The fate of organic herbicides applied to agricultural fields may be affected by other soil amendments, such as copper applied as a fungicide. The effect of copper on the leaching of diuron and glyphosate through a granitic and a calcareous soil was studied in the laboratory using sieved-soil columns. Each soil was enriched with copper sulfate to obtain soil copper concentrations of 125, 250, 500, and 1000 mg kg(-1). Glyphosate leaching was influenced by soil pH and copper concentration, whereas diuron leaching was not. In the calcareous soil, glyphosate leaching decreased as copper levels inc…

The effects of aging on the extractability of naphthalene and phenanthrene were investigated using laboratory batch assays. Experiments have been conducted with three soil matrices: a silty clay and two soils with different organic contents. Aging was conducted under abiotic conditions in water saturated and nonsaturated conditions, under a constant temperature (20 degrees C). The mobility of sorbed contaminants was evaluated through successive extractions in water, methanol, butanol and dichloromethane. Experimental results showed a reduction of the extractability of both naphthalene and phen…

This work investigated the degradation and detoxification of acetochlor in a soil amended with an organic fertilizer or sodium thiosulfate (STS). Over an incubation period of 28 d, the residual acetochlor was measured, soil dehydrogenase activity was determined, and major degradates were identified. Results show that high-concentration acetochlor was persistent in the soil, as indicated by the depression in soil dehydrogenase activity. When the soil was amended with the organic fertilizer, the soil dehydrogenase activity was stimulated by supplemented nutrients, which resulted in a higher degr…

The influence of the use of antibiotics on the prevalence of resistance genes in the environment is still poorly understood. We studied the diversity of tetracycline and sulfonamide resistance genes as influenced by fertilization with pig manure in soil microcosms and at two field locations. Manure contained a high diversity of resistance genes, regardless of whether it stemmed from a farm operation with low or regular use of antibiotics. In the microcosm soils, the influence of fertilization with manure was clearly shown by an increase in the number of resistance genes in the soil after manur…

A study was conducted to determine the adsorption/desorption of butachlor, myclobutanil and chlorpyrifos on five soils using a batch equilibration technique and to study the relationship between bioavailability to Allolobophora caliginosa and the adsorption/desorption of these three pesticides. The results showed that the adsorption/desorption processes of the tested compounds were mainly controlled by soil organic matter content (OM) and octanol/water-partitioning coefficient (K(ow)), and that the bioavailability of the pesticides was dependent on characteristics of pesticides, properties of …

This study presents the design, monitoring and remediation strategy for a soil vapor extraction (SVE) system installed at an industrial site contaminated with a mixture of organic compounds, in particular 1,2 dichloroethane, carbon tetrachloride and chloroform. The unsaturated zone at the site is very deep and presents near ideal conditions for SVE, with the contaminated portion of the porous media characterized by alluvial deposits of a well graded sand followed by a capillary barrier at 28m of depth, which limited DNAPL downward migration. The soil cleanup time and the optimal removal rates …

A Hg-contaminated site in B.C. Province, Canada was caused by the previous operation of Hg-cell in chlor-alkali process for over 25 years. The soils and groundwater at the site are highly contaminated with mercury. An analysis of groundwater at the site has shown that most of the mercury is bonded with humic and fulvic acids (HFA) in colloidal form. The Hg-HFA colloids can be completely removed from the groundwater with ferric chloride treatment under optimized process conditions to form ferric sludge (FS), which is rendered non-leachable by standard TCLP (Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Proc…

The main penetration route of cryptosporidia oocysts (at the infective stage) from animal carriers in the natural ecosystems of the forest zone into the environment of human habitat has been newly established. Oocysts excreted with feces are concentrated in the surface layer of the soil, then washed into water reservoirs. The viability of oocyts from the soil and the silt of river sand banks and shallows has been experimentally shown. As a result, the natural foci of cryptosporidiosis have been found to play an important role in the supply of infective agents to rivers serving as sources of wa…

In the carbonate soils contaminated by a toxic spill from a pyrite mine (Aznalcóllar, southern Spain), a study was made of a thin layer (thickness = 4 mm) of polluted soil located between the pyrite tailings and the underlying soil. This layer, reddish-yellow in color due to a high Fe content, formed when sulfates (from the oxidation of sulfides) infiltrated the soil, causing acidification (to pH 5.6 as opposed to 8.0 of unaffected soil) and pollution (in Zn, Cu, As, Pb, Co, Cd, Sb, Bi, Tl, and In). The less mobile elements (As, Bi, In, Pb, Sb, and Tl) concentrated in the uppermost part of the…

