Rhinocerebral mucormycosis due to Rhizopus oryzae in a diabetic patient: a case report.

Mucormycosis is an opportunistic fulminant fungal infection, which affects nose and paranasal sinuses by direct invasion or through the blood vessels mainly in diabetic and immunocompromised patients. In the present study, a rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis in a 24-year-old female with diabetes mellitus as underlying disease was reported. Computed tomography (CT scan) demonstrated an increase in the soft tissue densities in the left nasal cavity, maxillary and ethmoid sinuses and destruction of the antral wall with soft tissue densities in the pterygopalatine fossa and retromaxillary fissure

Ultrasound of the shoulder.

Ultrasonography (US) is a helpful imaging tool in the evaluation of the musculoskeletal system. It has some advantages over the other imaging techniques, such as plain radiography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, represented by the non-invasiveness and multiplanar imaging capability, repeatability, lack of radiation burden, good patient acceptance, and relatively limited costs. US offers an excellent resolution and a possibility for real-time dynamic examination of the joints and surrounding soft tissues, as well as enables monitoring of therapeutic response. The most commo

Imaging of gout: findings and utility.

Imaging is a helpful tool for clinicians to evaluate diseases that induce chronic joint inflammation. Chronic gout is associated with changes in joint structures that may be evaluated with diverse imaging techniques. Plain radiographs show typical changes only in advanced chronic gout. Computed tomography may best evaluate bone changes, whereas magnetic resonance imaging is suitable to evaluate soft tissues, synovial membrane thickness, and inflammatory changes. Ultrasonography is a tool that may be used in the clinical setting, allowing evaluation of cartilage, soft tissues, urate crystal dep

Capturing cases in workers' compensation databases: the example of neck pain.

BACKGROUND: There is a need to more accurately enumerate workers with musculoskeletal injuries who make lost-time claims to workers compensation boards. The objective of this study is to develop an approach to more accurately enumerate these workers. METHODS: Lost-time claims to the Ontario Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB) were reviewed. Using neck pain as an example, nature of injury and part of body codes were identified to classify cases. Claims of a random sample of 434 claimants were reviewed. The proportion of claimants classified as having neck pain was computed. RESULTS: The

Intracranial abscess caused by Rhodococcus equi infection in a foal.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 4-month-old Missouri Fox Trotter colt was examined for a 5-week history of head tilt after treatment for suspected pulmonary Rhodococcus equi infection. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Computed tomography revealed osteolysis of the occipital, temporal, and caudal portion of the parietal bones of the left side of the cranium. A soft tissue mass compressing the occipital region of the cerebral cortex and cerebellum was associated with the osteolytic bone. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: A rostrotentorial-suboccipital craniectomy approach was performed to remove fragmented occipital bone, debulk

Computed tomographic findings in 35 dogs with nasal aspergillosis.

The purpose of this study was to describe the computed tomographic (CT) features of nasal aspergillosis in dogs. Initial (n = 35) and follow-up (n = 12) CT images were available from 35 dogs. The most commonly encountered CT findings were (1) moderate to severe cavitary destruction of the turbinates with presence of a variable amount of abnormal soft tissue in the nasal passages, (2) non-specific thickening of the mucosa adjacent to the inner surface of bones of the frontal sinus, maxillary recess and nasal cavity and, (3) thickened reactive bone. The findings were consistent with a disease in

Radiologic imaging of the carpal tunnel.

Compression neuropathy of the median nerve (carpal tunnel syndrome) is the most common nerve compression syndrome of the extremities. Although the disease is usually diagnosed on the basis of clinical examination and nerve conduction studies, radiologic imaging plays an important role in equivocal cases and especially in the assessment of recurrent or unrelieved symptoms after surgical carpal tunnel release. While plain radiographs and computed tomography are of limited diagnostic value except for the evaluation of osseous carpal stenosis and soft tissue calcifications, high-resolution sonogra

[Imaging of the temporomandibular joint].

A large number of imaging techniques are available nowadays to visualise the temporomandibular joint and surrounding structures. It is important that osseous structures as well as soft tissue can be shown. Transcranial images, conventional tomography, panoramic radiography and computed tomography (CT) are more suitable for viewing the osseous structures. The best techniques to evaluate the soft tissues are arthrography and especially magnetic resonance imaging (MR). The panoramic radiography is the technique of choice in the general practice and provides adequate screening images of the tempor

MRI and CT evaluation of primary bone and soft-tissue tumors.

Twenty-six patients with primary tumors of bone or somatic soft tissues underwent both magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT); 15 of the patients had radionuclide bone scans as well. Only in a minority of cases did these tomographic methods provide information needed for diagnosis that could not be derived from the plain radiographs alone; however, for assessing the extent of the disease, both CT and MRI proved very valuable, particularly MRI. Specifically, MRI was superior to CT in delineating the extent of the neoplasms and their relation to surrounding structures in 2

Plexiform neurofibromatosis of the orbit: CT evaluation.

Seven patients with orbital plexiform neurofibromas (PNFs) were evaluated by computed tomography (CT). These lesions are pathognomonic of von Recklinghausen disease and manifest a spectrum of radiologic abnormalities ranging from thickening of the eyelid and periorbital soft tissues to enlargement of the bony orbit and extensive infiltration of the orbital soft tissues. In analyzing the CT features of orbital PNF, three findings that have not been previously reported were identified. Increased density of the intraconal fat present in four of seven patients was believed to represent PNF involve

A Bifid Eleventh Rib Presenting as a Dorsal Mass in an Infant.

