The research reported is an experimental study on the effects of intensified education of parents of children with amblyopia on their understanding of the nature of the defect, its origins and treatment. Parents in the control group were exposed to the ordinary information provided at two departments of paediatric ophthalmology, whereas parents in the experimental group, attending the same clinics, were asked to read a booklet aiming at enhancing their understanding of amblyopia and its treatment. Experimental as well as control subjects were thereafter interviewed about their understanding of

We describe here four sibs, born to consanguineous, healthy, asymptomatic parents. Three of these infants had a rapidly fatal course in the neonatal period; death was attributed to congestive heart failure with radiographic evidence of cardiomegaly in all of them. Necropsy was done in only one of them and showed the typical findings of tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) in the central nervous system (CNS), kidneys, heart, and liver. The fourth sib, currently 2 years old, also has typical signs of TSC, namely hypomelanotic skin macules and calcified subependymal nodules. Both parents and a living

Pseudo-trisomy 13 is defined in chromosomally normal patients with holoprosencephaly and associating features suggestive of trisomy 13. An autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance for this situation is most likely, but a gene for this condition has not yet been mapped. A fetus is presented with phenotypic features reminiscent of trisomy 13 but a normal karyotype, 46, XY. The pregnancy was terminated due to severe fetal malformations. In autopsy, the fetus had semilobar holoprosencephaly, hydrocephaly and dysmorphic features such as hypotelorism, cleft lip, a flat nose with a single nostril,

It has been hypothesised that lower vaccine uptake in childhood among some groups, such as children of lone parents or from larger families, may be due to their higher levels of residential mobility. This paper aimed to explore this association in a large cohort of children born in the UK at the turn of the century. Using multi-variable Poisson regression we found that children who lived in families which had moved during pregnancy or more frequently were more likely to be partially immunised with the primary immunisations and unimmunised against measles, mumps and rubella. Mobility was not as

In the past year, a number of studies were published that illustrated the importance of dietary choices at all ages and singled out pediatricians as useful and vociferous advocates for healthy nutrition in children. Obesity continues to top the list as a major threat to the health of children and adults worldwide and is increasingly being recognized as a direct result of inappropriate nutritional intake. Parental misperceptions and misinformation about their children's diets beginning in infancy and stretching into the college-age years may represent prime targets for pediatricians ready and a

A sister and brother with Vici syndrome are described. They both had oculocutaneous albinism, agenesis of the corpus callosum, cataracts, and cardiomyopathy. They were born to healthy unrelated parents, and had postnatal growth retardation, profound developmental delay, hypotonia, and cataracts. The sister had recurrent infections, and died of progressive heart failure at age 19 months. The brother is alive at age six months with mild cardiomyopathy, and had a single episode of acute bronchitis at age three months. Review of the clinical manifestations of the sibs we described and six children

Chronic stress, few positive life events, and single parenting were associated with AS. CD was associated solely with lower socioeconomic status. Results suggest that dysfunctional interactions are determined not only by maternal psychopathology, but also by an array of contextual factors that are related to …

We describe a female infant with the cervical vertebral fusion (Klippel-Feil) syndrome whom we recognized at birth because of her short neck, restriction of cervical movement, and low posterior hairline. X-ray examination showed anomalies of C1, and between C2-3 and C3-4; thus, we classified her as type II, with variable cervical fusion. At 24 months she was small and manifested hearing deficiency. The mother and father were consanguineous with five common ancestors four generations ago, which resulted in a coefficient of inbreeding equivalent to a second cousin relationship. The parents and g

Variation in parenting behavior is widespread across the animal kingdom, both within and between species. There are two ecotypes of the three-spined stickleback fish (Gasterosteus aculeatus) that exhibit dramatic differences in their paternal behavior. Males of the common ecotype are highly attentive fathers, tending to young from eggs to fry, while males of the white ecotype desert offspring as eggs. As the pituitary is a key regulator in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis between the brain and body, its peptides may influence paren

BACKGROUND: Biallelic loss-of-function variants in SMPD4 cause a rare and severe neurodevelopmental disorder. These variants have been identified in a group of children with neurodevelopmental disorders with microcephaly, arthrogryposis, and structural brain anomalies. SMPD4 encodes a sphingomyelinase that hydrolyzes sphingomyelin into ceramide at neutral pH and can thereby affect membrane lipid homeostasis. SMPD4 localizes to the membranes of the endoplasmic reticulum and nuclear envelope and interacts with nuclear pore complexes.

Neonatal vitamin K prophylaxis is essential to prevent vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB) with a clear benefit compared to placebo. Various routes (intramuscular (IM), oral, intravenous (IV)) and dosing regimens were explored. A literature review was conducted to compare vitamin K regimens on VKDB incidence. Simultaneously, information on practices was collected from Belgian pediatric and neonatal departments. Based on the review and these practices, a consensus was developed and voted on by all co-authors and heads of pediatric departments. Today, practices vary. In line with literature, th

Blepharophimosis, Ptosis, and Epicanthus inversus Syndrome (BPES) is caused by autosomal dominant mutations in FOXL2. There are two forms of BPES: type I (with primary ovarian insufficiency (POI)) and type II (without POI). Data are presented from a large cohort of 177 BPES probands. Diagnostic testing identified a wide range of mutations in 119 mutation-positive patients (including 38 novel mutations). Although FOXL2 mutations are distributed throughout the gene, over 50% were frameshift mutations within a hotspot region of the gene that can be detected using a single primer pair to provide a

High hyperdiploidy, common in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) with a favorable prognosis, is characterized by specific trisomies. Virtually nothing is known about its formation or pathogenetic impact. We evaluated 10 patients with ALL using 38 microsatellite markers mapped to 18 of the 24 human chromosomes to investigate the mechanisms underlying hyperdiploidy and to ascertain the parental origin of the trisomies. Based on the results, doubling of a near-haploid clone and polyploidization with subsequent losses of chromosomes could be excluded. The finding of equal allele dosage f

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of treatment with fluoxetine in reducing symptoms associated with elective mutism.
METHOD: Sixteen subjects with elective mutism were treated with placebo (single-blind) for 2 weeks. Fifteen placebo nonresponders were then randomly assigned to double-blind treatment with fluoxetine at a dose of 0.6 mg/kg/day (N = 6) or continued placebo (N = 9) for an additional 12 weeks. Outcome ratings were completed by the treating psychiatrist, parents, and teachers.
RESULTS: Significant improvements over time on ratings of elective mutism, anxiety, and social anxiety,

This study identified profiles of 13 risk factors across child, family, school, and neighborhood domains in a diverse sample of children in kindergarten from four US locations (n = 750; 45% minority). It then examined the relation of those early risk profiles to externalizing problems, school failure, and low academic achievement in Grade 5. A person-centered approach, latent class analysis, revealed four unique risk profiles, which varied considerably across urban African American, urban White, and rural White children. Profiles characterized by several risks that cut across multiple domains

22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) shows significant clinical heterogeneity. This study aimed to explore the association between clinical heterogeneity in 22q11.2DS and the parental origin of the deletion. The parental origin of the deletion was determined for 61 individuals with 22q11.2DS by genotyping DNA microsatellite markers and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Among the 61 individuals, 29 (47.5%) had a maternal origin of the deletion, and 32 (52.5%) a paternal origin. Comparison of the frequency of the main clinical features between individuals with deletions of maternal or pat
