Rupture of the short head tendon of the biceps brachii.

Subcutaneous rupture of the short head tendon of the biceps brachii is a very rare lesion, with only five cases previously reported. The case of a 67-year-old farmer whose tendon ruptured following a mild muscle effort is presented. The degenerative changes revealed by histological examination of the injured tendon were so severe as to lead to the conclusion that its tensile strength must have fallen considerably prior to rupture. The most characteristic clinical signs of this rupture are a sizeable bulge in the middle third of the injured arm, and a hollow in the site normally occupied by the

Open tibia plateau fracture with intra-osseous dislocation of the patella and quadriceps tendon rupture: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Both tibial plateau fractures and extensor apparatus injuries are serious injuries to the knee joint that generally do not occur in the same patient. We report a rare case of open tibial plateau fracture combined with quadriceps tendon rupture and complete displacement of the patella into the tibial plateau fracture. CASE PRESENTATION: The case involved a male who was 19 years old who had been in a motorcycle accident. The patient was admitted to our department with an open tibial plateau fracture 3 h post-injury. X-ray showed a tibial plateau fracture and complete displacement of

[Dislocation of the extensor tendons of the hand at the metacarpo-phalangeal level (zone V of Verdan)].

MATERIAL AND METHODS: Traumatic dislocation of the extensor tendon over the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint is a rare lesion that is caused by the dysfunction or rupture of the sagittal band, which is an important stabilizing structure of the extensor tendon. This mechanical alteration presents itself as instability that affects function and may cause pain or snapping during finger motion. The diagnosis is made when ulnar dislocation of the extensor tendon is observed over the MCP joint. Nonsurgical treatment is successful and should be attempted when injuries are diagnosed within the first th

Late rupture of the extensor pollicis longus tendon: the case against attrition.

The authors report the case of a 23-year-old man who sustained ipsilateral volar Barton's and scaphoid fractures which were complicated by a late rupture of the extensor pollicis longus tendon. The anatomy of the injury precluded attrition as the cause of the tendon rupture and the alternative theory of ischaemic rupture is examined. Clinicians should be aware that injuries other than the Colles' fracture may be complicated by rupture of extensor pollicis longus.

Tennis Players and Water Polo Athletes Now Have Something in Common to Talk About: MRI Findings of Extensor Carpi Ulnaris Chronic Subsheath Injury.

Pathologies of the extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU) tendon are often due to de Quervain's tenosynovitis of the first dorsal compartment among the wrist tendon pathologies. A common cause for tendinitis and tenosynovitis of the ECU tendon is its dislocation. ECU dislocation is unique among all wrist tendon injuries due to its typical location within a fibro-osseous tunnel bordered by a fibrous sheath, which is termed as the subsheath. The subsheath is the main anatomic structure keeping the ECU tendon within the tunnel. Subsheath tears can lead to a fixed or dynamic pattern of ECU dislocation. This…

The effects of cyclic stretching on tensile properties of the rabbit's skeletal muscle.

OBJECTIVE: To define the threshold of muscle injury with cyclic passive stretch. DESIGN: The changes in the load-deformation curve of muscle-tendon unit were monitored until the failure point by an in vivo rabbit model. BACKGROUND: Muscle injuries range in severity from a simple strain to complete rupture. Although strains occur more frequently than complete failures, only a few studies have investigated the phenomena of these sub-failure injuries. Monitoring of the continuum for stretch-induced injury allows us to define the threshold of stretch injury. METHODS: Thirty rabbits' triceps surae

Biodegradable Polymer Electrospinning for Tendon Repairment.

With the degradation after aging and the destruction of high-intensity exercise, the frequency of tendon injury is also increasing, which will lead to serious pain and disability. Due to the structural specificity of the tendon tissue, the traditional treatment of tendon injury repair has certain limitations. Biodegradable polymer electrospinning technology with good biocompatibility and degradability can effectively repair tendons, and its mechanical properties can be achieved by adjusting the fiber diameter and fiber spacing. Here, this review first briefly introduces the structure and funct

Limb Salvage of a Massive Distal Radius and Ulna Osteoarticular Defect Using Acute Bone Shortening.

CASE: A 53-year-old man sustained a severe open distal radius and ulna fracture with approximately 7-cm osteoarticular bone loss, extensive extensor musculotendinous junction avulsions, and radial nerve disruption. Acute 3-cm forearm shortening restored tendon tension and reduced defect size, enabling primary tendon reconstruction with pull-in sutures and nerve repair. Early staged free vascularized fibular grafting was performed. Despite postoperative Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection requiring implant removal and local antibiotics, solid union was achieved with preserved forearm rotation at 2

Spontaneous Closed Extensor Tendon Ruptures in the Nonrheumatoid Hand and Wrist.

Extensor tendon disruptions are frequently seen in emergency rooms and hand surgery offices. Traumatic open injuries are more familiar, but spontaneous closed extensor tendon ruptures represent an important clinical entity. Often occurring without any prodromal warning, they can surprise patients and their providers alike. Spontaneous extensor tendon ruptures often occur in the setting of systemic medical conditions or hand and wrist pathology, with the mechanisms that lead to rupture often dependent upon the underlying comorbidities. Remaining knowledge of the factors that place patients at r

[Ultrasonography of the tendons: from image to pathology].

Radiology allows to define etiologies of tendon injuries and authorize a most suitable treatment. For that reason, the use of the sonography has been developed from several years and has four main purposes to define the type of injury and to orient the treatment: to confirm the real existence of the tendon tear, to need the exact location the same one, to determine the gravity of the lesion, and finally, to evaluate its acute or chronic character. In this paper, we will try to define the normal pattern of the tendon and describe the more frequent lesions of the shoulder or the ankle: complete …
