Social differences between the general population and tuberculosis patients in Slovakia.

OBJECTIVES: Point out the social specifics of patients with tuberculosis, which persist despite the socioeconomic development of Slovak society. METHODS: A questionnaire survey was conducted on a sample of consecutive patients with newly diagnosed tuberculosis during the first half of 2023. The collected data were aggregated and compared with the results of European Health Interview Survey (EHIS) in 2019. RESULTS: We found significant differences in the distribution of the level of education, labour status, nutritional and marital status, financial poverty, smoking habits, alcohol consumptio

Comprehensive prosthetic rehabilitation of a case of the orofacial digital syndrome.

Maxillofacial defects can result from trauma, treatment of neoplasm, or congenital malformations. Many a time due to the size, location of the defect, or because of the patient's medical condition, surgical reconstruction may not be possible. In these cases, rehabilitation is indicated with the help of a maxillofacial prosthesis. Orofacial digital syndrome (OFDS) is a congenital anomaly that affects the development of the mouth, face, and digits. Such abnormalities or defects compromise form, function, esthetics, and social acceptance and deeply affect the psychological status of an individual

Mid-to-late-life social network size and resilience to neurodegeneration: The Framingham Heart Study.

BACKGROUND: Social stimulation from having large networks may build cognitive reserve and contribute to cognitive resilience. However, limited research has assessed whether this relationship differs across the adult life course. We examined the relationship between social network size and resilience to neurodegeneration in memory, language, and executive function among mid-to-late-life adults. METHODS: The sample included 1,602 participants from the Framingham Heart Study Offspring cohort who completed the Berkman-Syme Social Network Index (SNI) questionnaire, had available plasma total tau (

Expectations and attributions in social anxiety disorder: diagnostic distinctions and relationship to general anxiety and depression.

Contemporary cognitive models suggest that social anxiety disorder arises from a number of cognitive factors, including tendencies to form pessimistic (rather than optimistic) attributions and expectations for socially-related events. These models also assume that the strengths of such attributions and expectations are more closely linked with social anxiety than with general anxiety or depression. To test these assumptions, a battery of self-report measures was completed by participants with a primary diagnosis of generalized social anxiety disorder (n = 75), panic disorder with agoraphobia (

'HIV ended up in second place' - prioritizing social integration in the shadow of social exclusion: an interview study with migrants living with HIV in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Migrants are overrepresented among people living with HIV in Sweden as they often face conditions that increased their risk and vulnerability for HIV/STI infections prior, during or after migration. Yet, there is limited research on their experiences and perceptions of living with HIV in the Swedish context. This study aims to explore migrants' experiences of living with HIV in Sweden. METHODS: This is a qualitative study based on in-depth interviews with 13 migrants from 11 countries living with HIV in Sweden. Interviews were analysed with thematic analysis using an intersectiona

Depression, stigma and social isolation: the psychosocial trifecta of primary chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus, a cross-sectional and path analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Depression is common in individuals with chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CCLE). However, how CCLE may impact patients' psychological well-being is poorly understood, particularly among disproportionally affected populations. We examined the relationships between depression and psychosocial factors in a cohort of predominantly Black patients with primary CCLE (CCLE without systemic manifestations). METHODS: Cross-sectional assessment of individuals with dermatologist-validated diagnosis of primary CCLE. NIH-PROMIS short-forms were used to measure depression, disease-related s

Cervical pathways for racial disparities in preterm births: the Preterm Prediction Study.

Purpose: Racial disparities in preterm birth have been long recognized, but the social and biological mechanisms for these differences are unclear. Our analysis had three goals: (1) to determine the relation between race and other social risk factors and cervical structure; (2) to determine whether social factors mediate the relation between race and cervical structure; and (3) to determine whether racial disparities in preterm birth (PTB) are mediated through changes in cervical structure observed earlier in pregnancy. Materials and methods: Data from the Maternal Fetal Medicine Unit network

Impact of self-imposed prevention measures and short-term government-imposed social distancing on mitigating and delaying a COVID-19 epidemic: A modelling study.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has spread to nearly every country in the world since it first emerged in China in December 2019. Many countries have implemented social distancing as a measure to "flatten the curve" of the ongoing epidemics. Evaluation of the impact of government-imposed social distancing and of other measures to control further spread of COVID-19 is urgent, especially because of the large societal and economic impact of the former. The aim of this study was to compare the individual and

Social Vulnerability Index and Dental Caries in Children: An Exploratory Study.

OBJECTIVE: This retrospective cross-sectional study evaluated the association between caries outcomes in a pediatric population visiting a dental clinic and the social vulnerability index, an area-based measure capturing 4 main social determinants of health: socioeconomic status, household composition/disability, minority status/language, and housing/transportation. METHODS: The Centers for Disease Control Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) and electronic dental record data of children (0 to 18 y) reporting a caries diagnosis at the Children's Hospital Colorado in 2020 were extracted for 9,201

Psychosocial mediators of racial differences in nighttime blood pressure dipping among normotensive adults.

Shallow declines in nocturnal compared with diurnal blood pressure (BP dipping) have been associated with cardiovascular disease. In U.S. samples, Blacks demonstrate less BP dipping compared with Whites. In a sample of 60 Black and 60 White normotensive adults we examined stress, social integration (including parental status), social support, and hostility as potential mediators of the association between race and BP dipping. The effect of race on diastolic BP dipping was partially mediated by parental status. The effect of race on heart rate dipping was partially mediated by stressful life ev

Characteristics of Coping with Loneliness and the Influence of Living Arrangements Among Older Adults: Findings from a Comparative Qualitative Study.

