Lanthanide-Dependent Methanol Dehydrogenase XoxF Confers a Competitive Advantage to Sinorhizobium meliloti During Symbiosis with Medicago sativa.

The recent discovery of the lanthanide (Ln)-dependent methanol dehydrogenase (Ln-MDH) XoxF has expanded the spectrum of bacteria recognized for methylotrophic metabolism. Many bacteria, including rhizobia, have historically escaped being categorized as methylotrophs because they exclusively produce XoxF-type Ln-MDHs and entirely lack the long-studied calcium-dependent MDH MxaFI. We report that the XoxF-type Ln-MDH encoded by the smb20173 gene is the sole MDH that supports methylotrophic growth of Sinorhizobium meliloti. The lanthanides that consistently supported growth of S. meliloti in minim

Combined effects of super absorbent polymers and microbial fertilizers Co-application on apple production in the Loess Plateau.

Super absorbent polymers (SAP) and microbial fertilizers (MF) are pivotal in ameliorating soil physicochemical properties, regulating plant growth, and enhancing fruit quality. However, the combined effects of their co-application on apple plants remain unclear. To address this, a two-year field experiment was conducted on the Loess Plateau to evaluate different co-application ratios of SAP and MF. Results showed that the combined application improved soil properties, with higher contents of available nitrogen and organic matter, better moisture retention and lower soluble salt content. These

The Early Response to Urea, Nitrate, or Ammonium and Iron Resupply in Tomato Roots Highlights the Induction of FER, bHLHs, UMAMITs, and MATEs.

Depending on the nitrogen (N) form available to roots, plants activate different transcriptional and metabolic pathways; this can consequently translate into differences in the composition and release of root exudates. To address the existing knowledge gap regarding the relationship between the availability of Iron (Fe) and different N forms applied (nitrate, ammonium, or urea), the molecular mechanisms activated by plants to promote their acquisition have been investigated using omics data integration ("exudomic" × transcriptomic analyses). The transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses reveal a

K2FeO4-modified vinasse biochar reduces chromium accumulation in rice grains and enhances Cr(VI) reduction in paddy soil.

K2FeO4-modified biochar (KFB) has shown potential for chromium (Cr) immobilization, but its effects on Cr transformation and translocation within the soil-rice continuum remain poorly understood. We synthesized KFB from vinasse-derived biochar and conducted a pot experiment with Cr-spiked soil (300 mg·kg-1) under four treatments: control (CK), 1% unmodified biochar (VB), 1% FeCl3-modified biochar (FB), and 1% KFB. After 120 days of rice growth, iron plaque (IP) and Cr fractions were determined to elucidate the impact of KFB on Cr dynamics in this system. Compared to CK, VB, and FB, KFB signifi

Foliar GR24 and γ-aminobutyric acid modulate redox signaling, root-system architecture, and mineral homeostasis in tellurite-stressed wheat (Triticum aestivum L.).

Tellurite (TeO₃2-) is a phytotoxic tellurium (Te) species that disrupts cellular redox homeostasis, mineral nutrition, and root development. However, the signaling events underlying tellurite toxicity and its mitigation in cereals remain poorly understood. This study examined whether foliar application of GR24, a synthetic strigolactone analog, and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), individually or jointly, modulates early root signaling and downstream physiological acclimation in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) exposed to tellurite. A 2 × 4 factorial experiment was conducted using two tellurite conditi

Exploring the role of ergothioneine and mycorrhizal fungi in shaping the wheat soil microbiome.

BACKGROUND: The association between plants and soil microbes is critical for both soil and plant health. Introducing beneficial microbial inoculants, such as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), can enhance the uptake of nutrients and compounds in plants including ergothioneine (ERGO), a well-known antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound that humans must obtain through diet. However, little is known about how ERGO and inoculated AMF influence ERGO uptake in plants or affect soil microbiome composition, including bacteria, archaea, and fungi. This study investigates the interaction between so

Iron accumulation in leaf trichomes and stomata of tomato as an iron reservoir provided by iron-citric acid chelate under limey soil conditions.

Iron (Fe) is an important mineral needed for plant growth and development. Calcareous (limey) soils cause decline in Fe availability leading to chlorosis in leaves. The correction of Fe chlorosis can be succeeded by the application organic acids. In the present study, we chelated Fe-citrate complex solution, compared with Fe-EDDHA fertilizer, and evaluated the effects of the Fe-citrate chelates on tomato under limey soil condition. The study was conducted in a controlled greenhouse. "Joker F1" cultivar tomato seedlings were used as the material. The seedlings were planted in the 4-L pots fille

Biocontrol Activity of Volatile Organic Compounds Emitted from Bacillus paralicheniformis 2-12 Against Fusarium oxysporum Associated with Astragalus membranaceus Root Rot.

