The de facto US mental and addictive disorders service system. Epidemiologic catchment area prospective 1-year prevalence rates of disorders and services.

After initial interviews with 20,291 adults in the National Institute of Mental Health Epidemiologic Catchment Area Program, we estimated prospective 1-year prevalence and service use rates of mental and addictive disorders in the US population. An annual prevalence rate of 28.1% was found for these disorders, composed of a 1-month point prevalence of 15.7% (at wave 1) and a 1-year incidence of new or recurrent disorders identified in 12.3% of the population at wave 2. During the 1-year follow-up period, 6.6% of the total sample developed one or more new disorders after being assessed as havin

The Costs of Silencing the Self and Divided Self in the Context of Physical Abuse, Racial/Ethnic Identity, and Medication Adherence in Women Living with HIV.

Racial/ethnic minority status and physical abuse history are risk factors for higher mortality rates and lower adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) in women living with HIV (WLWH) in the United States. The current study tested the hypotheses that minority status and physical abuse history might lead women to silence the self (minimize and hide thoughts and feelings in order to avoid relational conflict, loss, and/or abuse) as measured by the Silencing the Self Scale (STSS), and that STSS might mediate and moderate relationships of physical abuse and racial/ethnic minority status with ART

HELP@APP: development and evaluation of a self-help app for traumatized Syrian refugees in Germany - a study protocol of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Syrians represent the largest group among refugees in Germany. Many of them were exposed to sequential traumatizing events including war, escape and post-migration stressors, which significantly increase the risk to develop symptoms of posttraumatic stress and other mental disorders. However, there is a lack of adequate treatment options for traumatized refugees in Germany. Moreover, their access to psychosocial care is often restricted due to legal regulation, language barriers, and unclear cost coverage. We therefore aim to develop a low-threshold supportive self-help app for Syr

Acceptability of HIV oral self-test among truck drivers and youths: a qualitative investigation from Pune, Maharashtra.

BACKGROUND: Ending AIDS by 2030 is a global target, to which India is a signatory. HIV-self-test (HIVST) coupled with counselling and AIDS-care, including antiretroviral therapy, has the potential to achieve this. However, national programs are at varying stages of acceptance of HIVST, as discussions around its introduction spark controversy and debates. HIV-self-test, as yet, is not part of the AIDS control program in India. Against this backdrop, we explored acceptability of an HIV oral self-test (HIVOST) among truckers and young men and women. METHODS: A qualitative investigation with 41 i

White-coat effect induced by therapist's presence during speech therapy: study of post-stroke aphasic Japanese patients.

OBJECTIVE: To delineate the clinical characteristics of post-stroke aphasic patients exhibiting the white-coat effect when a therapist is present during therapy session, 18 Japanese inpatients were studied. DESIGN: On the basis of blood pressure assessments during two speech therapy sessions, one directed by a speech therapist and the other self-directed, patients were divided into two groups: one including the seven who exhibited the white-coat effect and the other including the 11 patients who did not. The white-coat effect was diagnosed when a pressor response was greater during a therapis

Negotiating Stigma: Comparing the Experiences of Self-Identified and Clinically Diagnosed Men with OCD in Russia.

This cross-sectional qualitative study investigates how Russian men with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) experience and manage mental health stigma, focusing on differences between those with a clinical diagnosis and those who self-identify with the disorder. Through in-depth interviews with eleven participants, the research explores meaning-making, disclosure practices, coping strategies, and the impact of masculine norms on help-seeking. Findings reveal that self-identified men often leverage the OCD label for personal understanding and peer support, while clinically diagnosed men gain v

Depression Literacy Among American Indian Older Adults.

Older American Indians experience high rates of depression and other psychological disorders, yet little research exist on the depression literacy of this group. Depression literacy is fundamental for individuals seeking help for depression in a timely and appropriate manner. In the present study the authors examine levels and predictors of knowledge of depression symptoms in a sample of rural older American Indians (N = 227) living in the Midwestern United States. Data from self-administered questionnaires indicate limited knowledge of depression and negative attitudes toward seeking help for

Hypervigilance, suspiciousness, and the paranoia spectrum: A latent factor structure and measurement invariance investigation.

Hypervigilance and suspiciousness are conceptually overlapping constructs included in measures of paranoia spectrum symptoms. However, no studies have examined the structural relationship between these constructs. Additionally, few studies have investigated whether ethnoracial differences in hypervigilance and suspiciousness are confounded by measurement properties. We hypothesized that the structure of hypervigilance and suspiciousness would be best conceptualized by a hierarchical model. We also tested measurement differences across ethnoracial groups. Community individuals (nFull = 8081, nA

Effectiveness of self-monitoring devices measuring the urinary sodium-to-potassium ratio, urinary salt (sodium) excretion, or salt concentration in foods for blood pressure management: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Self-monitoring devices that measure the urinary sodium-to-potassium (Na/K) ratio, urinary salt or sodium excretion, or salt concentration in foods have emerged as tools that can guide dietary adjustments for blood pressure (BP) control. This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated whether these self-monitoring devices can help to control BP in adults. The PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Ichushi-Web databases were searched to identify randomized controlled trials that compared the effect of these devices (with or without additional dietary education) plus usual care on BP with that of u
