Our saliva production is continuous, and we regularly swallow the saliva that accumulates in the oral cavity. The patient’s ability to manage secretions therefore seems to be an obvious variable in the assessment of a swallowing disorder. Nevertheless, even in validated bedside surveys, it appears in different forms and with different emphasis. In our literature review, we investigated this phenomenon, known in the literature as saliva swallowing or dry swallowing, using a state-of-the-art literature review methodology. We sought to answer the questions of how the physiology of dry swallowing

Background: After a severe brain injury and a coma, patients may develop disorders of consciousness (DoC), frequently accompanied by severe dysphagia. The evaluation and therapy of swallowing are therefore essential aspects of their management. Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the SWallowing Assessment in Disorders of Consciousness (SWADOC) tool in the assessment of swallowing in post-comatose patients. Here, we validate its quantitative items, describe preliminary results and identify limitations. Methods: Fourteen post-comatose patients were repeatedly evaluated with the Simplified Ev

This pilot study used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to examine brain activity in selected regions of the left motor and sensory cortex while doing swallowing-related tasks. Specifically, differences in cortical activation during normal saliva swallows, effortful swallows, and tongue pressing were investigated. Nine healthy, right-handed adults (5 female, 4 male; Age: 22-30 years) were recruited. The tasks included were (1) normal saliva swallowing, (2) effortful saliva swallowing, and (3) lingual pressing against the palate. Each task was completed three times in a block, for a…

Complications of head and neck cancers and their treatment can lead to dysphagia. Two fifty-seven-year-old male cases, one with laryngeal cancer and one with tongue cancer, were included in the study. After 16 weeks of swallowing rehabilitation, positive changes were observed in the physical parameters, quality of life, and nutritional status of the patients. In conclusion, patients with head and neck cancer should be evaluated by physiotherapists for dysphagia. The participation and motivation of the patients in the rehabilitation program are highly effective in the outcome of the treatment.

BACKGROUND: Swallowing is a complex process that alters with age and neurological diseases; swallowing disorders can be a consequence of both of them. As an advanced multivariate statistical method, hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) was utilized to make the dendrograms, which was used to find the relationship between the variables. The purpose of this study is to ascertain the type of clustering exhibited by the variables using HCA and to evaluate the approach to major neurodegenerative diseases (MND) with swallowing disorders based on the results obtained.
METHODS: Data were collected from

Compensatory strategies used to treat dysphagia, like the chin-down and chin-up positions, are often employed by speech-language pathologists to enhance swallowing safety. However, their effects on cortical neural responses remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the cortical hemodynamic responses to swallowing across three head positions -chin-down, chin-neutral, and chin-up - using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) in the bilateral precentral and postcentral gyrus regions of interest. Twenty-six healthy adults completed 32 swallows of 5 ml water in each head position. Res…

During the past decade, there has been an increased research focus on the prevalence, nature, and impact of newly acquired critical illness dysphagia. Disordered function can impact the safety and efficiency across all stages of the swallow mechanism, with detrimental impacts on patients' body systems, function, and participation. Accurate assessment of swallow function is key to informed diagnosis and enhances intervention planning. We discuss the current evidence base around dysphagia pathophysiology with a detailed discussion considering the modes of ventilation commonly received in intensi

OBJECTIVES: Cervical chordoma is a rare, low-grade primary bone tumor occurring in the axial skeleton. Due to challenges in surgical exposure caused by anatomic location, patients may experience dysfunction in speech and swallowing. The objective of this study was to characterize speech and swallowing outcomes for patients undergoing surgical resection of cervical chordoma. Moreover, we detail in-depth two cases with similar initial presentations to compare prognostic factors and management strategies.
METHODS: Eleven patients with histologically confirmed cervical chordoma treated between 19

This report describes the ingestion of a dislodged Somatex Intrauterine Stent by the fetus. At 35 weeks one shunt was visualized in the fetal stomach, suggesting that the fetus had swallowed it. The shunt kept its position in the stomach until the last follow up scan at 37 weeks. At 38 weeks the patient went into spontaneous labor and vaginally delivered a boy weighting 3590 g. The first chest X-ray on the day of birth demonstrated the dislodged shunt in the duodenum while the other shunt drained the left kidney. The mother started breastfeeding. The x-ray on the second day of life was made af

Swallowing is induced by a central pattern generator in the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS). We aimed to create a medullary slice preparation to elucidate the neural architecture of the central pattern generator of swallowing (Sw-CPG) and record its neural activities. Experiments were conducted on 2-day-old Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 46). The brainstem-spinal cord was transected at the pontomedullary and cervicothoracic junctions; the medulla was sliced transversely at thicknesses of 600, 700, or 800 μm. The rostral end of the slice was 100 μm rostral to the vagus nerve. We recorded hypoglossal

This study discusses non-steady effects encountered in peristaltic flows in oesophagus. The purpose of this communication is to evolve a mechanism to diagnose tumor in an oesophagus mathematically. The tumor is modelled by generic bump function of certain height and width. The method of solution follows long wavelength and low-Reynolds number approximations for unsteady flow, while integrations have been performed numerically in order to plot graphs, which reveal various characteristics of the flow. The goal is to assess how pressure varies across the tumor's width. The spatial, as well as tem

Several studies support the benefits of biofeedback and Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) in dysphagia therapy. Most commonly, adhesive electrodes are placed on the submental region of the neck to conduct Electromyography (EMG) measurements for controlling gamified biofeedback and functional electrical stimulation. Due to the diverse origin of EMG activity at the neck, it can be assumed that EMG measurements alone do not accurately reflect the onset of the pharyngeal swallowing phase (onset of swallowing). To date, no study has addressed the timing and detection performance of swallow on

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the avulsion of a primary maxillary first molar in a 22-month-old child, which occurred while she had a training cup in her mouth. The parents noticed bleeding in the mouth and a missing tooth, and brought the child to a pediatric emergency department. A clinical assessment by the pediatric dental team confirmed the avulsion and since the tooth could not be located, a radiograph of the chest was obtained to rule out aspiration. The chest radiograph showed the tooth to be in the proximal jejunum.
