BACKGROUND: Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a very heterogeneous syndrome defined by impaired immunoglobulin production. The primary defect remains unknown, but many reports describe peripheral blood T and B lymphocyte dysfunctions in a substantial proportion of CVID patients. Immunophenotypic alterations on memory B lymphocytes correlate with clinical findings. A B-cell-oriented classification principle of the patients has been proposed.

Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) infection of the spleen is a potent modifier of splenic function. Prior to malaria infection, we infected two mouse strains of differing susceptibility to Plasmodium chabaudi AS (C57BL/6 and A/J) with this mycobacterium. OBJECTIVE: To investigate immunophenotypic alterations in regulatory T cells (Tregs) and neutrophil dynamics in adult sickle cell anemia (SCA) patients during painful crises and steady state.
METHODS: Ninety-three participants were included: 17 SCA patients in painful crisis, 27 in steady state, and 49 healthy controls. Flow cytometry was used to assess CD3+CD4+CD25+FoxP3+ Tregs and related subsets. Hematological parameters were evaluated by complete blood counts. OBJECTIVE: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) consists of a heterogeneous group of inflammatory disorders, within which there are a number of clinical subgroups. Diagnosis and assignment to a particular subgroup can be problematical and more concise methods of subgroup classification are required.
