A method has been developed for the determination of tetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC), chlortetracycline (CTC) and doxycycline (DC) in animal tissues. Tissues were macerated with a buffer solution and centrifuged. The supernatant solution was purified over a Sep-Pak C18 cartridge which had previously been deactivated by silylation. Tetracyclines were eluted with methanol, the solvent evaporated and the residue dissolved in the HPLC mobile phase. A radioimmunoassay (RIA) procedure for the determination of sulforidazine in human plasma was developed using an antiserum raised in rabbits immunized with N-(2-carboxyethyl)desmethylsulforidazine-porcine thyroglobulin conjugate. The physicochemical properties of select opioid and anilinopiperidine narcotic analgesics were investigated. The solubilities of the narcotics in hexane and water and, for morphine, in other organic solvents were determined. Regular solution theory seems to be applicable to the solubility behavior of morphine in solvents that lack strong dipoles and hydrogen bonds. A reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic assay for the simultaneous determination of cefotaxime and its metabolite desacetylcefotaxime in plasma and urine was developed. As a result of using a variety of assay techniques, rather different values for the rate of the pyruvate kinase (PK) reaction were obtained. The action of barbituric acid derivatives--phenobarbital, sodium ethaminal and sodium amytal--on the physico-chemical properties of mucleic acids was studied. It is shown that as compared to sodium ethaminal and sodium amytal phenobarbital exerts a more potent action on the secondary and tertiary structure of native DNA molecules.

A new semiorganic nonlinear optical bis (thiourea) cadmium zinc chloride (BTCZC) crystal has been synthesized. BTCZC single crystals were grown from aqueous solution by slow evaporation technique. Lower vertebrates can detect UV light with the pineal complex independently of eyes. Electrophysiological studies, together with chromophore extraction analysis, have suggested that the underlying pigment in the lamprey pineal exhibits a bistable nature, that is, reversible photoreaction by UV and visible light, which is never achieved by known UV pigments.
