The bacteriology of fallen leaves (Phylloplane) from council parks and green spaces in Northern Ireland: Clinical significance for at risk people living with cystic fibrosis (CF).

BACKGROUND: People living with cystic fibrosis (CF) may suffer from chronic respiratory infections due to acquired environmental organisms, ultimately leading in increased morbidity and mortality. Consequently, parents of children living with CF frequently ask their CF healthcare professional about sources and potential routes of transmission of environmental organisms to their child. This allows parents to make an informed decision regarding risk assessment/risk management of outdoor/ nature-based activities. Mitigations can then be put in place to help minimise or absolutely avoid exposure o

The relationship between a less gender-stereotypical parenthood and alcohol-related care and death: a registry study of Swedish mothers and fathers.

BACKGROUND: In general men tend to drink more alcohol and experience more alcohol-related sickness, injuries and mortality than women. In this paper, the overall hypothesis was that increased gender similarity in the division of parental duties would lead to convergence in alcohol-related harm. The aim was to analyse whether the risk of alcohol harm differs between parents who fit a gender-stereotypical versus those with a less gender-stereotypical division of childcare and paid work. METHODS: The study sample was a retrospective registry-based cohort study of all Swedish couples who had thei

Rates of perinatal mortality and low birth weight among 3367 consecutive births in south of Beirut.

3367 consecutive births were reviewed prospectively. Population belongs mainly to a community with relatively underprivileged living conditions. Perinatal mortality was found at a rate of 22.4/1000 B. Early neonatal mortality formed 6.66/1000 B and stillbirth formed 15.83/1000 B. Low birth weight rate was 5.43% of live birth. Analysis of our findings suggests the need to improve follow-up during gestation to avoid complications resulting in macerated stillbirths, and to review the routine of follow-up and care in the immediate period before delivery, during delivery, in the immediate post part

Hand eczema in US employees: a retrospective observational study of workers' compensation and medical claims.

AIMS: This research quantified the impact of hand eczema (HE) on US employees. METHODS: Retrospective observational analysis of real-world data from >500 large, self-insured employers from 2010 through 2024. The database includes detailed workers' compensation (WC) claims: eligibility, duration (days claims were open), medical costs, salary replacement, and absence days. The protocol included employees with medical claims (ICD-10s [L20.x, L23.x, L24.x, L25.x, L30.x] or ICD-9 = 691.x) and WC claims suggestive of HE based on body-parts and nature of injury. The analysis quantified HE-related WC

Does Combining the STarT Back Tool With a Polygenic Risk Score for Chronic Low Back Pain Improve Prediction of Work Disability Over 2 Years?

INTRODUCTION: Chronic back pain (CBP) is a leading cause of work disability worldwide, yet identifying individuals at risk remains difficult due to its multifactorial aetiology. This population-based cohort study investigated whether integrating a polygenic risk score (PRS) for CBP with the STarT Back Tool (SBT)-a widely used psychosocial screening instrument-could improve the prediction of work disability, measured as disability leave days over a 2-year follow-up. METHODS: We analysed data from 1938 participants in the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 with complete genotyping, SBT response

Forgotten costs of systemic lupus erythematosus: estimating indirect healthcare costs in a national prospective observational Canadian lupus cohort.

OBJECTIVES: To assess indirect costs (IDC) due to lost productivity in paid/unpaid labour, stratified by sex, in a national prospective observational multicentre Canadian SLE cohort. METHODS: Patients from six centres reported on lost productivity in paid/unpaid labour. IDC included: absenteeism (time lost from paid labour because of illness), presenteeism (degree of productivity impairment in paid/unpaid labour) and opportunity costs (additional time patients would be working in paid/unpaid labour if not ill). Opportunity costs were the difference between the time patients reported working a

Pain catastrophizing, kinesiophobia and fear-avoidance in non-specific work-related low-back pain as predictors of sickness absence.

The influence of pain catastrophizing, kinesiophobia and fear-avoidance attitudes towards non-specific low-back pain has been scarcely studied in an occupational insurance provider context. The objective of this work is to ascertain the relationship between these psychosocial variables with work absence, its duration and the disability of subjects with work-related low back pain. This is a descriptive observational methodological strategy. All patients with work-related non-specific low back pain who attended to an occupational health hospital during the study period were included consecutivel

Disability and return to work after MRI on suspicion of scaphoid fracture: Influence of MRI pathology and occupational mechanical exposures.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine the prognosis after early MRI on clinical suspicion of scaphoid fracture, hypothesising that MRI pathology is associated with more disability and that MRI pathology and high occupational mechanical hand-arm exposures are associated with slower return to work (RTW). METHODS: We conducted a follow-up study of a cohort of 469 patients, who were scanned in the period 2006 to 2010. The respondents constituted our cohort for disability analysis and the subset that was in the labour market at the time of the trauma constituted our sub-cohort for RTW analysis. Questi

Frailty, prefrailty and employment outcomes in Health and Employment After Fifty (HEAF) Study.

OBJECTIVES: Demographic changes are requiring people to work longer. No previous studies, however, have focused on whether the 'frailty' phenotype (which predicts adverse events in the elderly) is associated with employment difficulties. To provide information, we assessed associations in the Health and Employment After Fifty Study, a population-based cohort of 50-65-year olds. METHODS: Subjects, who were recruited from 24 English general practices, completed a baseline questionnaire on 'prefrailty' and 'frailty' (adapted Fried criteria) and several work outcomes, including health-related job

Psychometric properties of presenteeism scales for musculoskeletal disorders: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review of the psychometric evidence relating to presenteeism scales in workers with musculoskeletal disorders. METHODS: A structured search was conducted in 3 databases (MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase) for articles published between 1966 and 2010. Sixteen articles met eligibility criteria. Pairs of raters used structured tools to analyse these articles through critical appraisal and data extraction. Descriptive synthesis of the psychometric evidence was then performed. RESULTS: Methodological quality ratings of 56% of the studies reviewed reached a level of 75% or

Gender differences in workers with identical repetitive industrial tasks: exposure and musculoskeletal disorders.

OBJECTIVES: For unknown reasons, females run a higher risk than males of work-related musculoskeletal disorders. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether male and female workers, with identical repetitive work tasks, differ concerning risk of disorders, physical or psychosocial exposures. METHODS: Employees in two industries were studied; one rubber manufacturing and one mechanical assembly plant. These industries were selected since in both, large groups of males and females worked side by side performing identical repetitive work tasks. Physical exposure was measured by technical equip

The impact of ice-skating injuries on orthopaedic admissions in a regional hospital.

Since the opening of a temporary ice-rink in our hospital's catchment area, we have observed an increase in patients requiring in-patient treatment for orthopaedic intervention. The authors performed a prospective analysis of all patients admitted to our unit over a one-month period. Epidemiological data, wearing of protective gear and skater experience were collected. Fracture type, treatment required, average length of hospital stay and number of days missed from work was also recorded. Ice-skating injuries accounted for 7.7% of our total admissions over the study period. There was a signifi
