Comparison of catheter surface morphologies.

The surface morphologies of different generic types of Foley catheter have been investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The characteristic features of each material are illustrated and it is shown that distinct differences exist between the inner and outer surfaces of latex-based catheters; these differences are attributed to the methods of manufacture. The possible relations between morphology and performance in situ are discussed.

Adsorption of human beta 2-microglobulin at a water/mercury interface.

Adsorption of human beta 2-microglobulin from a neutral solution of 0.15 M NaCl on a mercury surface was studied at 25 degrees C by measurement of the differential capacity of the electrical double layer. From the diffusion-controlled adsorption kinetics, the surface concentration and hence the area occupied by the adsorbed beta 2-microglobulin molecule were determined at various potentials of the mercury surface. The results indicate unfolding or flattening of beta 2-microglobulin molecules adsorbed in particular on the electrically uncharged surface. The extent of this interfacial conformati

Mathematical analysis of the stimulus for the lateral line organ.

Behavioral studies have shown that a blind fish is capable of detecting and recognizing stationary objects in its surroundings. It is proposed that the displacement of water caused by the fish as it moves is the basis for this detection capability. Alterations in the displacement of water around the fish, caused by the obstacle, act as stimuli for the lateral line organ. The question of how these stimuli acting on the skin of the fish, image the environment and what information is thus made available to the fish is the concern of this paper. The stimuli for the lateral line organ are derived m

Measurement of the surface free energy of bacterial cell surfaces and its relevance for adhesion.

An experimental technique is described to determine contact angles on bacterial layers deposited on cellulose triacetate filters. Measurements with water, water-n-propanol mixtures, and alpha-bromonaphthalene were employed to calculate surface free energies of various oral bacteria. Differences of 30 to 40 erg cm-2 were obtained for four different bacterial species isolated from the human oral cavity, if the concept of dispersion and polar surface free energies is applied. The free energies obtained were used to calculate interfacial free energies of adhesion of these bacteria from saliva onto

Physicochemical Characterization of Surface-Active Ionic Liquid-Based Microemulsions for Enhanced Transdermal Delivery of Rutin.

To achieve efficient transdermal delivery of rutin, a microemulsion (ME) system was developed by incorporating deep eutectic solvents (DES) as the inner phase and surface-active ionic liquids (SAILs) as surfactants. The DES used in this study is choline chloride/polyethylene glycol (PEG) 200, while the SAILs used were 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bromides (Cn mimBr) with alkyl chain lengths of 10, 12, and 16 (C10 mimBr, C12 mimBr, C16 mimBr). Structural characterization by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that MEs incorporated with C10 and C1

Ultrafast-light driven plasmonic inactivation of S. epidermidis: mechanistic insights.

Biofilm infections and antimicrobial resistance are growing problems that necessitate alternative strategies to supplement or replace antibiotic drugs. Plasmonic antimicrobials utilize localized thermal, chemical and photophysical responses to the optical excitation of localized plasmons in noble metal nanostructures for microbial inactivation. High fluence femtosecond pulsed laser excitation of noble metal nanoparticles allows for highly non-linear physics and gives rise to a wide range of physico-chemical phenomena, such as plasma, reactive oxygen species generation, and nanocavitation, whic

Co-catalysis of modified metal-organic framework immobilized enzyme with nonionic surfactant for biodiesel preparation.

With the increasing demand for sustainable energy, enzyme-catalyzed biodiesel preparation has garnered significant interest owing to its green and efficient characteristics. However, conventional immobilized lipase (LIP) is susceptible to desorption and inactivation and fails to balance the catalytic efficiency and stability, limitations that seriously restrict the industrial application. To address this, we constructed a carrier through hydrophobically modifying University of Oslo-66-NH2 (UiO-66-NH2), an amino-functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF), with octadecylphosphonic acid (OPA).

Surface modification of bentonite and montmorillonite as novel nano-adsorbents for the removal of phenols, heavy metals and drug residues.

Montmorillonite (Mt) is one of the eco-friendly and low-cost nano-adsorbents for water and wastewater treatment. Interactions of Mt. with various modifiers such as surfactants and polymers make it an ideal adsorbent with good selectivity for the removal of phenols, heavy metals and drug residues from water and wastewater. Surface modification can improve the adsorption potential of Mt. due to increasing the number of adsorption sites and functional groups to remove a wide variety of contaminants. This paper shows a general overview of the structure, adsorptive characteristics, and applications

Clustering of CdSe/CdS Quantum Dot/Quantum Rods into Micelles Can Form Bright, Non-blinking, Stable, and Biocompatible Probes.

