Students' interaction anxiety and social phobia in interprofessional education in Hong Kong: mapping a new research direction.

BACKGROUND: Interprofessional education (IPE) has been promoted as a breakthrough in healthcare because of the impact when professionals work as a team. However, despite its inception dating back to the 1960s, its science has taken a long time to advance. There is a need to theorize IPE to cultivate creative insights for a nuanced understanding of IPE. This study aims to propose a research agenda on social interaction by understanding the measurement scales used and guiding researchers to contribute to the discussion of social processes in IPE. METHOD: This quantitative research was undertake

Validating the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21 in Community Mothers and Fathers Across the Infant's First Year.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the effects of different types of parental health status on child development and health, valid parental distress measurement instruments are needed. The aim was to assess the psychometric measurement properties of the 21-item Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21) used during the postnatal year in community samples of Swedish mothers and fathers. METHODS: Data were collected at postnatal months 1, 6 and 12 from 66 mothers (mean age 31 years) and 58 fathers (mean age 32 years). Psychometric measurement properties were assessed with interitem analysis and intra-i

EEG theta/beta ratio as a potential biomarker for attentional control and resilience against deleterious effects of stress on attention.

Anxious stress compromises cognitive executive performance. This occurs, for instance, in cognitive performance anxiety (CPA), in which anxiety about one's cognitive performance causes that performance to actually deteriorate (e.g., test anxiety). This is thought to result from a prefrontal cortically (PFC) mediated failure of top-down attentional control over stress-induced automatic processing of threat-related information. In addition, stress-induced increased catecholamine influx into the PFC may directly compromise attentional function. Previous research has suggested that the ratio betwe

Effectiveness and safety of Xinkeshu on coronary artery disease patients combined with anxiety and depression symptoms after percutaneous coronary intervention: A protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: It's known that coronary heart disease (CHD) patients after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) was significantly associated with anxiety and depression symptoms. Several studies have showed that Xinkeshu tablet (XKS), a kind of Chinese herbal medicine, could effectively improve post-PCI postoperative mood disorders in CHD patients. However, the intensity of evidence has been poor, limiting the further clinical application of XKS to patients above. This systematic review and meta-analysis will assess the effectiveness and safety of studies of XKS in CHD patients with anxiety a

Long-term benzodiazepine use and cognitive decline in the elderly: the Epidemiology of Vascular Aging Study.

Several cross-sectional studies have found cognitive impairment in subjects taking benzodiazepines for long periods. However, it is not known whether long-term use of benzodiazepines accelerates cognitive decline in the elderly. The authors addressed this issue in a follow-up study of 1,389 people aged 60 to 70 years recruited from the electoral rolls of the city of Nantes (Epidemiology of Vascular Aging study). Data on cognitive functioning (five cognitive tests), depressive symptoms (Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale), anxiety symptoms (Spielberger Inventory Scale), use of ps

Spatial anxiety relates to spatial abilities as a function of working memory in children.

Spatial ability is a strong predictor of students' pursuit of higher education in science and mathematics. However, very little is known about the affective factors that influence individual differences in spatial ability, particularly at a young age. We examine the role of spatial anxiety in young children's performance on a mental rotation task. We show that even at a young age, children report experiencing feelings of nervousness at the prospect of engaging in spatial activities. Moreover, we show that these feelings are associated with reduced mental rotation ability among students with hi

Inhibitory control and symptom severity in late life generalized anxiety disorder.

Contemporary models of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) posit that worry functions as an avoidance strategy. During worry, individuals inhibit threat-related imagery in order to minimize autonomic reactivity to phobic topics. This conceptualization of worry suggests a role for the executive system in exerting top-down inhibitory control (IC) over threat processing. We tested the hypothesis that better performance on an IC task would be associated with greater severity of worry and concomitant anxious mood. Forty-three older adults (age 60-77) with GAD completed the Stroop color word task and

Clinical comparison of Tourette's disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The authors report on 16 outpatients with Tourette's disorder, 16 outpatients with obsessive-compulsive disorder, and 16 normal control subjects who underwent structured interviews and psychological testing. Previous findings of a high incidence of obsessive-compulsive disorder in patients with Tourette's disorder were confirmed. There was a significantly greater incidence of tics in the patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder and their relatives. Both patient groups had high rates of unipolar depressive and generalized anxiety disorders. Panic and phobic disorders were frequent in the pat

The Social Thoughts and Beliefs Scale: a new inventory for assessing cognitions in social phobia.

Development and initial psychometric features of a new inventory to assess cognitions associated with social phobia are described. The Social Thoughts and Beliefs Scale (STABS) is designed to assess cognitions in individuals with social phobia. In the 1st study, an initial pool of 45 items was reduced to 21. In the 2nd study, psychometric features of the scale were examined in a sample of individuals with social phobia, other anxiety disorders, and no psychiatric disorder. Total scores and two factor scores significantly differentiated individuals with social phobia from those in the other gro

Polymorphisms in the oxytocin receptor and their association with apathy and impaired social cognition in Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive, motor, and neuropsychiatric manifestations. Oxytocin is a neuropeptide studied for its role as a neuromodulator regulating multiple behaviors linked to social cognition. Genetic variation of oxytocin receptor (OXTR) might interact in the etiology and development of several impaired social behaviors. Our aim was to study OXTR polymorphisms and their relationship with apathy and social cognition in HD. METHODS: OXTR was sequenced in 21 cases and 22 controls. We assessed apathy, anxiety, depression,

Psychopathological dimensions of depression: a factor study of the 17-item Hamilton depression rating scale in unipolar depressed outpatients.

BACKGROUND: Agreement on the factor structure of the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) has not been consistent among studies, and some investigators argued that the scale's factor structure is not reliable. This study aimed at shedding more light on this debated issue. METHODS: We studied 186 adults with unipolar depression (Major Depressive Disorder, n=80; Dysthymic Disorder, n=71; Depressive Disorder Not Otherwise Specified, n=25; Adjustment Disorder, n=10). They had no comorbid DSM-IV axis I or axis II disorders, and had received no treatment with antidepressant drugs in the previous
