Effectiveness of a self-management program for anticoagulated patients to improve their knowledge about treatment and time in therapeutic range.

Oral anticoagulation self-control programs have demonstrated efficiency and cost-effectiveness over recent years. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a training intervention focused on patients with antivitamin K anticoagulants included in a self-care program. For this, we made a quasi-experimental study, pretest and post-test, using a validated questionnaire with 2 measures, before and after an educational intervention about oral anticoagulation focused on patients that will initiate the self-control program in consultation. To check the patient's adherence and coagulation level

Roots, Leaves, and Flowers: A Narrative Review of Herbs and Botanicals Used for Self-Managed Abortion in Asia and the Pacific.

Abortion has existed throughout history, often outside of formal health care systems. This type of care, now called self-managed abortion, has historically been achieved in part through botanicals and traditional medicines. Their use continues into the modern day, especially in Asia, Hawai'i, and other Pacific Islands, where indigenous medicine traditions practice alongside allopathic medicine. Many of these botanicals, such as papaya leaves, hibiscus flowers, and young kī, and traditional medicines, such as tianhuafen, yuanhua, and Shenghua Decoction, have undergone scientific and clinical in

Definition and refinement of HYlaDO, a self-hypnosis training program for chronic pain management: A qualitative exploratory study.

One in four Canadians is affected by chronic pain, frequently treated with opioids, which present a risk of addiction and overdose. The development of non-pharmacological interventions is therefore crucial. In a pilot project, a self-hypnosis training program showed encouraging results in improving breast cancer patients' quality of life. Based on this program, we developed a new self-hypnosis program for chronic pain patients: HYlaDO (Hypnosis of pain in French, HYpnose de la DOuleur). To structure the process of adapting an existing program to a new context, we used the ORBIT model (Obesity-

Mediation of Self-Management and Treatment Adherence Health-Related Quality of Life for Adolescents With Congenital Heart Disease.

BACKGROUND: Improved autonomy, relatedness, competence, self-management, and treatment adherence have been linked to better health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in adolescents with chronic illnesses. Nonetheless, potential mediating relationships among these concepts have not been investigated. Mediation research is necessary to fully examine ways to improve health and other outcomes for adolescents living with chronic illnesses. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among the three innate needs (autonomy, relatedness, and competence) of the self-determinatio…

Adapting standard care to support self-management for a patient with lymphoedema and neurological co-morbidities: a case report.

This case report discusses the role of a practitioner managing a patient with secondary lymphoedema as part of a self-management regime. The patient was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and lumbar spinal stenosis. The focus is on compression therapy, which is used as part of complete decongestive therapy to reduce and control lymphoedema. The case report illustrates how a patient-centred plan can help people with lymphoedema and co-morbidities to achieve their personal goals. The evidence behind treatment decisions is considered, and modifications made to the care plan to accommodate the need…

The Impact of Multiplex PCR in Diagnosing and Managing Bacterial Infections in COVID-19 Patients Self-Medicated with Antibiotics.

The multiplex PCR is a powerful and efficient tool that was widely used during the COVID-19 pandemic to diagnose SARS-CoV-2 infections and that has applications for bacterial identification, as well as determining bacterial resistance to antibiotics. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the usability of multiplex PCR, especially in patients self-medicated with antibiotics, where bacterial cultures often give false-negative results. A cross-sectional study was developed in two COVID-19 units, where 489 eligible patients were included as antibiotic takers and non-antibiotic takers. Antibioti

"I'll just deal with this on my own": a qualitative exploration of experiences with self-managed abortion in the United States.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of evidence indicates that some people seek options to terminate a pregnancy without medical assistance, but experiences doing so have largely been documented only among people accessing a clinic-based abortion. We aim to describe self-managed abortion (SMA) experiences of people recruited outside of clinics, including their motivations for SMA, pregnancy confirmation and decision-making processes, method choices, and clinical outcomes. METHODS: In 2017, we conducted 14 in-depth interviews with self-identified females of reproductive age who recently reported in an

Usability and Acceptability of an App (SELFBACK) to Support Self-Management of Low Back Pain: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Self-management is the key recommendation for managing nonspecific low back pain (LBP). However, there are well-documented barriers to self-management; therefore, methods of facilitating adherence are required. Smartphone apps are increasingly being used to support self-management of long-term conditions such as LBP. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the usability and acceptability of the SELFBACK smartphone app, designed to support and facilitate self-management of non-specific LBP. The app provides weekly self-management plans, comprising physical activity, strength…

Is the Patient Activation Measure a valid measure of osteoarthritis self-management attitudes and capabilities? Results of a Rasch analysis.

BACKGROUND: The Patient Activation Measure (PAM-13) was developed using Rasch analysis to assess knowledge, skills and confidence in the management of one's health. Previous studies report positive relationships between PAM-13 scores, self-management behaviours and longitudinal health outcomes in adults with chronic disease. There is little extant measurement property evidence for the use of PAM-13 in specific osteoarthritis (OA) populations. This study tested measurement properties of the PAM-13 in people living with hip and knee OA. METHODS: Item response frequency analysis was conducted. R…