We investigate clustered CdSe/CdS quantum dots/quantum rods, ranging from single to multiple encapsulated rods within amphiphilic diblock copolymer micelles, by time-resolved optical spectroscopy. The effect of the clustering and the cluster size on the optical properties is addressed. The clusters are bright and stable and show no blinking while retaining the fundamental optical properties of the individual quantum dots/quantum rods. Cell studies show neither unspecific uptake nor morphological changes of the cells, despite the increased sizes of the clusters.

Synthesis and characterization of CdSe nanorods using a novel microemulsion method at moderate temperature.

CdSe nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized using a novel microemulsion method at moderate temperature. It is found that with a combination of the surfactant AOT and hydrazine hydrate, it is possible to control the morphology of the nanoparticles. The hydrazine hydrate acts as both a reducing agent and a templating agent that favors the formation of a rodlike structure. The composition, morphology and optical properties of the CdSe nanoparticles were investigated using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spec

Enhanced aqueous solubilization of tetrachloroethylene by a rhamnolipid biosurfactant.

A rhamnolipid biosurfactant produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 9027 was isolated, purified and characterized in terms of its ability to mobilize and solubilize tetrachloroethylene (PCE) for potential use in surfactant-enhanced aquifer remediation (SEAR) applications. Using a drop volume method, the PCE-biosurfactant steady-state interfacial tension was determined and found to be ca. 10 mN/m which is not low enough to cause significant PCE nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) mobilization. It was observed that the biosurfactant partitioned significantly into PCE at aqueous concentrations higher

Determination, by dynamic surface-tension analysis, of the molar mass of proteins denatured in guanidine thiocyanate.

A drop-based dynamic surface-tension detector (DSTD) has been used to study the dynamic surface tension behavior of proteins denatured in guanidine thiocyanate (GndSCN). The dynamic surface tension at the air-liquid interface is obtained by measuring the internal pressure of drops that grow and detach at a specified rate. In the method the sample of interest is injected and subsequently flows to the DSTD-sensing capillary tip. For this work, a novel DSTD calibration procedure utilizing two distinct mobile phases is applied. Here, the mobile phases are aqueous with different constituents, for e

Novel biosurfactant-stabilized nanoemulsions integrating interfacial stabilization and antibacterial activity for safe surface disinfection.

Chemical disinfectants are widely used for microbial control. However, concerns regarding their safety and environmental impact have driven the development of alternative antimicrobial systems based on natural components. Here, a biosurfactant (BS) derived from Bacillus velezensis GJ1 was used to construct a natural grade nanoemulsion (NE) system using thyme oil as the oil phase. Unlike conventional formulations in which surfactants mainly act as passive stabilizers, BS in this system contributed to both interfacial stabilization and antibacterial activity, enabling the development of a natura

An investigation into the role of surfactants in controlling particle size of polymeric nanocapsules containing penicillin-G in double emulsion.

Preparation, characterization and drug release behavior of loaded polybutyl adipate (PBA) nanocapsules with penicillin-G are described here. The nanocapsules were produced using a double emulsion solvent evaporation technique, using dichloromethane as an organic solvent and Tween and Span as surfactants. In this process, a mixture of glycerin and water was used instead of the traditional stabilizer system in the preparation of double emulsion. The influence of surfactants on the property of nanocapsules was discussed in detail. The effects of Span and Tween to modify the size of the nanocapsul

Gradient orbital coupling to boost radical adsorption on Cu atom sites for efficient biocatalytic performance.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) holds broad application prospects in the biomedical field, yet its inherent enzyme-mimetic activity exhibits limitations. This study reveals that Cu doping unleashes exceptional biocatalytic activity of MoS2 by forming d-p-d gradient orbital coupling. Projected density of states analysis indicates this coupling establishes covalent Cu-S-Mo bonds, precisely regulating radical adsorption on Cu atom sites to achieve highly efficient scavenging rate. The resulting Cu-MoS2 exhibits superoxide dismutase-like activity approximately 40-fold higher than pure MoS2, along with

Influence of Coal Petrology Characteristics on the Organic Matter Adsorption Properties: A Molecular Simulation Perspective.

The interaction between small organic molecules and coal macerals plays a critical role in regulating fluid retention and transport in coal-related energy and environmental systems. However, the microscopic mechanisms governing adsorption selectivity and interfacial dynamics on different maceral surfaces remain insufficiently understood. In this study, molecular dynamics simulations were employed to investigate the adsorption and desorption behaviors of toluene (TOL) and tetrahydrofuran-2-ol (FUR) on inertinite (INE) and vitrinite (VIT) surfaces at the molecular level. Time-dependent variation