Infantile dorsal masses arise from a wide range of congenital, inflammatory, and neoplastic conditions, and accurate diagnosis often depends on imaging. We report a 10-month-old boy who presented with a palpable left dorsal mass that was ultimately diagnosed as an isolated bifid 11th rib. Routine chest radiographs were inconclusive, whereas ultrasonography suggested an osseous lesion, an oblique rib radiograph localized the abnormality to the 11th rib, and three-dimensional computed tomography clearly demonstrated the bifid morphology. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) excluded an associated so

Asymptomatic gangrenous cholecystitis diagnosed using contrast-enhanced ultrasonography in a patient with pancreatic cancer.

A 72-year-old female without abdominal symptoms visited our hospital for routine follow-up while undergoing pancreatic cancer treatment (using TS-1). Her vital signs were normal, and her abdomen was soft and non-tender. Blood test revealed elevated C-reactive protein levels with normal white blood cell count. Computed tomography was performed for follow-up of pancreatic cancer. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed partial discontinuity and irregular thickness of the gallbladder wall; however, a definitive diagnosis was not obtained due to unclear imaging. Contrast-enhanced transabdomin

MRI and CT features of a malignant myoepithelioma of the scrotum: A case report and literature review.

Malignant myoepithelioma of the scrotum is extremely rare. We report the case of a 51-year-old man with malignant myoepithelioma of the scrotum, wherein computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a lobulated soft tissue mass with calcification, cystic component, and solid component with gradual contrast enhancement on dynamic contrast-enhanced scans. The patient presented with scrotal induration, and there was no elevation of tumor markers and no evidence of a metastatic lesion on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Histopathological examination of the resected

Anatomical placement of the human eyeball in the orbit--validation using CT scans of living adults and prediction for facial approximation.

Accuracy of forensic facial approximation and superimposition techniques relies on the knowledge of anatomical correlations between soft and hard tissues. Recent studies by Stephan and collaborators (6,8,10) reviewed traditional guidelines leading to a wrong placement of the eyeball in the orbit. As those statements are based on a small cadaver sample, we propose a validation of these findings on a large database (n = 375) of living people. Computed tomography scans of known age and sex subjects were used to collect landmarks on three-dimensional surfaces and DICOM with TIVMI. Results confirme

[Visualization of laryngopharynx during swallowing of negative contrast media (air) with cine mode 64-row MDCT].

Video fluoroscopic examination of swallowing generally needs a contrast media such as a barium sulfate. Since the examination is usually performed in patients with dysphasia, there is a risk of aspiration. We tried to visualize the laryngopharynx during swallowing of negative contrast media (air) with 64-row multi-detector computed tomography (64-MDCT). Cine mode 64-MDCT was performed to visualize the laryngopharynx in 4 healthy volunteers during swallowing of negative contrast media (air). The data were converted to three-dimensional (3D) images of 2 conditions (air and bone) and sagittal ima

Orbital meningoencephalocele manifesting as a conjunctival mass.

Orbital meningoencephalocele is a rare congenital abnormality caused by a defect of the cranio-orbital bones that usually manifests soon after birth as a soft, cystic fullness in the superomedial canthal area with associated exophthalmos. We managed an unusual case of congenital orbital meningoencephalocele that manifested as a cystic conjunctival mass without proptosis or periorbital changes. Preoperative computed tomographic scans failed to demonstrate a bone defect. After suture ligature of the posterior stalk, excision of the lesion yielded an ependymal cyst surrounded by neuroglial and me

The spread of oesophageal cancer: an evaluation of clinical, barium and computed tomography assessments.

One hundred and three patients with proven oesophageal cancer were evaluated prospectively by clinical examination, upper gastro-intestinal barium studies and computed tomography (CT). The accuracy of each method in assessing the extent of disease was determined by correlation with findings at bronchoscopy (100 patients), thoracotomy (26 patients) and laparotomy (63 patients). The results indicated that CT will accurately demonstrate mass invasion of cancer into mediastinal structures. But the absence of fat-planes on CT is the least reliable indication of spread into peri-oesophageal soft tis

Correlation of Vocal Intensity with Velopharyngeal Closing Mechanism in Individuals with and without Complaint of Velopharyngeal Dysfunction.

Introduction Velopharyngeal sphincter is a portion of the muscle of the palatopharyngeal arch that is capable of separating the oral cavity from the nasal cavity. It has not been determined yet whether voice intensity has an influence on this capacity. Velopharyngeal sphincter closure is accomplished by elevating and retracting the soft palate at the same time as the nasopharyngeal walls are constricted. Objective This study aims to correlate voice intensity with velopharyngeal sphincter closure in individuals without velopharyngeal dysfunction and patients with cleft lip and palate. Methods W

The Use of Imaging Techniques in Chronic Kidney Disease-Mineral and Bone Disorders (CKD-MBD)-A Systematic Review.

Although frequently silent, mineral and bone disease (MBD) is one of the most precocious complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and is omnipresent in patients with CKD stage 5. Its pathophysiology is complex, but basically, disturbances in vitamin D, phosphate, and calcium metabolism lead to a diverse range of clinical manifestations with secondary hyperparathyroidism usually being the most frequent. With the decline in renal function, CKD-MBD may induce microstructural changes in bone, vascular system and soft tissues, which results in macrostructural lesions, such as low bone mineral d

Myeloid sarcoma of the posterior mediastinum mimicking lymphoma: Potential role of dual-energy CT.

Myeloid sarcoma is a rare extramedullary malignant tumor composed of immature myeloid cells and is frequently associated with acute myeloid leukemia. Isolated mediastinal involvement is exceedingly uncommon and often poses a significant diagnostic challenge because of nonspecific clinical and imaging features, frequently leading to misdiagnosis as lymphoma. We report posterior mediastinal myeloid sarcoma in a 39-year-old man who presented with back pain and chest discomfort. Conventional contrast-enhanced computed tomography demonstrated a homogeneous posterior mediastinal soft-tissue mass enc
