Reactions to Trauma Over Time: Trajectories of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms in Survivors of Violent Crime.

Although experiencing crime is a common source of trauma, it remains unclear how the impact of violent crime translates into trajectories of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms following treatment. The purpose of the present study was to identify the proportion of survivors of violent crime whose PTSD symptoms remained clinically significant over time and assess their characteristics to inform treatment. The first objective of this study was to determine the trajectories of PTSD symptoms in survivors of violent crime. The second objective was to assess the demographic, trauma-relate

Colors of the mind: a meta-analysis of creative arts therapy as an approach for post-traumatic stress disorder intervention.

BACKGROUND: In clinical practice, creative arts therapy is frequently utilized for the treatment of traumatized adults, with reports of favorable outcomes. However, the effectiveness of this intervention in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment has not yet been definitively established through meta-analysis. In this meta-analysis, we aim to assess the effectiveness of creative arts therapy in the management of PTSD. METHODS: We conducted systematic literature searches through electronic databases from the extended inception of each database to November 2023. We utilized the Cochrane

Veterans' experiences of somatic experiencing and prolonged exposure therapies for post-traumatic stress disorder: A qualitative analysis.

PURPOSE: Despite the proliferation of research into evidence based treatment for military PTSD there is little evidence for treatment assignment criterion and military based PTSD still demonstrates low remission rates. METHOD: Thirty participants in a randomized control trial comparing Prolonged Exposure (PE) and Somatic Experiencing (SE) were interviewed on their experiences in therapy and their responses assessed using a descriptive phenomenological analysis approach to delineate the central tenets of the two therapeutic approaches. RESULTS: Results indicated that participants from both th

Identifying ICU survivors and relatives with post-traumatic stress disorder using text mining: An explorative study.

PURPOSE: A quarter of ICU-patients develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after discharge. These patients could benefit from early detection of PTSD. Therefore, we explored the accuracy of text mining with self-narratives to identify intensive care unit (ICU) patients and surviving relatives at risk of PTSD in a pilot study. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study with self-administered questionnaires, discharged ICU-patients and surviving relatives participated. In a single centre study at a 32-bed ICU of a large teaching hospital, we used an online screening tool with self-narrativ

Circulating biomarkers and neuroanatomical brain structures differ in older adults with and without post-traumatic stress disorder.

The aim of this study was to advance post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) understanding in older adults (48-77 years) by determining if circulating cytokines (IL-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-12p70, IL17A and TNFα), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF-A) and neuroanatomical brain volumes (grey and white matter, hippocampus, and amygdala) significantly differed in those with versus without PTSD. While none of the tested cytokines showed a significant difference, serum BDNF and VEGF-A levels were found to be significantly higher in the PTSD cohort. The

Psychological Factors and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Risk in Stroke Survivors: A Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: As of 2023, stroke is the second leading cause of death and the third leading cause of death and disability globally, with an expected rise by 2030. While traditional risk factors like demographics, smoking, inactivity, diabetes, and hypertension are well-known, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) remains under-studied despite its 13% incidence rate and link to stroke risk. METHODS: This cross-sectional study, conducted from 1st November, 2023 to 30th January, 2024 in Doanhung, Phutho Province, involved stroke patients over 18 years old diagnosed within the past year. A 56-que

Post-traumatic stress disorder, resilience and cancer-related fatigue in breast cancer: A moderated network analysis.

PURPOSE: Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a prevalent and debilitating symptom among breast cancer survivors, often co-occurring with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Psychological resilience may attenuate this association, but the mechanisms and symptom-level dynamics remain unclear. METHODS: In a cross-sectional analysis of 285 breast cancer survivors, validated self-report measures of PTSD symptoms, resilience, and CRF were completed. We applied moderated network analysis to map item-level interrelations, followed by Johnson-Neyman probing of significant moderation pathways. Finally,

Identifying molecular signatures of post-traumatic stress disorder vulnerability and progression in a longitudinal study: a study protocol.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a highly debilitating psychiatric disorder, which develops in a subset of trauma-exposed individuals. Patients with PTSD fail to extinguish fear responses to no-longer dangerous stimuli and develop enduring experiences of fear and anxiety. To advance the understanding of PTSD neurobiology, longitudinal and comprehensive clinical and molecular data are needed. Here we present the protocol of the project "Reli€ving-PTSD" aiming at identifying the molecular signatures of PTSD vulnerability and disease progression in a longitudinal study in humans. The mole

The glutaminase inhibitor JHU-083 mitigates cognitive dysfunction in a mouse model of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by symptoms including re-experiencing, avoidance, hyperarousal, and negative alterations in cognition and mood as defined by DSM-5. It is frequently accompanied by comorbid conditions such as anxiety, depression, and cognitive impairments, which are primarily attributed to abnormal hippocampal neuronal damage and impaired synaptic plasticity. Glutaminase (GLS), a key enzyme in the synthesis of glutamate within the brain, plays a role in regulating neurodevelopment and synaptic excitability. However, the impact of GLS inhibition on neuronal

Veterans Training Service Dogs for Other Veterans: An Animal-Assisted Intervention for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Research on the post-deployment reintegration needs of women veterans is limited. Non-traditional support may enhance mental health. Relationships with animals and volunteering may aid those with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Using the biopsychosocial model, we examined whether participation in an 8-week service dog training program (SDTP) affected telomere length (TL), heart rate variability (HRV), PTSD symptom severity, perceived stress, and anxiety in female veterans with PTSD, as well as whether combat exposure influenced these relationships. Female veterans (ages 32-72, M = 45.9,

Schizandrin ameliorates post-traumatic stress disorder-like behaviors via 5-HT1A receptor in mice.

Although selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are the primary treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), they do not address all aspects of PTSD, highlighting the need for new therapies. Schizandrin, a lignan compound found in Schisandra chinensis, alleviates cognitive dysfunction, depression-like behaviors, and anxiety, suggesting that it may ameliorate PTSD symptoms. However, to date, no studies have explored the effects of schizandrin on PTSD symptoms. In the present study, we investigated whether schizandrin alleviates PTSD-like symptoms and explored its mechanism of action. W