Distillery effluent, a rich source of potassium, is used for irrigation at many places in the world. A laboratory experiment was conducted to study the influence of potassium salts present in post-methanation distillery effluent (PME) along with two other salts, KCl and K2SO4, on mineralization of carbon in soil. PME oxidized with H2O2, raw PME, KCl and K2SO4 solutions containing K equivalent to 10%, 20%, 40% and 100% of K present in PME were added to the soil separately, maintaining four replications for each treatment and control. Addition of salts up to a certain concentration stimulated C …

Determining mobility and availability of metals in sewage sludge amended soil is an environmental concern. Potential leachability and bioavailability of metals following sludge applied to agricultural soil was evaluated. Geochemical forms of metal occurring in sludge-amended soil were subjected to fractionation for understanding heavy metal transformation and remobilization in sludge-amended soil. Metal leachability was determined using reconstructed soil profiles where dewatered sewage sludge was incorporated into the surface 0-10 cm of soil. Two-sludge application rates; 150 and 300 kgN/ha, …

Biodegradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) by toluene-degrading bacteria was measured under aerobic conditions in aqueous and soil-slurry batch microcosms. For soil-phase experiments, a freshly contaminated soil and a soil containing only the desorption-resistant fraction of TCE were tested. In both cases, presence of soil resulted in biodegradation rates substantially lower than those determined in the absence of soil. In aqueous-phase experiments, an appreciable increase in the rate and extent of TCE biodegradation was observed in microcosms when toluene was added multiple times. The TCE degr…

Toxocariasis is a cosmopolitan infection of dogs and cats. Humans (mainly children) become infected by accidentally ingesting embryonated eggs from the environment. The studies were conducted on the role of dogs in the epidemiology of human toxocariasis. A total of 112 soil samples and 110 fecal samples were collected from the same public places in Poznań, including backyards in the centre of the city, playgrounds and public squares grounds. Of these soil samples, 6.3 % were positive for Toxocara spp., 1.8 % for Trichuris vulpis. Fecal examination revealed that 0.9 % samples were positive for …

Diarrhoea and soiling of the breech with faeces ('winter scours') is a serious problem in adult Merino sheep grazing improved pastures in south-eastern Australia during winter and spring. This occurs even on farms where gastro-intestinal nematodes are effectively controlled. It was shown that winter scours was associated with the ingestion of trichostrongylid larvae, and that host factors were important in determining susceptibility to this syndrome. No differences were detected in the protective immune response of affected and unaffected sheep to gut nematodes. However, affected sheep had a h…

The mineralization of [7-14 C]benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) in soil was investigated in response to additions of individual hydrocarbons, defined hydrocarbon mixtures, crude oil, and crude oil fractions. Neither substantial BaP mineralization nor enrichment of BaP degraders occurred in BaP-spiked soil in the absence of a suitable hydrocarbon supplement. Crude oil, the saturated and aromatic class components of crude oil, the distillates heating oil, jet fuel, and diesel fuel supported up to 60% mineralization of 80 μg [7-14 C]BaP per gram of soil in 40 d. Neither single hydrocarbons nor defined hydroca…

The acetonitrile-sonication extraction method (US EPA Method 8330) associated with aquatic-based toxicity tests was examined to study the ecotoxicity of energetic substances in soil. Three studies were carried out: (1) toxicological characterization of different energetic substances to select a representative toxicant and to validate the choice of bioassays; (2) choice of an appropriate solvent to transfer acetonitrile extracts to the bioassay incubation media; and (3) optimization of Method 8330 using soil samples spiked with the toxicant. Initial studies indicated that pure 2,4,6-trinitrotol…

On the basis of discussion and analysis during and following an ATSDR science panel on the bioavailability of mercury in soils, it is apparent that the default assumption of 100% relative bioavailability for mercury-contaminated soils is excessively conservative. However, current knowledge does not allow the development of default assumptions or guidelines for determining relative bioavailability of mercury in soils. Until such default assumptions or guidelines can be developed, site-specific assays of bioavailability, preferably using either animal bioassays or validated in vitro techniques, …

The risks associated with environmental exposures to inorganic mercury are typically assessed based on toxicity studies conducted with the soluble salt, mercuric chloride (HgCl2). Evidence indicates, however, that inorganic mercury is present in soil as a variety of compounds and that oral absorption of inorganic mercury decreases with a decrease in the solubility of the mercury compound being studied. Thus, while HgCl2 is approximately 15-20% bioavailable, the bioavailability of cinnabar (HgS) may be 30- to 60-fold less. The solubility and, hence, bioavailability of inorganic mercury in soil …
