Aggressive angiomyxoma: reappraisal of its relationship to angiomyofibroblastoma in a series of 16 cases.

Aggressive angiomyxoma is a distinctive soft tissue tumor associated with a high risk of local recurrence but lacks metastatic potential. This tumour occurs nearly exclusively in the soft tissues of the pelvis and perineum of adult women. The line of differentiation is not firmly established, but a fibroblastic/myofibroblastic origin has been proposed. We report 16 new cases of aggressive angiomyxoma of the pelvic soft tissue in women. In all cases bundles of cells, most often adjacent to vessels, with histological features of smooth muscle cells were identified. In 11 of 14 cases the myoid bu

Uterine adenomyoma: a clinicopathologic review of 26 cases and a review of the literature.

The aim of this study is to highlight the importance of diagnosing uterine adenomyoma and help in differentiating it from other sinister lesions. Adenomyoma of the uterus is a circumscribed nodular aggregate of benign endometrial glands surrounded by endometrial stroma with leiomyomatous smooth muscle bordering the endometrial stromal component. It may be located within the myometrium, or it may involve or originate in the endometrium and grow as a polyp. A retrospective analysis of 26 consecutive cases of uterine adenomyomas diagnosed in the Department of Pathology, Government Medical College

Multiple Epstein-Barr Virus-associated Smooth Muscle Sarcomas of the Gut in a Child Treated for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

A 7-year-old boy with a history of low-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia developed multiple intussusceptions shortly after the end of maintenance therapy. Explorative laparotomy showed >10 polyps in the small intestine. Histologic examination revealed intestinal smooth muscle sarcomas associated with Epstein-Barr virus. The patient recovered well after partial cuneiform resection of the largest polyps and treatment with sirolimus. This case report indicates that these tumors may arise even after moderate transient immunosuppression and that association with acute lymphoblastic leukemia is poss

Nasal angiomyolipoma: Report of two cases of an extremely rare entity.

Nasal angiomyolipoma (AML) are extremely rare tumors and so far <15 cases have been reported in the literature, and this is the first instance that Nasal AML is reported from India. We report two cases of AML arising in the nasal cavity described in 60-year-old male and 50-year-old female patient. Grossly, they were well circumscribed, lobulated masses, and microscopically, they were composed of an intimate mixture of mature fat, smooth muscle cells, and thick-walled varying sized blood vessels. Immunoexpression pattern and histopathology were characteristic. Both the patients had complete res

Multiple oral leiomyomas in an infant: a rare case.

Oral leiomyoma is a benign smooth muscle tumor that occurs most frequently in the uterine myometrium, gastrointestinal tract, and skin. Incidence in the oral cavity is considered uncommon. Most cases are reported in adults, with very few cases described in children. A rare case of multiple leiomyomas localized on the tongue, cheek, and floor of the mouth of an 8-month-old baby is reported. The diagnosis of leiomyoma in the oral cavity is mainly determined by histological studies; however, immunohistochemical tests are recommended in order to differentiate from other tumors. Surgical excision o…

No microsatellite instability using Bethesda panel and revised markers in uterine leiomyomas.

Uterine leiomyomas are benign tumors of the uterus that arise clonally from smooth muscle cells of the myometrium and are very common reason for hysterectomy. The aim of this study was to evaluate microsatellite instability (MSI) in uterine leiomyomas using a set of MSI markers by Promega Corporation (Madison, WI, USA) and the Bethesda guideline. DNA was isolated from paired normal and tumoral tissues in 50 patients with uterine leiomyomas and MSI was analyzed by using seven microsatellite markers. Our result showed that microsatellite stability was found in all uterine leiomyomas. These data

Clinical characteristics of angioleiomyoma of the hard palate: report of a case and an analysis of the reported cases.

Angioleiomyoma is a rare, benign tumor often found in the uterine myometrium, gastrointestinal tract, and skin and seldom observed in the oral and maxillofacial region. The most common site of occurrence in the oral cavity is the lip, followed by the palate, buccal mucosa, and tongue. The number of reports associated with angioleiomyoma arising from the hard palate is very small. The tumor is histologically characterized by the proliferation of mature smooth muscle cells and numerous blood vessels. When the diagnosis is difficult, specific immunohistochemistry is used. This report describes a

Hamartoma of the urachal remnant.

