Strongyloides stercoralis is a nematode helminth endemic to tropical and subtropical regions. Strongyloidiasis can manifest with varied clinical symptoms, predominantly gastrointestinal. Duodenal obstruction is an uncommon manifestation. We report such a patient with underlying Human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) infection.

Risk factors for LTBI and strongyloidiasis were analysed using Poisson regression with robust variance. Among 406 eligible patients, 24/353 (6.8%) had LTBI, 8/368 (2.2%) were positive for Strongyloides stercoralis infection, 1/32 (3.1%) was positive for Entamoeba histolytica and 1/299 (0.3%) …

BACKGROUND: Strongyloidiasis can be fatal in immunocompromised patients, but few epidemiological studies investigated the burden of this neglected tropical disease among these populations, particularly in low- and middle-income countries such as Bolivia. This study aimed to fill in this gap by estimating prevalence rate and risk factors associated with strongyloidiasis among patients at high risk of complications.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out in Santa Cruz (elevation 400 meters, tropical climate) and Cochabamba (elevation 2,500 meters, temperate climate), among patients wi…

BACKGROUND: Foreign-born, HIV-infected persons are at risk for sub-clinical parasitic infections acquired in their countries of origin. The long-term consequences of co-infections can be severe, yet few data exist on parasitic infection prevalence in this population.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: This cross-sectional study evaluated 128 foreign-born persons at one HIV clinic. We performed stool studies and serologic testing for strongyloidiasis, schistosomiasis, filarial infection, and Chagas disease based on the patient's country of birth. Eosinophilia and symptoms were examined as predict…

Strongyloidiasis and leptospirosis are neglected tropical diseases that have affected many countries across the world. In this study, we evaluated the seroprevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis among patients with leptospirosis in northern Iran. We evaluated 156 laboratory- or clinically confirmed leptospirosis cases. The overall seroprevalence of S. stercoralis was 32.0% (95% confidence interval (CI): 27.4-36.5%, 50/156). Seropositivity was significantly associated with agricultural activities (odds ratio (OR): 2.84, 95% CI: 1.0-8.77) and gastrointestinal disorders (OR: 2.4, 95% CI: 1.1-4.9)…

Strongyloides stercoralis infection is being increasingly diagnosed out of endemic areas. The aim of this study is to evaluate the usefulness of S. stercoralis serology for the management of probable strongyloidiasis in patients presenting with eosinophilia. Overall, 147 patients were included, 89 (60.5%) patients had a positive S. stercoralis serology. Strongyloides stercoralis larvae were detected only in 15 (10.2%) patients. Twenty-eight patients had human immunodeficiency virus infection. Eighty patients received ivermectin 200 mcg/Kg/day for 2 days, and follow-up 6 months after treatment …

Strongyloides stercoralis can affect humans in the form of asymptomatic infections, Strongyloidal hyperinfection syndrome and disseminated Strongyloidiasis depending on the immune response of the host. We report a case of strongyloidial hyperinfection syndrome that subsequently tested positive for HTLV infection.

One case of a secondary amyloidosis in amebiasis with intrathoracic complications of amebic liver abscesses in association with strongyloidiasis, enterobiasis, bancroftian filariasis and maduromycosis is described. It's suggested that the progression of secondary amyloidosis was due to the prolonged process of amebiasis in association with helminthiasis and mycosis.

We report a case of a fatal Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection syndrome (SHS) in a migrant from Kenya, who had been living in Germany for three decades. A short-course oral steroid treatment for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) exacerbation had been administered four weeks prior to the presentation. The initial clinical and radiological findings suggested a mechanical small bowel obstruction as a cause of ileus. Our case highlights the importance of maintaining a high index of suspicion for strongyloidiasis in patients from endemic areas even years after they left the country…

Peripheral eosinophilia (>0.5×109/L) in the full blood count is caused by a variety of infectious and non-infectious aetiologies. Of particular importance to the UK military are parasitic infections, especially in individuals recruited from overseas and those who have deployed to areas that are highly endemic for schistosomiasis, strongyloidiasis and soil-transmitted helminths. These infections may persist for decades without causing symptoms. UK Armed Forces (UKAF) personnel have recently presented with more severe forms of strongyloidiasis, which can be fatal, especially following immunosupp…

We report a 45-year-old man with granulocytic sarcoma who, following anticancer chemotherapy, developed florid strongyloidiasis, wherein eggs of Strongyloides stercoralis embedded in the exfoliated mucosa were seen in the stools. The eggs were interspersed with numerous rhabditiform larvae. He was treated with albendazole.

Strongyloidiasis is a parasitic disease that may progress to a disseminated form, called hyperinfection syndrome, in patients with immunosuppression. The hyperinfection syndrome is caused by the wide multiplication and migration of infective larvae, with characteristic gastrointestinal and/or pulmonary involvement. This disease may pose a diagnostic challenge, as it presents with nonspecific findings on endoscopy.

Strongyloidiasis in immunosuppressed patients often requires prolonged administration of the antihelminthic, thiabendazole. The case described herein represents the first report of theophylline toxicity induced by concurrent administration of thiabendazole. Preliminary studies suggest that interference with theophylline clearance by thiabendazole may be the mechanism involved in this drug interaction.

120 patients attending a Hansen's disease public health satellite clinic were evaluated for selected latent co-morbidities, consisting of strongyloidiasis, Chagas disease, hepatitis B, HIV, and tuberculosis, and potential exacerbation by immunosuppressive therapy. Implications for treatment of Hansen's disease are discussed.

INTRODUCTION: Strongyloides stercoralis is an intestinal helminth ubiquitous in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. It persists in the human host for a lifetime as a result of autoinfection and if undetected and untreated, can lead to increased morbidity and high mortality in immunocompromised individuals such as the transplant population. Transplant patients, including solid-organ and haematopoietic stem cell transplants (SOT and HSCT, respectively), are at a high risk of hyperinfection and disseminated strongyloidiasis. Unfortunately screening is often not systematically performed. P…

In Swiss prisons, more than 70% of detained people are foreigners and over one-third originate from sub-Saharan Africa or Latin America. These two regions are endemic for various tropical diseases and viral infections, which persist after migration to nonendemic countries. Parasitic infections (schistosomiasis; strongyloidiasis) and cooccurrent viral infections (HIV, hepatitis B (HBV), and hepatitis C (HCV)) are especially of concern for clinical care but have been neglected in empirical research. These diseases often remain silent for years before causing complications, especially if they occ…

Immunosuppression due to therapy after transplantation or associated with HIV infection increases susceptibility to various central nervous system (CNS) infections. This article discusses how immunosuppression modifies the presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of selected parasitic CNS infections, with a focus on toxoplasmosis, Chagas disease, neurocysticercosis, schistosomiasis, and strongyloidiasis.
