Association of socioeconomic status with long-term outcomes in 1-year survivors of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation.

The relationship of socioeconomic status (SES) with long-term outcomes in allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) survivors has not been well described. We studied the association of SES with the outcomes of 283 consecutive allogeneic HCT recipients transplanted between 2003 and 2012 who had survived for at least 1 year in remission. Median annual household income was estimated using Census tract data and from ZIP code of residence. SES categories were determined by recursive partitioning analysis (low SES (<$51 000/year), N=203; high SES (⩾$51 000/year), N=80). In multivariable an

Neighborhood effects on the long-term well-being of low-income adults.

Nearly 9 million Americans live in extreme-poverty neighborhoods, places that also tend to be racially segregated and dangerous. Yet, the effects on the well-being of residents of moving out of such communities into less distressed areas remain uncertain. Using data from Moving to Opportunity, a unique randomized housing mobility experiment, we found that moving from a high-poverty to lower-poverty neighborhood leads to long-term (10- to 15-year) improvements in adult physical and mental health and subjective well-being, despite not affecting economic self-sufficiency. A 1-standard deviation d

Health trends in Jamaica. Significant progress and a vision for the 21st century.

Health trends in Jamaica have improved considerably during the past century. Life expectancy at birth increased from 38 years in 1900 to 72 years in 2000. The crude death and infant mortality rates declined significantly from 35.7 and 174.3 deaths to 5.1 and 24.4 deaths, respectively, in the same period. The seven leading causes of death in 1945 were infectious diseases while the main causes of mortality and morbidity are now the chronic non-communicable lifestyle diseases, and injuries. Over the past few decades, considerable progress has been made in controlling vaccine preventable diseases

Medical abortion and the potential for new abortion providers: a cautionary tale.

The prochoice movement has expressed much hope that medical abortion will increase the pool of abortion providers because it does not require surgical training and does not need to be performed in specialized settings. By offering a detailed case study of the events surrounding a methotrexate abortion in a rural community health center by a family practice physician who had not previously performed surgical abortion, this article suggests that the diffusion of medical abortion to new providers and new settings may be more complex than some have suggested. The article illustrates that abortion

Associated factors of self-reported psychopathology and health related quality of life among men who have sex with men (MSM) with HIV/AIDS in Dalian, China: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Despite the availability of Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART), the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among HIV-positive men who have sex with men (HIVMSM) in China remains poor. This study aimed to explore the relationship between self-reported psychopathology and HRQoL among HIVMSM in Dalian, China. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 112 HIVMSM. Symptom check list 90 (SCL 90): a measure of psychopathology and World Health Organization quality of life in HIV infection (WHOQOL-HIV-Bref): a measure of HRQoL were used. Correlation and multiple regression analysis were

Increasing isolate and social play in severely disturbed children: intervention and postintervention effectiveness.

A group treatment procedure was instituted in Study 1 to increase the isolate and social play of 4 severely disturbed children. The results indicated that play behavior could be increased significantly by the use of food and social reinforcement and by the use of passive shaping, but that it quickly declined when the intervention was terminated. Social play, however, did remain above baseline levels during extinction. Study 2 replicated the results of Study 1 with a second group of older children, also severely disturbed. However, the procedure of fading adult intervention proved an effective

Epidemiology, anthropology and health education.

Epidemiology gives only a partial picture of a health problem. Without a knowledge of social, cultural, and economic conditions as well, one can fall into farcical errors in designing interventions.

Unexplored issues and future directions in social phobia research.

There have been significant advances in recent years in the understanding and treatment of social phobia, which are summarised in this Special Issue. This paper outlines and describes some further priority areas for future research. It is suggested that social phobia should be investigated as a developmental condition, with special attention to the first two years of life; and subtypes of social phobia be further explored and their implication for treatment. Social phobia is often comorbid with other disorders and its relationship with these disorders warrants further investigation with respec

Social cognition in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome and idiopathic developmental neuropsychiatric disorders.

BACKGROUND: 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is a common recurrent neurogenetic condition associated with elevated risk for developmental neuropsychiatric disorders and intellectual disability. Children and adults with 22q11DS often exhibit marked social impairment as well as neurocognitive deficits, and have elevated rates of both autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and psychosis. However, the relationship between the basic processes of social cognition and cognitive ability has not been well studied in 22q11DS. Here, we examined differences in social cognition in 22q11DS, relative to multiple

Rats choose alcohol over social reward in an operant choice procedure.

The interaction between social factors and alcohol addiction is complex, with potential for both positive and negative contributions to drug use and abstinence. Positive social connections are an important component in successful abstinence, and yet the social context of alcohol use can also lead to relapse. Recently it was shown that rats overwhelmingly choose social reward over methamphetamine, cocaine, and heroin in a discrete choice procedure, and that prolonged choice for social reward attenuates incubation of drug craving. The extent to which this effect generalises to rats trained to se

Rank- and threat-dependent social modulation of innate defensive behaviors.

Fear and defense are among the most fundamental survival behaviors and are profoundly influenced by the social environment in group-living animals. However, it remains poorly understood how social context-and particularly dominance hierarchy, a defining feature of many social species-modulates defensive strategies under naturalistic conditions. To address this question, we investigated the social modulation of innate fear in mice exposed to two ethologically relevant threats: a transient visual looming stimulus and a sustained predatory threat posed by a live rat. We found that social presence

The role of social engagement and identity in community mobility among older adults aging in place.

UNLABELLED: The purpose of this study was to understand how neighbourhoods - as physical and social environments - influence community mobility. Seeking an insider's perspective, the study employed an ethnographic research design. Immersed within the daily lives of 6 older adults over an 8-month period, auditory, textual, and visual data was collected using the "go-along" interview method. During these interviews, the researcher accompanied participants on their natural outings while actively exploring their physical and social practices by asking questions, listening, and observing. Findings

How Should Clinicians Ally With Patients Whose Health Is Unlikely to Be Improved by Even Numerous Clinical Encounters?

Patients experiencing homelessness and mental illness face conditions and circumstances that deserve focused ethical and clinical attention. The first commentary on the case applies insights from qualitative research about social determinants of health to these patients' care and dignity. The second commentary describes 3 kinds of power wielded by physicians#x2014;charismatic, social, and Aesculapian#x2014;each of which is considered in terms of whether and to what extent physicians' power should be owned, aimed, or shared.

Neural Correlates of Social Perception in Children with Autism: Local versus Global Preferences.

The Weak Central Coherence account of autism spectrum disorders posits that individuals with ASD utilize a detail-oriented information processing bias. While this local bias is helpful in visual search tasks, ASD individuals falter in social cognition tasks where coherence is advantageous. The present study examined the neural correlates of Weak Central Coherence in ASD during visual and social processing. Fifteen ASD and sixteen typically developing children/adolescents completed a social/visual information processing task in an fMRI scanner. The stimuli consisted of human characters, compose

Learning to fear and cope with a natural stressor: individually and socially acquired corticosterone and avoidance responses to biting flies.

Animals learn to recognize and respond to a variety of dangerous factors, with biting and blood-feeding flies being among the most prevalent of natural stressors. Here we describe the behavioral avoidance and hormonal (corticosterone) stress responses to biting fly exposure and the roles of individual and social learning in the acquisition of these fear-associated responses. Male mice exposed to a single 30-min session of attack by intact biting flies (stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans L.) exhibited increased plasma corticosterone levels and active self-burying responses to avoid the flies. When