A case of urachal hamartoma occurred in the urinary bladder of a 45-year-old woman, whose presenting symptoms were frequent urination and nocturia. Computed tomographic and contrast radiologic examinations demonstrated a broad-based 5-cm polypoid mass at the dome of the bladder. Grossly the polypoid mass was smooth surfaced and covered by innocent transitional epithelium. The mass and the underlying bladder wall consisted of multiple cystic cavities of various sizes and hyperplastic smooth-muscle bundles. Light microscopy identified numerous tubuloglandular structures, most of them lined by tr

Spindle epithelial tumor with thymus-like differentiation of the thyroid: a case report with pathological and molecular genetics study.

We report an unusual case of spindle epithelial tumor with thymus-like differentiation (SETTLE) of the thyroid present in a 6-year-old boy. The tumor, located at both the left lobe and isthmus, was a circumscribed mass with slightly gritty whorled appearance. Microscopically, the lobulated, highly cellular, spindle cell neoplasm was arranged in intersecting bundles and fascicles separated by fibrous bands. Benign-appearing glands entrapped within fibrous bands and foci of squamous differentiation within spindle cells were observed. Immunohistochemically, the spindle cells were diffusely positi

Perivascular Epithelioid Cell Tumor (PEComa) of the Pancreas in a Patient with Ulcerative Colitis: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are mesenchymal tumors of peculiar cells that are focally associated with blood vessels, and generally have a distinctive bi-phenotypic expression of both smooth muscle and melanocytic markers. There are several entities in the PEComa family, including tumors that arise in the soft tissues and viscera. Frequently affected organs include the lungs (sugar tumors), uterus, broad ligament, colon, small bowel, liver, and pancreas. Ulcerative colitis (UC) has been associated with the development of tumors, especially colorectal and hepatobiliary carcino

Cytological features of uterine tumors resembling ovarian sex-cord tumors in liquid-based cervical cytology: a potential pitfall. Report of a unique and rare case.

Uterine tumors resembling ovarian sex-cord tumors (UTROSCTs) are rare uterine neoplasms of uncertain etiology that resemble the sex cord tumors of the ovary and display a combined sex cord, epithelial, and smooth muscle immunophenotype. Most tumors are associated with a benign clinical course. We report the first cytological description of uterine UTROSCTs in liquid-based cervical cytology (LBC). A menopausal woman was discovered to have a uterine intraluminal polypoid mass protruding through the vagina. A Pap test was performed, and the LBC preparation showed isolated tumor cells with scant c

Broadening the spectrum of SMARCB1-associated malignant tumors: a case of uterine leiomyosarcoma in a patient with schwannomatosis.

Schwannomatosis is a tumor predisposition syndrome characterized by development of multiple intracranial, spinal, and peripheral schwannomas … of SMARCB1-predisposing tumors and demonstrated, for the first time, the association of a malignant smooth muscle tumor to schwannomatosis. Therefore, clinicians should definitely be aware that a constitutional SMARCB1 mutation, which mainly predisposes to benign nerve sheath tumors, may also predispose to aggressive neoplasms throughout life, within an unexpected sp …

Plasmacytoid myoepithelioma of minor salivary glands: report of case with emphasis in the immunohistochemical findings.

Myoepithelioma is a rare benign tumor of the salivary glands and is usually seen in the parotid gland and the minor salivary glands. It was once considered to be a type of pleomorphic adenoma (PA), but myoepitheliomas are today believed to be relatively aggressive tumors. Myoepitheliomas are most common in young adults between the ages of 30 and 50 and there are very few cases reported in individuals less than 18 years of age. We report a case of myoepithelioma located in the hard palate in a 15-year-old Brazilian male. The tumor was composed of plasmacytoid myoepithelial cells. An analysis of

Incidental Discovery of a Urethral Leiomyoma: A Rare Case of an Asymptomatic Benign Tumor With Successful Surgical Management.

Urethral leiomyomas are uncommon benign tumors arising from urethral smooth muscle. These tumors predominantly occur in women of reproductive age and are frequently asymptomatic or incidentally detected. We present the case of a 33-year-old woman with a small, symptomless mass near the urethral meatus. MRI identified a 1.7 × 1.4 cm lesion in the distal urethra, and subsequent cystoscopy-guided surgical excision confirmed the diagnosis of urethral leiomyoma.
