Laser coagulation of concha nasalis inferior is essentially atraumatic, bloodless, sterile and causes no edema. The specific effect of a laser beam on microcirculation suggests that laser surgery can be viewed as a pathogenetic method of therapy of vasomotor rhinitis. Different variants of vegetative nervous system dysfunction were identified during the examination of 86 children with vasomotor rhinitis. Based on the findings of the examination a pathogenetically-based method of acupuncture was proposed for the management of this patients' group. Acupuncture with regard to vegetative dysfunction attenuated the latter's manifestations and corrected associated psychoemotional disorders. As a result the clinical manifestations of vasomotor rhinitis were eliminated.

The effect of HR-6 solutions containing adenosine triphosphate (either 0.5 or 5 mg/ml) and placebo on the symptoms of chronic rhinitis was studied in 11 patients in randomized, crossover study. The influence of experimental rhinitis on the absorption of buserelin, measured as the serum luteinizing hormone (LH) response, has been investigated. A single dose of 200 micrograms buserelin was given to 24 healthy male volunteers after induction of experimental rhinitis with histamine and after use of a saline spray (placebo control). To test whether prostaglandins contribute to the nasal allergic reaction, we subjected allergic rhinitis patients to nasal allergen challenge after treatment with flurbiprofen, a cyclooxygenase inhibitor. We challenged 18 patients after two pretreatment doses of flurbiprofen, 75 mg, chlorpheniramine, 6 mg, both drugs combined, and placebo. All patients received all treatments. The influence of obstructed nasal passages was investigated in l4 patients with allergic rhinitis. Disordered breathing in sleep was found in all patients in the form of periodic breathing, and hypopneic and hyperpneic episodes, associated with characteristic "microarousals' from sleep. Patients had an average of 50 "microarousals' from sleep, ten times more than normal controls. It is suggested that increased upper airway resistance and increased nasal discharge are responsible for the disordered breathing in sleep and for the "microarousals'.

We examined the differences between allergic and nonallergic rhinitis. One hundred forty-two patients were evaluated. Forty-eight patients were diagnosed as having allergic rhinitis (AR) on the basis of histories correlating with skin tests and markedly elevated total serum IgE levels. A new, simple and effective local treatment of allergic and vasomotor rhinitis is presented. Using 15 per cent silver nitrate, bilateral chemical cautery of the anterior part of the nasal septum and inferior turbinates has been carried out at weekly intervals on 1 to 5 occasions, in 41 cases. Patients with vasomotor rhinitis (28) and pollenosis (23) were subjected to psychosomatic examination and treated either by acupuncture or phonostimulation exclusively.