Loneliness among older adults is a well-known public health issue that became significantly apparent in the post-Covid-19 era. Our qualitative study examined and compared the perspectives of thirty-one older adults toward the factors that intensified or reduced loneliness. Five themes emerged from the analysis: emotional vs. social loneliness; the impact of health conditions on loneliness; the effect of socioeconomic status on loneliness; the role of family links; and the role of social networks . Findings show that effectively reducing loneliness requires a better understanding of how social

The Role of Social Reactions to Disclosures in the Relationship Between Sexual Assault Acknowledgment and Psychological Symptoms.

Following a sexual assault, women experience a host of negative psychological consequences. While some survivors label their sexual assault experience as such (i.e., are acknowledged survivors), other survivors do not. The effect of acknowledgment of sexual assault on postassault outcomes has yielded mixed findings. It was hypothesized that social reactions may account for the relationship between acknowledgment status and psychological symptoms. Results indicated that acknowledged survivors reported more severe posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, which were partially accounted for by turn

Mothers' perceptions of parenting a child with spina bifida.

Mothers of 19 children (mean age = 8.8 years) with spina bifida were interviewed about medical and psychological services available, school placement and restrictions experienced by their children in school and social activities. Mothers also rated their own confidence to care for the child, perceived social support and difficulties experienced by the family. In addition, a measure of the child's disability status was derived. Mothers whose child scored higher in terms of disability reported greater everyday difficulties. In addition, mothers' confidence was related to perceived social support

Housing Status, Medical Care, and Health Outcomes Among People Living With HIV/AIDS: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence suggests responses to HIV that combine individual-level interventions with those that address structural or contextual factors that influence risks and health outcomes of infection. Housing is such a factor. Housing occupies a strategic position as an intermediate structural factor, linking "upstream" economic, social, and cultural determinants to the more immediate physical and social environments in which everyday life is lived. The importance of housing status for HIV prevention and care has been recognized, but much of this attention has focused on homeles

Delineating social phobia.

The natural history--including psychiatric symptoms, precipitating factors, onset and course of illness, and personality characteristics--of 47 social phobics, 80 agoraphobics, and 72 simple phobics was examined. The social phobia group differed from the agoraphobia group by having a lower mean age, fewer females and married members, and a higher educational and occupational status. They were less fearful generally, less obsessive, and less likely to follow a fluctuating or phasic course. There was overlap between the two groups with regard to main phobias, and they were similar with regard to

Self-identified Race and Ethnicity and How this is Perceived: Associations with the Physical and Mental Health of Incarcerated Individuals.

OBJECTIVES: The singular focus on self-identified race and ethnicity in health disparities research may not fully convey the individual and structural components of experiencing race in society, or in a racialized context such as prison. Processes of racialization create boundaries between incarcerated individuals and regulate their daily interactions and access to resources, with possible effects on well-being. However, the relationship between perceived race and health has not been examined within the imprisoned population. DESIGN: We used data from the 2016 Survey of Prison Inmates (n = 23

Socioeconomic impact of Hodgkin lymphoma in adult patients: a systematic literature review.

Hodgkin lymphoma is a highly curable disease with a peak incidence in young adulthood at times where education, family, and social relations are established. We performed a systematic literature review to assess the impact of Hodgkin lymphoma on the socioeconomic status of adolescent and adult survivors (including educational achievements, occupational aspects, marriage, and parenthood). In total, 39 articles were included. Overall, 26-36% of survivors perceived Hodgkin lymphoma as negatively affecting their socioeconomic status. Studies consistently found educational achievements in line with

Correlation Between Quality of Life and Depression Among Persons Suffering from Psoriasis.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic dermatitis is a major sociomedical issue still being marginalized due to generally accepted view that skin diseases are less of a health problem than is the case with diseases of other organs and organ systems for they are not life-threatening. Measurement of quality of life of persons suffering from psoriasis could become an important factor in assessing the success of treatment and modern aspect of integration of the diseased into the planning of therapeutic procedures, monitoring of their outcomes and improving the quality of treatment. AIM: To determine the quality o

Trends in black-white differentials in dietary intakes of U.S. adults, 1971-2002.

BACKGROUND: Disparities in the health status of blacks and whites have persisted despite considerable gains in improved health of the U.S. population. Tracking changes in black-white differentials in dietary attributes over time may help in understanding the contribution of diet to these disparities. METHODS: Data were used from four National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys conducted between 1971 and 2002 for trends in self-reported intakes of energy, macronutrients, micronutrients, fruits and vegetables, and the energy density of foods among U.S. non-Hispanic black (n=7099) and whit

Never-married childless women in Australia: health and social circumstances in older age.

A growing proportion of women reach older age without having married or having children. Assumptions that these older women are lonely, impoverished, and high users of social and health services are based on little evidence. This paper uses data from the Older cohort of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health to describe self-reported demographics, physical and emotional health, and use of services among 10,108 women aged 73-78, of whom 2.7% are never-married and childless. The most striking characteristic of this group is their high levels of education, which are associated with f
