of injury include trauma, overinflation of the balloon, recent instrumentation and associated disease of the rectal mucosa. When the colon has been well prepared before examination, and air alone, not barium, has been insufflated into the retroperitoneum, then such injuries may be managed successfully without operation, as in this case.

Fifty retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (RPLND) performed by the same surgeon on 45 clinical stage I and in 5 clinical stage II cases of non seminomatous testis tumors were reviewed. Of the 45 clinical stage I patients, 12 revealed retroperitoneal lymph node involvement. Of the 17 stage II cases, one survived for more than 4 years and 3 for more than 6 years with no other treatment. There was no evidence of recurrence. As part of our series of fundamental studies on the application of piperacillin (PIPC) in the gynecologic field, we studied the transfer of PIPC to the uterine tissues. During our pharmacokinetic study of PIPC, a two-compartment model was used for blood levels: C1 = Ae-beta t + Be-alpha t.
