Strabismus at Age 2 Years in Children Born Before 28 Weeks' Gestation: Antecedents and Correlates.

Children born very preterm are at greater risk of ophthalmic morbidities, including strabismus, than children born at term. We evaluated perinatal factors associated with strabismus at age 2 years in a large population of infants delivered before 28 weeks' gestation. A total of 996 infants in the multicenter ELGAN (Extremely Low Gestational Age Newborn) study who had a retinal exam in infancy and a developmental assessment at 2 years corrected age are included. Their mothers were interviewed about the pregnancy, and both mother and newborn charts were reviewed. Certified examiners administered…

Bilateral orbital preseptal cellulitis after combined adenotonsillectomy and strabismus surgery--case report and pathogenetic hypothesis.

The first case of bilateral orbital preseptal cellulitis complicating combined adenotonsillectomy and strabismus surgery is reported. The issues of antimicrobial prophylaxis are discussed. The authors speculate about the possible routes of surgical site infection. Transient bacteraemia secondary to adenotonsillectomy may be theoretically a source of distant surgical site infection to the orbit, raising the issue of distant surgical site contamination during multidisciplinary surgery. Combined adenotonsillectomy and eye surgery might benefit from prophylactic systemic antibiotic administration.

Risk factors influencing the outcome of strabismus surgery following retinal detachment surgery with scleral buckle.

PURPOSE: To determine factors associated with surgical success in patients undergoing strabismus surgery after retinal detachment repair with scleral buckle. METHODS: The medical records of consecutive patients who underwent strabismus surgery after repair of retinal detachment with scleral buckle were retrospectively reviewed. A successful "motor" outcome was defined as horizontal deviation <10(Δ) and vertical deviation <4(Δ) in the primary position; successful "sensory" outcome was no diplopia in the primary position. Various factors such as removing the scleral buckle at the time of strabi…

Relative afferent pupillary defect with normal vision and vertical strabismus--implications for pupillary pathway anatomy.

BACKGROUND: A relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD) is usually a sign of visual dysfunction. Here, an unusual case of an RAPD combined with vertical strabismus but normal vision is described. Implications for pupillary pathway anatomy are discussed. METHODS: A 12-year-old girl with chronic headache was shown to have a midbrain tumour. She presented to us with intermittent diplopia. Examination included visual acuity, visual fields, pupillary function, anterior and posterior segments, and strabismus evaluation with the tangent screen. RESULTS: There was a right-sided pathologic RAPD but n…

Large-scale GWAS of strabismus identifies risk loci and provides support for a link with maternal smoking.

Strabismus is a common pediatric eye misalignment and has complex genetic and environmental causes. Previous genome-wide association studies (GWAS) encountered difficulties in identifying strabismus risk variants due to heterogeneity and small samples. We performed large meta-analyses of 11 European-ancestry GWAS (7 sources), analysing broad strabismus (20,464 cases, 954,921 controls) and subtypes (esotropia/exotropia). We discovered 4 loci (e.g., NPLOC4-TSPAN10-PDE6G-FAAP100, COL6A1) for strabismus and 5 additional loci (e.g., CHRNA4, MAD1L1) for strabismus subtypes and we successfully replic…
