Osteoporosis (OP) is a systemic skeletal disease characterized by reduced bone mass and increased risk of fractures, with limitations in traditional treatment methods. The "brainbone axis" theory has revealed a bidirectional regulatory network between the central nervous system and the skeletal system, providing new insights into the mechanisms and treatment of OP. This review summarizes the bidirectional regulatory mechanisms of the "brain-bone axis", including descending pathways (such as the regulation of bone metabolism by the sympathetic nervous system, parasympathetic nervous system, and…

To investigate ventricular tachycardias produced in healthy canine myocardium by stimulation of sympathetic ganglia or cardiac nerves, we simultaneously recorded a surface ECG and 63 ventricular electrograms in anesthetized open-chest dogs. Isochronal and isopotential maps were generated off-line by computer. Ventricular tachycardia with uniform beat-to-beat morphology was induced in 13 or 22 dogs by electrical stimulation of the left stellate ganglion (five experiments), the left middle cervical ganglion (four experiments), the left caudal pole cardiopulmonary nerve (two experiments), or the

Sympathetic activity and obesity have a reciprocal relationship. Firstly, hypothalamic obesity is associated with decreased sympathetic activity. Caffeine and ephedrine increase sympathetic activity and induce weight loss, of which 25% is due to increased metabolic rate and 75% is due to a reciprocally decreased food intake. Secondly, hormones and drugs that affect body weight have an inverse relationship between food intake and metabolic rate. Neuropeptide Y decreases sympathetic activity and increases food intake and body weight. Thirdly, a gastric pacemaker Transcend and vagotomy increase t

Primary afferent neurons rarely, if ever, synapse on the sympathetic preganglionic neurons that regulate the cardiovascular system, nor do sympathetic preganglionic neurons normally exhibit spontaneous activity in the absence of excitatory inputs. Therefore, after serious spinal cord injury "spinal sympathetic interneurons" provide the sole excitatory and inhibitory inputs to sympathetic preganglionic neurons. Few studies have addressed the anatomy and physiology of spinal sympathetic interneurons, to a great extent because they are difficult to identify. Therefore, this chapter begins with de

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), also known as complex regional pain syndrome type I (CRPS I), is a disabling neuropathic pain syndrome. Controversy exists about the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions for the management of RSD/CRPS I. In order to ascertain appropriate therapies we conducted a review of existing randomized controlled trials of therapies for this disabling disease. Eligible trials were identified from the Cochrane, Pubmed, Embase and MEDLINE databases from 1966 through June 2000, from references in retrieved reports and from references in review articles. The segmental organization of the thoracic sympathetic trunk and all its ramifications was studied in 6 human fetuses (16-22 weeks) by means of the acetylcholinesterase in toto staining method. Each trunk was divided into 12 sympathetic segments. A segment is defined as that part of the sympathetic trunk which is connected via its rami communicantes with one spinal nerve, without discriminating between grey and white rami. The diameter of the rami communicantes and their direction towards the spinal nerves are variable. The number of peripheral segmental ramifications of the trunk is much larg

When the postganglionic fibres to the nictitating membrane are stimulated in a cat treated with reserpine, the membrane contracts. The contraction is increased after the injection of eserine and is abolished with atropine. Thus the fibres stimulated appear to be cholinergic. When the splenic nerve is stimulated in a cat treated with reserpine there is similar evidence of the presence of cholinergic fibres; the spleen dilates, the dilatation is greater in the presence of eserine and is abolished by atropine. The hypogastric nerves when stimulated cause inhibition of the uterus of the virgin cat

Syncope is defined as a transient loss of consciousness and postural tone, characterized by rapid onset, short duration, and spontaneous rec … ggerated sympathoexcitation and (2) failure to activate the sympathetic nerve. We conclude that the sympathetic nervous system can control cardiovascular function, and its failure results in syncope; however, responses of the system obtained by microneurographically-recorded MSNA would determine the pathophysiology of the onset and progression of syncope, explaining the tre …

