The purpose of this study was to describe the relative frequency, pattern, and mechanism of surfing injuries. Descriptive data of surfing injuries was collected by using a Web site-based interactive multiple choice survey. Data was collected from May 1998 to August 1999. Completed surveys were obtained from 1,348 individuals reporting 1,237 acute injuries and 477 chronic injuries. Lacerations accounted for 42% of all acute injuries, contusions 13%, sprains/strains 12%, and fractures 8%. Thirty-seven percent of acute injuries were to the lower extremity, and 37% to the head and neck. Fifty-five

A prospective study of injuries encountered during participation in a summer soccer camp for youths aged 6 through 17 years revealed an injury incidence of 10.6 per 1000 hours for girls (107 injuries in 458 girls) and 7.3 per 1000 hours for boys (109 injuries in 681 boys). For both sexes, the incidence of injury increased at age 14 years. One certified athletic trainer (W.D.C.) assessed and documented all injuries during the course of the study. Seventy percent of injuries involved the lower extremities. Contusions represented 35.2%, strains 27.8%, sprains 19.4%, and fractures and dislocations

Medically impairing injuries among medical personnel (n = 209) were analyzed based on data obtained from the Work-Related No-Fault Liability Insurance's (TFA) injury registration system. Almost half (98; 47%) were injured during patient care, of which 29 were injured as a result of physical trauma inflicted by the patient. When moving themselves between the homes of the patients and between different wards, 94 (45%) were injured (18 in vehicle crashes). The injuries most often resulting in medical impairment were sprains and/or strains (101; 48%) and fractures (67; 32%). The injuries primarily

All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are an ongoing source of orthopaedic trauma in the United States. The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) database was queried for ATV-related extremity trauma from 2010 to 2019. An estimated 31,979 ATV-related injuries present to emergency departments annually without significant variability between years. Patients were predominantly white (63.5%), male (72.2%), and aged 18 - 44 (49.9%). Injury sites frequently included the shoulder (24%), wrist (12.8%), and ankle (11.2%). Fractures were most common followed by strains and sprains. Only 15.5% of

To determine whether elite collegiate athletes with a prior hamstring strain injury (HSI) display persistent deficits in hamstring muscle morphology and muscle-tendon unit (MTU) mechanics during sprinting, and whether MRI-informed, subject-specific musculoskeletal models detect limb differences that scaled-generic models overlook. This study analyzed data from the Hamstring Injury (HAMIR) study. Seventy-nine NCAA Division I male football players (106 previously injured vs. 52 uninjured control limbs) completed maximal-velocity over-ground sprints instrumented with inertial measurement units (1

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate trends, costs, and predictors of high-cost ankle sprain claims in the workers' compensation system.
METHODS: Among 26,773 ankle injury claims (2016-2024), 18,991 sprains were identified and analyzed using descriptive and analytical multivariate methods.
RESULTS: Sprains comprised about 70% of all ankle injuries, with increasing proportions among medical-only claims during the 9 years. Litigation, some comorbidities (diabetes and thyroid conditions), and coexisting injuries were strongly associated with high-cost claims (≥$50,000). Sprains without coexisting injuries r

Traditional kinesiology tape (KT) is an elastic fabric tape that clinicians and sports trainers widely use for managing ankle sprains. However, inadequate mechanical properties, adhesive strength, water resistance, and micro-damage generation could affect the longevity of the tape on the skin during physical activity and sweating. Therefore, autonomous room-temperature self-healing elastomers with robust mechanical properties and adequate adhesion to the skin are highly desirable to replace traditional KT. Ionic aggregates were introduced into the polymer matrix via electrostatic attraction be

Although platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been widely used regardless of the severity of muscle strain, there have been very few basic studies in which its effects on muscle injury were examined by using models that accurately mimic the clinical muscle strain injury process. Therefore, the aim of this study was to confirm by physiological and structural analyses whether PRP purified by a general preparation method has a muscle healing effect on muscle damage caused by eccentric contraction (ECC). Male Wistar rats were subjected to muscle injury induced by ECC in bilateral plantar flexor muscles

Cervical spine (c-spine) injuries are a common injury during automobile crashes. The objective of this study is to verify an existing head-neck (HN) finite element model with military volunteer frontal impact kinematics by varying the muscle activation scheme from previous literature. Proper muscle activation will allow for accurate percent elongation (strain) of the c-spine ligaments and will serve to establish ligamentous response during non-injury frontal impacts. Previous human research volunteer (HRV) frontal impact sled tests reported kinematic data that served as the input for HN model

The knee is a joint that is often injured in sport, with a large and increasing number of ligament tears and repairs; postoperative complications can lead to poor outcome, such as stiffness. Beyond the well-known and well-described intra- and extra-articular causes of postoperative stiffness, the present study introduces the concept of a central reflex motor inhibition mechanism called arthrogenic muscle inhibition (AMI). AMI occurs after trauma and can be defined as active knee extension deficit due to central impairment of Vastus Medialis Obliquus (VMO) contraction, often associated with spi

BACKGROUND: Tibiofibular syndesmosis (TFS) widening sometimes is not evident on radiography but can be found under arthroscopy in chronic lateral ankle instability (CLAI). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of TFS widening severity on clinical outcomes and return to activities after isolated Broström operation in CLAI patients and to propose an indication for its surgical intervention.
METHODS: A total of 118 CLAI patients undergoing diagnostic ankle arthroscopy and open Broström-Gould operation were included. Based on the middle width of TFS measured under arthroscopy, patients were div

Lateral ankle sprains are a common musculoskeletal injury. The anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) is the primary ligament involved and is assessed via an anterior drawer test. Clinically assessing joint laxity has been a subjective task. Evaluating both magnitude of translation and quality of the endfeel has presented challenges. Until recently, a reliable and valid arthrometer to test joints other than the knee has not been available. The Mobil-Aider arthrometer has undergone bench testing for validity, reliability testing in healthy persons, and most recently the testing of participants fo

Prion diseases are transmissible, fatal neurologic diseases that include Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) in humans, chronic wasting disease (CWD) in cervids, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle and scrapie in sheep. Prions are extremely difficult to inactivate and established methods to reduce prion infectivity are often dangerous, caustic, expensive, or impractical. Identifying viable and safe methods for treating prion contaminated materials is important for hospitals, research facilities, biologists, hunters, and meat-processors. For three decades, some prion researchers have u

INTRODUCTION: Collateral ligament sprains of the metacarpophalangeal joint (MP) of the long fingers are rare and mostly treated conservatively. Clinical examination to diagnose the severity of these injuries is mandatory. The purpose of our study is to report the results of 15 patients treated surgically.
METHODS: Twenty-three patients, mean age 48, underwent surgery for Stage 3 radial collateral ligament (RCL) injuries of the middle finger (12), the ring finger (4) and the little finger (7). The mean time from trauma to surgery was 53 days. The clinical evaluation consisted of measuring acti
