Examining the Relationship Between Anxiety Severity and Autism-Related Challenges During Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Children with Autism.

PURPOSE: Using data from a randomized clinical trial evaluating cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for children with autism and co-occurring anxiety, this study examined the relationship between autism features and anxiety symptoms throughout CBT. METHODS: Two multilevel mediation analyses were run which examined the mediating role of changes in anxiety for changes in two core features of autism, (a) repetitive and restrictive behaviors (RRBs) and (b) social communication/interaction impairments, between pre- and post-treatment. RESULTS: Indirect effects between time and autism characteristi

Association of GTF2i in the Williams-Beuren syndrome critical region with autism spectrum disorders.

Duplications of 7q11.23, deleted in Williams-Beuren Syndrome, have been implicated in autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). A 1.5 Mb duplication was identified in one girl with severe expressive language deficits and anxiety among 1,142 ASD individuals screened for this duplication. Family-based association studies of Tag-SNPs in three genes (STX1A , CYLN2 and GTF2i) in two multiplex autism family cohorts revealed strong association of two GTF2i SNPs and their haplotype in Cohort 1 and the combined families. The risk alleles and haplotype were associated with severe problems in social interaction …

Early social deficits in TgF344-AD rats are accompanied by sex-specific parvalbumin-positive interneuron reduction and altered brain oscillations in the hippocampal CA2.

Social withdrawal and deficits in social cognition are hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD). While early deficits in social behavior and me … d female rats. We counted the number of PV+ interneurons and recorded local field potentials during social interactions in the hippocampal CA2 - a region critical for social information processing. Our results show decreased social interest and novelty preference in TgF344-AD male and female rats. However, reduced PV+ interneuron numbers were observed only in female …

Slow to warm up: the role of habituation in social fear.

Neural habituation allows familiar information to be ignored in favor of salient or novel stimuli. In contrast, failure to rapidly habituate likely reflects deficits in the ability to learn that an environment is predictable, familiar and safe. Differences in habituation rate may underlie individual differences in the tendency to approach or avoid novelty; however, many questions remain unanswered. Given the importance of adaptive social functioning, here we tested whether habituation differences to social stimuli are associated with differences in social fearfulness, a trait that ranges from

Socially shared emotions shape the activity of the medial prefrontal cortex during inference of others' emotional states.

The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) weighs options during decision-making, but its role in inferring competing emotional states and how this process changes with age, remain unclear. We recorded brain activity with functional MRI while 20 young and 40 older adults inferred the emotions of actors shown in ecological yet controlled social interactions. Socially shared representations about the timing, accuracy, and uncertainty of emotional inferences were defined using response distributions from an independent sample viewing the same scenes. mPFC activity is sensitive to emotional inference and…

Social support and the course of bipolar disorder.

The current study prospectively examined the impact of social support on symptom severity and recovery from episodes in bipolar disorder, both as a direct influence and as a buffer of life events. Fifty-nine individuals with Bipolar I disorder were followed longitudinally with monthly symptom severity interviews. Social support was measured by the Interpersonal Support Evaluation List and the Interview Schedule for Social Interaction, and life events were assessed using the Life Events and Difficulties Schedule. Individuals with low social support took longer to recover from episodes and were …

Elder mistreatment and psychological resilience: the moderating role of social support.

This study examines the possible consequence of elder mistreatment on resilience and whether social support moderates this posited association, using a rural sample of 432 community-dwelling older Chinese adults aged 60 to 79 years. Elder abuse included verbal abuse, physical abuse, or financial exploitation. Social support was measured by The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). Resilience was represented by a seven-item scale. Hierarchical regression models indicated that mistreatment is significantly related to low levels of resilience when confounding factors are adj

Social functioning in adults with visual impairment from minority ethnic communities in the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: Visual impairment (V.I.) has been associated with a negative impact on social functioning, while social support can impact on well-being in those with V.I. Adults from minority ethnic communities (MEC) are projected to make up an increasing proportion of adults living with V.I. in the UK, but limited research has explored their social functioning. This article provides a preliminary insight into social functioning among MEC adults living with V.I. in the UK. METHODS: The article reports findings from a secondary analysis of V.I. Lives survey data. V.I. Lives was a UK telephone sur

A holistic understanding of challenges faced by people with low vision.

Prior research on visual impairments has documented specific challenges that people with low vision face such as reading and mobility. Yet, much less focus has been given to the relationships between seemingly separate challenges such as mobility and social interactions; limiting the potential of services and assistive technologies for people with low vision. To address this gap, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 30 low vision participants and examined the relationships between challenges and coping strategies overarching three facets of life - functional, psychological, and social.…

A 45-year follow-up study of adolescent schizophrenia. Part II: Age of disease onset, type of onset of the disorder and presence of developmental burden in the context of disease course and long-term social functioning of patients.

OBJECTIVES: Research on predictors of adolescent schizophrenia, especially that based on long-term follow-up studies, is rare in the literature. In our analysis, we examine the relationships of the age of disease onset, type of onset of the disorder and the presence of developmental burden with clinical and social indicators of the disease course. METHODS: A total of 69 patients hospitalized at an average age of 16 years (time point 0) due to schizophrenia (retrospectively re-diagnosed according to ICD-10 criteria) and re-examined 5 years later (time point 1 - personal examination of 41 indiv

Ten-year follow-up of social functioning and behaviour problems in people with schizophrenia and related disorders.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, several variables in the course of schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders have been studied. However, an instrumental analysis of the evolution of social functioning and behaviour problems has scarcely been explored. AIM: To analyse the evolution of social functioning and behaviour problems and find any diagnosis or gender differences. METHOD: The Social Functioning Scale (SFS) and the Behaviour Problems Inventory (BPI) were administered in Stages I (2003-2007) and II (2014-2017) to 100 close relatives of patients under treatment at a Community Mental Heal

Epigenetic impact of the social and physical environment on brain and body.

Modern biomedical scientists are often trapped in silos of knowledge and practice, such as those who study brain structure, function and behavior, on the one hand, and body systems and disorders, on the other. Scientists and physicians in each of those silos have not often paid attention to the brain-body communication that leads to multi-morbidity of systemic and brain-related disorders [eg. depression with diabetes or cardiovascular disease]. Outside of biomedicine, social scientists have long recognized the impact of the social and physical environment on individuals and populations but hav
