The impact of educational live action role-playing games on social-emotional competence: a mixed-method study with Chinese college students.

BACKGROUND: Social-emotional competence is critical for university students' personal development and social adaptation, and exploring effective educational interventions in this regard is an important research area. Live action role-playing games (LARPs) have shown potential in promoting social skills and emotional regulation, but their specific impacts on Chinese university students remain largely unexplored. OBJECTIVE: This mixed-method research was designed to explore the influence of real-time educational role-playing games (LARPs) on the social-emotional competence of Chinese university

When traits meet the moment: State and perceived partner motivations interact with approach-avoidance temperament to predict social preferences in daily life.

Social interactions are influenced by personality traits such as approach-avoidance motives. However, it remains unclear how traits, states, and interpersonal perceptions interact to shape everyday social experiences - and for whom their interactions are most consequential. Addressing this gap is critical for advancing personality-in-context models and identifying mechanisms underlying deficits in interpersonal functioning. A two-week Ecological Momentary Assessment was conducted with 136 participants (N = 3,991 social interactions), who reported on motivational states, partner perceptions, an

Subjective meanings of quality of life and related coping mechanisms: insights from a reflective thematic analysis among people living with HIV in Antwerp, Belgium.

Despite advances in HIV treatment, people living with HIV face intersecting health and social challenges shaping their quality of life (QoL). Little is known about how people living with HIV in Belgium conceptualise their quality QoL, cope with stressors, and experience their HIV care. We conducted 18 purposively sampled in-depth interviews, analysing them inductively using reflexive thematic analysis from an interpretative perspective. Participants described good QoL as a balance across physical, mental, and social health, underpinned by socio-economic stability and legal security. Key influe

Internal Bayesian precision modulates the neural representation of social attention: Disentangling implicit and explicit components via model-informed multivariate EEG analysis.

Social attention integrates sensory cues with high-level cognitive expectations, yet the generative mechanisms through which implicit orienting and explicit belief-driven modulation interact remain poorly understood. This ambiguity complicates the distinction between specialized social modules and domain-general attentional processes. We combined a dynamic cueing task with hierarchical Bayesian modeling and model-informed multivariate EEG decoding to address this. Behavioral results revealed a computational double dissociation: symbolic arrow cues elicited heterogeneous strategies, whereas ave

Pension reforms, economic security, and mental health: The need for a human rights-based approach.

Pension systems play a crucial role in providing economic security and supporting well-being in later life. However, as governments implement reforms to ensure financial sustainability-such as raising the retirement age, reducing benefits, and shifting to defined-contribution schemes-these measures often overlook their psychological and social consequences. Pension insecurity has been linked to heightened stress, anxiety, and depression, as well as increased social isolation, particularly among vulnerable populations, including those in physically demanding jobs, low-income workers, and indivi

Dissociable Roles Within the Social Brain for Self-Other Processing: A HD-tDCS Study.

Theories of right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ) function in social cognition include self-other distinction, self-inhibition, or embodied rotation, whereas the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) is associated with integrating social information. However, no study has provided causal evidence for dissociable roles of the rTPJ and dmPFC in social cognition. A total of 52 healthy young adults were stratified to receive either dmPFC or rTPJ anodal high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) in a sham-controlled, double-blinded, repeated measures design. Social connections and mortality in Chilean older adults: analysis of 20 years of follow-up.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the effect of social connections aspects on mortality among the Chilean older population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cohort study analyzed a sample of 2 265 community-dwelling adults aged 60+ from Santiago, Chile, with a median follow-up of 15 years. Social connection clusters were derived via cluster analysis across five dimensions: household size, marital status, group participation, recreational social activities, and perceived social support. All-cause mortality (2000-2019) was the outcome. Cox regression models, Kaplan-Meier curves, and interaction analyses were c

Social fearfulness in the human brain.

Social fearfulness is expressed on a continuum of severity from moderate distress to incapacitating fear. The present article focuses on the brain states associated with this broad dimension of social anxiety in humans. In total, 70 published studies are summarized documenting the neural correlates of social anxiety during states of rest, threat-related cognitive-affective activation, and acute symptom provocation. Neural exaggeration in limbic (amygdala) and paralimbic (insula) regions appears to be associated with functional outcomes involving increased attention for and processing of social

Mapping social work scholarship in child and adolescent mental health: a bibliometric analysis of Web of Science and Scopus, 2000-2025.

BACKGROUND: Child and adolescent mental health care depends on coordination among pediatric services, mental health care, schools, child welfare, family support, and community systems. Social work occupies a boundary-spanning position in this landscape, yet the organization and development of the relevant scholarship remain unclear. METHODS: Records published between 2000 and 2025 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection and Scopus. The search captured literature explicitly identified as psychiatric, mental health, or clinical social work together with broader social work schola

Safe but broken: a critical review on psychological risks of childhood in refugee camps.

The concept of severely deprived children has recently been integrated into the study of refugee children. While refugee camps are designed to ensure physical safety, they often expose young residents to chronic deprivation, limited mobility, and psychosocial isolation. Conversely, urban resettlement may foster autonomy and integration yet introduce new forms of structural and cultural stress. Understanding how environmental context shapes trauma and coping among refugee youth is essential to designing context-sensitive interventions. A qualitative brief meta-synthesis was previously conducted

Birthweight of babies born to migrant mothers - What role do integration policies play?

Birthweights of babies born to migrant women are generally lower than those of babies born to native-born women. Favourable integration policies may improve migrants' living conditions and contribute to higher birthweights. We aimed to explore associations between integration policies, captured by the Migrant Integration Policy Index (MIPEX), with offspring birthweight among migrants from various world regions. In this cross-country study we pooled 31 million term birth records between 1998 and 2014 from ten high-income countries: Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Japan, Norway, Sp

Integrating multiple immunogenetic data sources for feature extraction and mining somatic hypermutation patterns: the case of "towards analysis" in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia.

BACKGROUND: Somatic Hypermutation (SHM) refers to the introduction of mutations within rearranged V(D)J genes, a process that increases the diversity of Immunoglobulins (IGs). The analysis of SHM has offered critical insight into the physiology and pathology of B cells, leading to strong prognostication markers for clinical outcome in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL), the most frequent adult B-cell malignancy. In this paper we present a methodology for integrating multiple immunogenetic and clinocobiological data sources in order to extract features and create high quality datasets for SHM

Inequality in People's Minds: An Integrative Psychological Framework of Perceptions of Economic Inequality.

Academic AbstractPeople's perceptions of economic inequality are important predictors of their political attitudes and behaviors. Scholars across the social sciences have worked to understand people's (mis)perceptions of inequality. Yet, scholars currently lack a common framework for integrating emerging findings and conceptualizing how these perceptions are formed. Here, we propose an integrative framework to help researchers highlight the psychological processes underlying how inequality is perceived. We draw on theories of perception, cognition, developmental, and social psychology to ident

Access, Utilization, and Quality of Behavioral Health Integration in Medicaid Managed Care.

IMPORTANCE: Many states have moved from models that carve out to those that carve in or integrate behavioral health in their Medicaid managed care organizations (MCOs), but little evidence exists about the effect of this change. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association of the transition to integrated managed care (IMC) in Washington Medicaid with health services use, quality, health-related outcomes, and measures associated with social determinants of health. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used difference-in-differences analyses of Washington State's 2014 to 2019 staggered
