Sleep characteristics vary between populations. Detrimental sleep habits have cognitive consequences leading to daytime functioning debilitation. Until now no study has been done to investigate sleep characteristics in Iran thoroughly. In this study, we aimed to evaluate Iranians' sleep characteristics and their association with daytime functioning. We conducted a population-based study from January 2017 to May 2019 on people more than 18 years old who lived in 11 urban destricts and 3 rural areas of Tehran, Iran. We randomly selected the participants using a multistage random stratified clust

Insufficient light exposure is assumed to be related to a wide array of health problems, though few studies focus on the role of whole-day light exposure in the habitual setting in the development of these health problems. The current review aims to describe the association between personal light exposure in the habitual setting and sleep-wake rhythm and mood in healthy adults from the general population. Five databases (Embase, Medline Epub, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar) were searched in June 2019. The inclusion criteria included: assessment directly of light exposure on the p

INTRODUCTION: Sleep disturbance is common at high altitude and likely driven by an exaggerated peripheral chemoreceptor response which leads to apnoeic episodes and arousal. We hypothesised that this heightened response is in part mediated through angiotensin II receptors in the carotid body. To examine this link, we studied the effect of angiotensin II receptor blocker on sleep disturbance.
METHODS: Twenty participants paired by age, gender and ACE phenotype ascended to the Whymper Hut (5000 m) on Chimborazo in the Ecuadorean Andes as part of a double-blinded randomised placebo-controlled st

Pain is an unwelcome sleep partner. Pain tends to erode sleep quality and alter the sleep restorative process in vulnerable patients. It can contribute to next-day sleepiness and fatigue, affecting cognitive function. Chronic pain and the use of opioid medications can also complicate the management of sleep disorders such as insomnia (difficulty falling and/or staying asleep) and sleep-disordered breathing (sleep apnea). Sleep problems can be related to various types of pain, including sleep headache (hypnic headache, cluster headache, migraine) and morning headache (transient tension type sec

Our knowledge about the multiple aspects of sleep functions are still insufficient. Concerning the relationship between sleep and sexuality there are four points of view to take into account. Two observations: a spontaneous sexual excitement during REM sleep and that some anxious dreams can produce also sexual arousal. Two hypotheses: the erotic pleasure could be easier to perceive in a sleeping or dreaming state than in a waking state and some sleeping troubles could have an important influence on the sexual life of a couple.

Sleep is a physiological recuperative state susceptible to be disturbed or reduced in length under external stimuli, such as noise, one of the most frequent ambient factors. Sleep disturbance is often accompanied by a reduced quality of the following waking period. The health effects of prolonged exposure to noise concern life quality, as expressed subjectively by the sleeper, as well as probable effect on cardiovascular function through a non specific aggression related to stress.

Post-operative sleep disturbance, with suppression of rapid eye movement sleep and slow wave sleep followed by a subsequent rebound, seems to be related to the magnitude of trauma and thereby to the surgical stress response. In this context, cortisol, autonomic stimulation, and certain cytokines may lead to abnormal sleep. Furthermore, the environment, pain and the administration of analgesics seem to be important factors in the precipitation of sleep abnormalities. Post-operative sleep disturbance may contribute to the development of episodic hypoxaemia, haemodynamic instability and altered m

It is known that EEG findings reveal various abnormalities in patients with involuntary movement. But these findings are not specific. It has been reported to be related to myoclonus and spike. The other involuntary movement is unknown to the relation to EEG findings. The involuntary movement usually disappears during sleep, but a certain involuntary movement appears only during sleep. In the patient with Huntington's chorea and dystonia musculorum deformans, PSG reveals an increase in interspersed wakefulness, decrease of deep sleep and prolongation of REM latency. Periodic limb movement and

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Sleep disorders significantly impact pediatric cognitive development and behavioral health. As pediatric obesity and neurodevelopmental diagnoses rise, primary care providers require updated frameworks to differentiate between anatomical, behavioral, and circadian-driven sleep disturbances to ensure timely intervention.
RECENT FINDINGS: Pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is primarily linked to adenotonsillar hypertrophy, with the CHAT study highlighting that surgical intervention significantly improves quality of life and behavior. Behavioral insomnia remains prevalent

Shift work is a necessity for a society that requires 24/7 services. However, working around the clock can cause a misalignment with our sleep-wake cycle, resulting in sleepiness, impaired cognition and poor health. Due to the prevalence of shift work within safety-critical contexts, there is a need to further understand the causes and consequences of non-typical work on sleep, wellbeing, health and safety, as well as ways to effectively reduce this risk. Furthermore, disorders such as obstructive sleep apnoea, which is the most prevalent medical cause of sleepiness, compound the adverse healt

Individuals and society are dependent on transportation. Individuals move about their world for work, school, healthcare, social activities, religious and athletic events, and so much more. Society requires the movement of goods, food, medicine, etc. for basic needs, commerce, cultural and political exchanges, and all of its dynamic, complex elements. To meet these critical daily demands, the transportation system operates globally and around the clock. Regardless of their role, a basic requirement for the individuals operating the transportation system is that they are awake and at optimal al

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by progressive cognitive decline and prominent disturbances in sleep and wakefulness, reflecting dysfunction across distributed neural networks. The zona incerta (ZI) is a highly heterogeneous subthalamic structure whose organization is defined by spatial location, molecular identity, neurochemical phenotype, and circuit connectivity. Recent studies demonstrate that distinct ZI cell populations and projections contribute to memory processing, novelty seeking, cortical plasticity, sleep promotion, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, transitions to wakefulne

In summary, the evaluation of the tired patient requires an awareness of the various meanings of tiredness. Furthermore, it is important to differentiate normal sleepiness that is a product of circadian rhythm variation in vigilance from pathologic sleepiness. Sleepiness that results from faulty habits, e.g., altered sleep scheduling, drugs, or sleep restriction, can be readily discerned with the aid of a sleep-wake diary. Because subjective sleepiness is often unappreciated, especially in patients with sleep apnea, methods that rely on self-ratings of the severity of sleepiness, e.g., visual

Sleep position recognition plays a crucial role in diagnosing and managing various health conditions, such as sleep apnea, pressure ulcers, and musculoskeletal disorders. Accurate monitoring of body posture during sleep can provide valuable insights for clinicians and support the development of intelligent healthcare systems. This research presents a comparative analysis of sleep position recognition using two distinct approaches: image-based deep learning and accelerometer-based classification. There are five classes: prone, supine, right side, left side, and wake up. For the image-based meth

Orexin is a neurotransmitter that mainly regulates sleep/wake cycle. In addition to its sleep cycle regulatory role, it is involved in regulation of attention, energy homeostasis, neurogenesis and cognition. Several evidences has shown the involvement of orexin in narcolepsy, but there are also growing evidences that shows the disturbance in orexin system in neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Epilepsy, Huntington's diseases and Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Pathogenesis and clinical symptoms of these disorders can be partly attributed from orexin system imbalance.