Root rot, mainly caused by Fusarium oxysporum, is one of the most destructive diseases and leads to significant economic loss of Astragalus membranaceus. To develop an effective strategy for the management of this serious disease, a bacterial strain 2-12 was screened from A. membranaceus rhizosphere soil and identified as Bacillus paralicheniformis based on the phylogenetic analyses of gyrase subunit B gene (gyrB) and RNA polymerase gene (rpoB) sequences. Interestingly, the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by B. paralicheniformis 2-12 exhibited potent antifungal activities against F.

Magnetite nanoparticle coating chemistry regulates root uptake pathways and iron chlorosis in plants.

Understanding the fundamental interaction of nanoparticles at plant interfaces is critical for reaching field-scale applications of nanotechnology-enabled plant agriculture, as the processes between nanoparticles and root interfaces such as root compartments and root exudates remain largely unclear. Here, using iron deficiency-induced plant chlorosis as an indicator phenotype, we evaluated the iron transport capacity of Fe3O4 nanoparticles coated with citrate (CA) or polyacrylic acid (PAA) in the plant rhizosphere. Both nanoparticles can be used as a regulator of plant hormones to promote root

Early-stage iron deficiency alters physiological processes and iron transporter expression, along with photosynthetic and oxidative damage to sorghum.

Iron (Fe) starvation in Strategy II plants is a major nutritional problem causing severe visual symptoms and yield reductions. This prompted us to investigate the physiological and molecular consequences of Fe deficiency responses at an early stage in sorghum plants. The Fe-starved sorghum did not show shoot biomass reduction, but the root length, biomass, and chlorophyll synthesis were severely affected. The chlorophyll a fluorescence analysis showed that the quantum yield efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) and photosynthesis performance index (Pi_ABS) in young leaves significantly reduced in respons

Resveratrol improves the iron deficiency adaptation of Malus baccata seedlings by regulating iron absorption.

BACKGROUND: Resveratrol (Res), a phytoalexin, has been widely reported to participate in plant resistance to fungal infections. However, little information is available on its role in abiotic stress, especially in iron deficiency stress. Malus baccata is widely used as apple rootstock in China, but it is sensitive to iron deficiency. RESULTS: In this study, we investigated the role of exogenous Res in M. baccata seedings under iron deficiency stress. Results showed that applying 100 μM exogenous Res could alleviate iron deficiency stress. The seedlings treated with Res had a lower etiolation

Application of signaling molecules in reducing metal accumulation in alfalfa and alleviating metal-induced phytotoxicity in Pb/Cd-contaminated soil.

The utilization of forages grown on metal-contaminated soil can increase the risk of heavy metals entering the food chain and affecting human health because of elevated toxic metal concentrations. Meanwhile, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and nitric oxide (NO) as signaling molecules are known to promote plant growth in metal-contaminated soils. However, the regulatory mechanisms of such molecules in plant physiology and soil biochemistry have not been well-documented. Hence, we investigate the role of the exogenous application of H2S and NO on alfalfa growth in lead/cadmium (Pb/Cd)-contaminated soil.

Root Metabolic Shifts Drive Genome-Resolved Cometabolism of Phthalates and Coupled Humification in Mollisols.

Extensive import of mixed phthalate esters (PAEs) threatens Mollisol ecosystems. Nevertheless, mechanisms through which plant roots orchestrate the cometabolic degradation of PAEs and couple this with soil humification remain unclear. This study integrated plant physiology, untargeted metabolomics, and genome-resolved metagenomics to decipher response trajectories of the Pak Choi-Mollisol root-microbe system across a mixed PAEs gradient. The findings indicated that under mild stress (5 mg/kg), plants sustained a "growth-driven" homeostasis alongside a stable rhizospheric microbiome. In contras

Foliar application of inorganic fertilizers mitigates mercury and methylmercury accumulation in dryland Crops: A plant-soil-microorganism synergistic regulation.

Foliar application technology has received considerable research attention due to its potential to mitigate the accumulation of heavy metals such as cadmium and lead in crops. However, to date, there are very few inorganic foliar sprays reported to be capable of reducing mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in plants. In this study, common inorganic foliar sprays such as ZnSO4, Na2S, Na2SeO3, and MnCl2 were screened, among which ZnSO4 was confirmed to be the most effective in reducing Hg (32 %-72 %) and MeHg content (43 %-75 %) in various dryland plants (Lettuce, Chili, Maize and Bok choy).
