The proportion of positive Leptospira microscopic agglutination tests for 23,005 dogs significantly increased from 2002 to 2004 (p < 0.002) regardless of the positive cutoff titer used and was highest (p < 0.05) for serovars Autumnalis and Grippotyphosa. The strongest positive serologic correlation (r = 0.72) was between serovars Autumnalis and Pomona.

INTRODUCTION: A link between sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and autoimmune disease is postulated. The association of SNHL in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus is reported.
METHODS: An adolescent female with left lateral medullary syndrome and right internuclear ophthalmoplegia was diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus. A patient with neurosyphilis, presenting with severe ocular impairment due to optic neuropathy, is described. In such a case, a low index of clinical suspicion and improper use of syphilitic serologic tests may delay diagnosis. However, specific tests of serum and cerebrospinal fluid are mandatory for the diagnosis. Treatment evaluation necessitates the follow-up of serology and cerebrospinal fluid cell count. Recent changes of therapy recommendations in subjects with neurosyphilis and in those syphilitic patients co-infected with HIV are mentioned.

Progressive pulmonary coccidioidomycosis has not been previously reported in the setting of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). A patient with AIDS, progressive pulmonary coccidioidomycosis, Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, and disseminated cytomegalovirus is described. Originally described in 1955, papular acrodermatitis is considered a rare disease whose manifestations are mainly cutaneous. The disease is characteristically associated to a non icteric hepatitis with B serologic tests positive. Clinical manifestations of primary, secondary, congenital, and late syphilis are described. Darkfield examination is the most important laboratory method for diagnosis of primary syphilis. Isolated ocular toxoplasmosis developed in two patients with Hodgkin's disease. The diagnosis was made by ophthalmoscopy of the fundus, serologic tests, and evolution. This raises the possibility that Toxoplasma infection and the localization of retinochoroiditic lesions on the macula could be the results of the immunosuppression associated with Hodgkin's disease.

Acute Q fever most commonly manifests as a self-limited febrile illness, pneumonia or hepatitis. We report the case of a 12-year-old child with documented exposure to sources of Coxiella burnetii who was admitted to our hospital because of hemolytic-uremic syndrome.
