The role of neurocognition and social context in predicting community functioning among formerly homeless seriously mentally ill persons.

OBJECTIVE: To test the influence of neurocognitive functioning on community functioning among formerly homeless persons with serious mental illness and to determine whether that influence varies with social context, independent of individual characteristics. METHODS: In metropolitan Boston, 112 persons in Department of Mental Health shelters were administered a neuropsychological test battery and other measures and then randomly assigned to empowerment-oriented group homes or independent apartments, as part of a longitudinal study of the effects of housing on multiple outcomes. Subjects' case

Changes over time in addiction security index problem dimensions among cocaine abusers1 treated in community settings.

Clinical trials have yielded evidence for the efficacy of treatment for cocaine dependence but are limited in their ability to generalize their results to those attending community treatment programs for drug dependence. This study aimed to determine whether 223 cocaine-dependent males attending one of three different residential community treatment centers in Miami-Dade County, Florida exhibited change in Addiction Severity Index (ASI) problem dimensions similar to those participating in clinical trials. Results of repeated-measures analysis of variance yielded evidence for reductions over ti

Communication intervention for individuals with dual sensory and intellectual impairments.

For individuals with dual sensory and intellectual impairments, the lack of effective communication skills places severe limitations on their learning potential and sense of belonging. Educational intervention for this population has recognized the critical need to develop communication skills, yet the complexity of the individual's needs continues to plague progress. Unique needs and situations of individuals in this category, coupled with extremely limited numbers of trained and experienced professionals, challenge the field to develop creative means of addressing this vital issue. Do developmental communication disorders exist in the signed modality? Perspectives from professionals.

PURPOSE: This study focused on whether developmental communication disorders exist in American Sign Language (ASL) and how they might be characterized. ASL studies is an emerging field; educators and clinicians have minimal access to descriptions of communication disorders of the signed modality. Additionally, there are limited resources for assessing ASL acquisition. This article is designed to raise clinicians' awareness about developmental communication disorders in ASL and categorize types of atypicality that have been witnessed. METHOD: We conducted 4 focus groups and one 1-on-1 intervie

Toward a social ecological understanding of nonsuicidal self-injury in sexual and gender minority individuals: A scoping review.

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI; i.e., intentional, self-inflicted destruction of body tissue without suicidal intention) is a growing mental health concern in the United States. In 2013, NSSI was reclassified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.) as a condition for further study, external to its previous classification as a symptom of borderline personality disorder. NSSI is stigmatized due to its self-inflicted nature, which may be exacerbated among individuals holding multiply marginalized identities, like sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations. Often ev

Social anxiety and posttraumatic stress symptoms: the impact of distressing social events.

Recent evidence supports the notion that relatively common social events, such as public humiliation and teasing, may precipitate or exacerbate symptoms of social anxiety disorder (SAD; Erwin et al., 2006; McCabe et al., 2010). In addition, individuals with SAD often report event-specific hallmark symptoms of posttraumatic stress (PTSS; e.g., intrusive memories, avoidance, hyperarousal) following significant negative social events. Although intriguing, there is a paucity of research data to date exploring the relationships between negative social events, social anxiety, and PTSS. The present s

Social media provides support and education for pregnant people when healthcare does not.

INTRODUCTION: The use of social media for health-related reasons is growing, but there is a dearth of research on the mechanisms of support provided. Understanding how social media groups work could improve communications between providers and patients. Preeclampsia (PreE) is a hypertensive disease of pregnancy that has short- and long-term physical and psychosocial effects. The Preeclampsia, Eclampsia & HELLP Syndrome Survivors Global Support Network (PEHSS) Facebook group is an online, international, moderated support group that provides evidence-based information and community support. Measuring community mental health in developing societies: evaluation of a checklist format in Nepal.

BACKGROUND: There is growing recognition of the importance of mental health problems in developing countries. In large part, however, we have very limited epidemiological data at national and/or community levels about the prevalence of mental illnesses. AIMS: The purpose of this paper is to describe the reliability and validity characteristics of an assessment tool that may be useful for conducting community-level surveys (particularly in rural communities of developing countries) to obtain prevalence rates of mental illnesses. METHODS: We used a sample of adults residing in a rural village

Self-reported allergies and their relationship to several Axis I disorders in a community sample.

OBJECTIVE: Several community studies have identified associations between allergies and depressive symptoms. In this study, we evaluated the association between self-reported allergies and several Axis I disorders in a community population. METHOD: The data source was the 2002 Canadian Community Health Study. This study included the Composite International Diagnostic Interview, and collected self-report data about food and environmental allergies. Crude associations were estimated and logistic regression was subsequently used to adjust for demographic variables. RESULTS: Self-reported allerg

Trends in the prevalence of social phobia in the United States: a synthetic cohort analysis of changes over four decades.

Previous analysis of data from the U.S. National Comorbidity Survey (NCS) [24] suggested that the lifetime prevalence of social phobia in the community has increased significantly in recent cohorts. Furthermore, a latent class analysis of NCS data [21] revealed two primary classes of persons with social phobia: those with exclusive speaking fears and those with one or more other social-evaluative fears. Social phobia in the other social fear group is more persistent, more impairing, and more highly co-morbid with other DSM-III-R disorders. The current report presents data on whether the cohort

[The valproate model of autism].

Autism is a neuro-developmental pathology affecting 1 out of 100 children worldwide. The trauma and social consequences induced by autism are a real public health issue. Clinically, autism is characterized primarily by communications and social interactions deficits associated with repetitive behaviors and restricted interests. The term of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is used to account for the diversity of symptoms that characterize this pathology. Based on observations made in humans, a rodent (rats and mice) model of autism was obtained and validated by prenatal exposure to sodium valpro
