Self-stigma and decision about medication use among a sample of Nigerian outpatients with schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Self-stigma is a common barrier to maintenance therapy and recovery in schizophrenia. We investigated the prevalence of the decision not to use medication as prescribed and describe the multidimensional relationship of self-stigma with such a decision in 370 adults with schizophrenia. METHOD: A multivariate binary logistic regression model was used to examine the relationship between specific aspects of self-stigma (alienation, perceived discrimination, stigma resistance, stereotype endorsement and social withdrawal) and the decision not to take medication, while controlling for ot

Does including violent crime rates in ecological regression models of sexually transmissible infection rates improve model quality? Insights from spatial regression analyses.

UNLABELLED: Background Violent crime rates are often correlated with the hard-to-measure social determinants of sexually transmissible infections (STIs). In this study, we examined whether including violent crime rate as an independent variable can improve the quality of ecological regression models of STIs. METHODS: We obtained multiyear (2008-12) cross-sectional county-level data on violent crime and three STIs (chlamydia, gonorrhoea, and primary and secondary (P&S) syphilis) from counties in all the contiguous states in the US (except Illinois and Florida, due to lack of data). We used two

Fusiform gyrus responses to neutral and emotional faces in children with autism spectrum disorders: a high density ERP study.

Face processing is a neural mechanism that allows understanding social information and cues conveyed by faces, whose dysfunction has been postulated to underlie some of the behavioral impairments characterizing autism spectrum disorders (ASD). A special region of the cortex, the fusiform gyrus (FG), is believed to be the specific area for processing face features and emotions. However, behavioral, fMRI and ERP studies addressed to investigate the role of FG dysfunction in ASD have led to conflicting results. Using a high-density EEG system, we recorded the face-sensitive ERP to neutral and emo

Public health crises: the development of a consensus document on their management in Spain.

Several public health crises in Europe have led to sustained outbreaks, political problems, or have generated social alarm. For this reason, a nationwide study was conducted in Spain with the objective to determine which public health events provoke the most frequent crises, to reach a consensus regarding the appropriate actions to be taken when responding to public health crises, and to provide recommendations for their management. The events which had most frequently provoked crises between 1999 and 2004 were identified. A consensus was obtained by public health experts from the 17 Autonomou

A Protocol for a Cluster Randomized Trial on the Effect of a "feeding buddy" Program on adherence to the Prevention of Mother-To-Child-Transmission Guidelines in a Rural Area of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: The uptake of prevention of mother-to-child-transmission (PMTCT) services has improved in South Africa but challenges remain, including adherence to the World Health Organization's (WHO) PMTCT recommendations of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF), taking antiretroviral medication (ARV); testing for early infant diagnosis; and reducing stigma. Women who practice EBF for the first 6 months are less likely to transmit HIV to their infants, yet only 7% of women EBF for 6 months in South Africa. Adherence to these recommendations remains challenging because of difficulties relating to disclo

Prevalence and Clinical Correlates of Autistic Traits Across Eating Disorder Diagnoses: A Retrospective Analysis of Clinical Service Data.

Background: Autistic traits are overrepresented among individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) and are associated with greater eating disorder (ED) psychopathology, psychological distress, and work and social functioning difficulties in this population. However, less is known about the prevalence and clinical associations of autistic traits in other ED presentations, such as bulimia nervosa (BN). This study examined the prevalence of autistic traits and their associations with ED psychopathology, psychological distress, and work and social functioning difficulties in a transdiagnostic ED sample.

Impact of prenatal depression, anxiety and stress on low birth weight: a retrospective case-control study in Karachi, Pakistan.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal psychological distress is common in Pakistan, yet it remains underaddressed in antenatal care. This study aimed to examine whether prenatal depression, anxiety and stress are associated with low birth weight (LBW) and whether perceived social support mitigates risk among mothers delivering at two tertiary care hospitals in Karachi, Pakistan. METHODS: This was a retrospective case-control study conducted at Dr Ruth K.M. Pfau Civil Hospital and Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. Mothers were enrolled within 48 hours of singleton live birth. Cases were mothers of infants

Long-term welfare consequences of sleep apnea in 20-64-year-olds-influence of gender: a nationwide cohort study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with a significant welfare impact. Little information is available about long-term welfare consequences for women and men. Here we evaluated the long-term gender-associated welfare of patients with OSA. METHODS: Using data from the Danish National Patient Registry and other public databases, all patients aged 20-64 years with a diagnosis of OSA were included. They were compared with citizens matched by age, sex, marital status, and community location, in a ratio of 1:4. All health and social costs were included from public registri

Profile of impairments in social and non-social cognition in vascular dementia compared to Alzheimer's disease and behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia.