The term dysautonomia refers to a change in autonomic nervous system function that adversely affects health. The changes range from transient, occasional episodes of neurally mediated hypotension to progressive neurodegenerative diseases; from disorders in which altered autonomic function plays a primary pathophysiologic role to disorders in which it worsens an independent pathologic state; and from mechanistically straightforward to mysterious and controversial entities. In chronic autonomic failure (pure autonomic failure, multiple system atrophy, or autonomic failure in Parkinson disease),

BACKGROUND: Sensory, motor, and autonomic neuropathy has been reported after electrical injury. Besides subclinical involvement of the sympathetic nervous system during the 1st year post injury, late clinical manifestations of this involvement have been reported sporadically. This study was designed to investigate how the clinical and electrodiagnostic manifestations of sympathetic involvement would change with time in electricity victims.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Sixty electrically burnt patients were followed for 22 months with sympathetic skin response (SSR) and autonomic system derangement …

Autonomic nerves, including the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves, control the immune system along with their physiological functions. On the peripheral side, the interaction between the splenic sympathetic nerves and immune cells is important for the anti-inflammatory effects. However, the central mechanism underlying these anti-inflammatory effects remains unclear. C1 neurons respond to stressors and subsequently determine the outflow of the autonomic nervous system. We have previously shown that C1 neurons protect against acute kidney injury and found a signaling connection between per

The aim of this study was to evaluate the autonomic function in patients with essential tremor (ET). Thirty-one adult patients with ET and 26 healthy controls were enrolled in the study. The electrophysiological evaluations of the autonomic nervous system function were performed by sympathetic skin response (SSR) and R-R interval variation (RRIV) tests. The mean latency of SSR in ET patients was significantly delayed compared with the controls (P = 0.01). The mean amplitude of sympathetic skin response was significantly lower in ET patients in comparison to the controls (P = 0.001). No differe

The present study investigated the impact of central α2-adrenergic mechanisms on sympathetic action potential (AP) discharge, recruitment and latency strategies. We used the microneurographic technique to record muscle sympathetic nerve activity and a continuous wavelet transform to investigate postganglionic sympathetic AP firing during a baseline condition and an infusion of a α2-adrenergic receptor agonist, dexmedetomidine (10 min loading infusion of 0.225 µg kg-1; maintenance infusion of 0.1-0.5 µg kg h-1) in eight healthy individuals (28 ± 7 years, five females). Dexmedetomidine reduced m

Neurohormonal antagonism is now recognized as an essential treatment modality for heart failure. As a prime example, the benefits of blocking the renin-angiotensin system with angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors are clearly established for all four New York Heart Association classes. In this clinical trials review, we discuss two other therapies with neurohormonal targets: beta-blockers and the sympathetic nervous system, and the aldosterone antagonist spironolactone.

The sympathetic nervous system is crucial for responding to environmental changes. This regulation is coordinated by the spinal sympathetic preganglionic neurons (SPNs), innervating both postganglionic neurons and the adrenal gland. Despite decades of research supporting the concept of selective control within this system, the neural circuit organization responsible for the output specificity remains poorly understood. Here, by combining recent single-cell transcriptome data with viral-genetic toolkits in mice, we identify two subtypes of SPNs in the lower thoracic spinal cord, defined at the …

Familial dysautonomia (FD), a rare neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorder affects the sympathetic and sensory nervous system. Although almost all patients harbor a mutation in ELP1, it remains unresolved exactly how function of sympathetic neurons (symNs) is affected; knowledge critical for understanding debilitating disease hallmarks, including cardiovascular instability or dysautonomic crises, that result from dysregulated sympathetic activity. Here, we employ the human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC) system to understand symN disease mechanisms and test candidate drugs. FD symNs are

The respiratory disorders expressed by obstructive hypopneas and apneas during sleep, as well as the sequences of crescendo in respiratory effort without hypopneas or apneas which define the upper airway resistance syndrome, terminate with (thanks to) an arousal, defined by EEG changes. In some cases, the activation of the central nervous system is restricted to a sympathetic activation, which has been mainly studied in the cardiovascular area, and is not always accompanied by a cortical arousal. Various approaches (heart rate, blood pressure, pulse transit time, peripheral arterial tonometry)
