The paradox of social capital and gendered suicide ideation: Findings from correlated random effects (CRE) models.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is twofold. First, it examines how social capital accessible through interpersonal contacts (e.g., family, friends, neighbors, coworkers) is related to suicide ideation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Second, it investigates whether this relationship varies across gender groups. METHODS: Two waves of longitudinal data (n = 8953 person-years) are drawn from the Seoul Young Adult Panel Survey fielded during the height of the pandemic (2021-2022). For estimation strategy, the correlated random effects (CRE) analysis is used, along with logit and probit regressi

Identification of mRNA expression profiles and their characterization in age-related hearing loss.

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL), is a pervasive health problem worldwide. ARHL seriously affects the quality of life and reportedly leads to social isolation and dementia in the elderly. ARHL is caused by the degeneration or disorders of cochlear hair cells and auditory neurons. Numerous studies have verified that genetic factors contributed to this impairment, however, the mechanism behind remains unclear. In this study, we analyzed an mRNA expression dataset (GSE49543) from the GEO database. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between young control mice and presbycusis mice were analyzed u

Mechanistic modeling of social conditions in disease-prediction simulations via copulas and probabilistic graphical models: HIV case study.

As social and economic conditions are key determinants of HIV, the United States 'National HIV/AIDS Strategy (NHAS)', in addition to care and treatment, aims to address mental health, unemployment, food insecurity, and housing instability, as part of its strategic plan for the 'Ending the HIV Epidemic' initiative. Although mechanistic models of HIV play a key role in evaluating intervention strategies, social conditions are typically not part of the modeling framework. Challenges include the unavailability of coherent statistical data for social conditions and behaviors. We developed a method,

Divergent network connectivity changes in behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Resting-state or intrinsic connectivity network functional magnetic resonance imaging provides a new tool for mapping large-scale neural network function and dysfunction. Recently, we showed that behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia and Alzheimer's disease cause atrophy within two major networks, an anterior 'Salience Network' (atrophied in behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia) and a posterior 'Default Mode Network' (atrophied in Alzheimer's disease). These networks exhibit an anti-correlated relationship with each other in the healthy brain. The two diseases also feature diverge

Whether cognitive behavioral therapy is effective for Alzheimer's disease: A protocol for systematic review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by impaired memory and cognitive judgment. It is the leading cause of dementia in the elderly, and its high morbidity and mortality have also brought a significant social burden. So far, there is no method can completely cure Alzheimer's dementia, but there are many non-drug treatments that have been praised by people, especially the cognitive behavioral therapy proposed in recent years. The main purpose of this article is to evaluate the effect of cognitive behavioral therapy on the cognitive function

Same old, same old: Daily sequence and well-being in later life using ecological momentary data.

OBJECTIVES: Understanding whether daily routine reflects adaptive stability or constrained opportunities for enrichment remains an open question in aging research. METHODS: This study develops a Weekly Routine Index (WRI) using Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) data from 253 older adults in the Social Environment and Cognitive Health in Urban and Rural Areas (SECHURA) to quantify within-person similarity in daily activities and co-presence with social partners (4,025 total EMAs). We computed pairwise similarities between each respondent's daily sequences to generate activity- and co-prese

Insights on associations between the frequency of use of diverse social media products and social networks use disorder tendencies from a German speaking sample.

OBJECTIVE: In the present work we investigate how individual differences in at least occasionally using distinct social media platforms is linked to social networks use disorder (SNUD) tendencies. A final sample of n = 2200 participants filled in the AICA-C-9 measure to get insights into individual differences in overuse of social media and participants also indicated which platforms they used at least once a month. RESULTS: The analysis revealed a robust positive association between number of at least occasionally used social media apps and SNUD tendencies (r = .44, p < .001). Further, platf

Global electric vehicle network: Structural patterns and news sentiment.

Although the expansion of electric vehicles (EVs) is altering international trade patterns, the interaction between market organization and policy intervention remains underdeveloped. Using a social network perspective, we describe the global EV trade network from 2012 to 2021 and show that the U.S., China, Germany, and Japan occupy central positions in cross-border exchanges. We then employ an extended gravity model to examine whether media sentiment is associated with trade flows. A sentiment measure derived from the GDELT database suggests that favorable coverage is associated with higher E

Comparison of effects of interventions to promote the mental health of parents of children with autism: A systematic review and network meta-analysis.

Individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders often face persistent challenges in social interaction and engage in repetitive and stereotyped behaviors. Parenting a child with autism can profoundly affect parents both physically and psychologically, potentially leading to negative impacts on their mental health. This study employs a network meta-analysis methodology to evaluate the comparative effectiveness of mental health interventions specifically designed for parents of autistic children. A total of 69 empirical intervention studies involving 4213 parents of autistic children were i

Drivers and Outcomes of Engagement in Non-Formal Special Interest Groups Among Japanese Emergency Physicians: An Activity Theory Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Emergency medicine requires physicians to manage high uncertainty, time constraints, and diverse responsibilities. To sustain their careers, continuous professional development (CPD) and psychological well-being are crucial. While participation in formal learning is often limited by time and location, autonomous "non-formal" Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are emerging as flexible learning spaces. This study aimed to address two research questions (RQs): (1) What drives Japanese emergency physicians (EPs) to engage in non-formal SIGs? (2) What do EPs learn and gain through these act

Mapping the Structures of Adverse Childhood Experiences: A Network Analysis and a Sex-Differentiated Structural Framework for Prevention and Intervention.

This study applied network analysis to examine the internal structure of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and to develop a network-derived structural framework for prevention and intervention. Using nationally representative data (N = 4,008), we estimated the sex-stratified networks of the 13 ACE domains. Results revealed clustered structures and bridging mechanisms that linked distinct ACE domains. Emotional abuse and witnessing domestic violence consistently emerged as sex-invariant anchors with high centrality and bridging influence. In addition, we identified sex-differentiated cascade

The smell of success and failure: the role of intrinsic and extrinsic chemical signals on the social behavior of crayfish.

Animals commonly modify their behavior in the presence of a conspecific or in response to signals. This is particularly true in the context of aggressive exchanges, which animals use to form networks of social relationships and to communicate social status associated with those relationships. Although hierarchical structures are a widespread phenomenon that has been studied extensively, the dynamic communication processes, specifically chemical communication in this review, is relatively overlooked. In particular, it is the exchange of information during agonistic interactions that mediates hi