OBJECTIVE: Impairments in emotion recognition, a crucial component of social cognition, have been previously demonstrated in patients with behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bv-FTD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, to date, it is unclear whether patients with early-stage vascular dementia (VaD) display deficient emotion recognition. We investigated profiles of impairments in emotion recognition and non-social cognitive functions, comparing VaD patients to bv-FTD and AD patients, and healthy control participants (HC). METHOD: Eighty-one memory clinic patients with early-stage Va

Closeness of Social Media Contacts and Loneliness Among US Adults: A Nationally Representative Study.

OBJECTIVES: Loneliness is strongly linked to morbidity and mortality. While social media use has been associated with increased loneliness among adolescents, little research has examined this association among adults. It is also not clear whether it is better to communicate only with close personal friends or with people one has never met in person. We examined whether real-life closeness of social media contacts was associated with loneliness among a nationally representative sample of US adults. METHODS: Participants included 1512 US adults aged 30 to 70 years who were surveyed in July and

Double-blind, sham-controlled, pilot study of trigeminal nerve stimulation for autism spectrum disorder.

Trigeminal nerve stimulation (TNS) is a minimal-risk, noninvasive neuromodulation method with growing evidence of efficacy across psychiatric conditions. However, its safety and potential effects in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) remain underexplored. This exploratory pilot study aimed primarily to evaluate the safety and tolerability, and secondarily to explore changes in ASD-related symptoms - including impairments in social communication and reciprocity, attention, executive functioning, emotional regulation, sleep, and sensory processing - in children with ASD, and to examine associated ch

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation of the Temporoparietal Junction in Autism Spectrum Disorder: Results of a Phase-IIa Randomized, Double-Blind, Sham-Controlled Feasibility Study.

Activation of the temporoparietal junction (TPJ) is reduced in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) during social cognitive tasks. Therefore, anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) of the TPJ may enhance social cognitive abilities in autistic individuals. In a multicenter, randomized, sham-controlled, double-blind parallel-group Phase-IIa trial, we investigated feasibility, safety, and effect sizes of 10 sessions of anodal tDCS of the bilateral TPJ at 2 mA as an add-on to computer-based social cognitive training in 10- to 17-year-old youth with autism. Feasibility of recruitment was l

Unveiling the landscape of antistigma interventions for individuals with substance use disorders: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Stigma against persons living with substance use disorders (PLSUD) fosters social and health inequities. AIM: We aimed to map different populations targeted by antistigma interventions, analyze specific characteristics of these interventions, and identify and categorize the theoretical frameworks used in these interventions. METHODS: We examined randomized controlled trials and quasi or pre-experimental studies targeting stigma against PLSUD. Using two English databases, our analysis involved mapping study populations, antistigma interventions, and trial characteristics through a

Associations between frequency of exposure to peer-generated alcohol-related posts and alcohol use within a social network of college students.

Peer alcohol use, commonly assessed via perceptions of how many drinks peers consume, is a robust predictor of college drinking. These perceptions are formed by in-person exposure to peer drinking but also may be affected by seeing alcohol-related content (ARC) shared on peer social media accounts. Most research assesses exposure by asking about the frequency of ARC sharing by a whole friend group, potentially missing influences from specific friends. Social network methods collect information about specific friends and their behavior but few studies have used these methods to examine the effe

Blindness of intentions and metacognitive deficits during moral judgements in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown that moral judgments are affected by social cognitive abilities, such as theory of mind (ToM). This study examines how information about an actor's beliefs and the consequences of their actions affect the moral evaluation of the character's behavior in social events. Our research builds upon previous studies, which have shown that these factors contribute differently to moral judgments made by both adults and young children. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore how participants with schizophrenia and healthy controls read stories about social situati

The impact of conditional cash transfers for HIV prevention on peer relationships: perspectives from female recipients and non-recipients in HPTN 068.

CCTs are currently being explored for HIV prevention among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Southern Africa. However, little is known about how CCT geared towards adolescents' influence peer relationships, despite evidence that peer relationships form a critical part of development in adolescence. This article presents findings from a qualitative study that explored CCT recipients' and non-recipients' perspectives on the impact of CCTs paid to AGYW on peer relationships.HPTN 068 was a randomised controlled trial that assessed whether providing CCT to AGYW and their households reduces

Leveraging Social Media Activity and Machine Learning for HIV and Substance Abuse Risk Assessment: Development and Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Social media networks provide an abundance of diverse information that can be leveraged for data-driven applications across various social and physical sciences. One opportunity to utilize such data exists in the public health domain, where data collection is often constrained by organizational funding and limited user adoption. Furthermore, the efficacy of health interventions is often based on self-reported data, which are not always reliable. Health-promotion strategies for communities facing multiple vulnerabilities, such as men who have sex with men, can benefit from an automa
