Two 10-month-old heifers from a group of 20 young stock showed symptoms closely resembling paralytic myoglobinuria. One animal died five days after the onset of the symptoms and the other recovered slowly with selenium and vitamin E therapy. Histological examination of muscle tissue from the dead animal showed a myopathy resembling that due to vitamin E deficiency.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a devastating disease with high morbidity and mortality. Despite significant progress in the pharmacotherapy, current treatments only ameliorate the symptoms and cannot heal PH. Gene therapy may target the roots of the disease and holds evident promise. The current bottleneck for lung gene therapy is the delivery method. The requirements for the delivery mode are efficiency, safety, and the ability to target the anatomical site of interest, while avoiding off-target effects. Aerosolized gene delivery has been used in several studies and proven to be an efficient

Heart failure (HF) is one of the most critical health and economic burdens worldwide, and its prevalence is continuously increasing. HF is a disease that occurs due to a pathological change arising from the function or structure of the heart tissue and usually progresses. Numerous experimental HF models have been created to elucidate the pathophysiological mechanisms that cause HF. An understanding of the pathophysiology of HF is essential for the development of novel efficient therapies. During the past few decades, animal models have provided new insights into the complex pathogenesis of HF.

INTRODUCTION: Endoscopic bariatric therapies (EBT) are emerging as effective therapies in the management of overweight patient with or without metabolic syndrome. Unfortunately most procedures only restrict the gastric volume without altering the underlying metabolism which is seen in surgical patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility and limitations of a natural orifice trans-luminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) one anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB).
METHODS: NOTES OAGB was performed in three porcine models. The steps of the procedure can be divide as follows: (1) Endo

The involvement of autoreactive T cells in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) as well as in autoimmune animal models of arthritis has been well established; however, unanswered questions, such as the role of joint-homing T cells, remain. Animal models of arthritis are superb experimental tools in demonstrating how T cells trigger joint inflammation, and thus can help to further our knowledge of disease mechanisms and potential therapies. In this Review, we discuss the similarities and differences in T-cell subsets and functions between RA and mouse arthritis models. For example, var

A growing and interdisciplinary translational neuroscience research effort for neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) is investigating the mechanisms of dysfunction and testing effective treatment strategies in animal models and, when possible, in the clinic. NDDs with a genetic basis have received particular attention. Transgenic animals that mimic genetic insults responsible for disease in man have provided insight about mechanisms of dysfunction, and, surprisingly, have shown that cognitive deficits can be addressed in adult animals. This review will present recent translational research based

OBJECT: The incidence of primary central nervous system lymphomas (PCNSLs) has increased over the past several decades. Unfortunately, even with the most effective therapeutic regimen (that is, methotrexate with wholebrain radiation therapy), PCNSL recurs within a few years in more than half of the treated patients and is eventually fatal. Because PCNSL usually occurs in older patients and in those with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, combination treatments in which both chemo- and radiation therapy are used is often poorly tolerated and results in a significant reduction in the quality of

Anthrax is a zoonotic disease and is caused by Bacillus anthracis which is a Gram-positive, nonmotile, spore-forming rod, found in soil. The spores can remain viable for decades. Transmission occurs naturally in humans by direct contact with infected animals or the contaminated animal products. Anthrax is a major health problem in eastern and southern India, with a significant human incidence because the disease is poorly controlled. Here, we discuss such a case of naturally occurring fatal anthrax in North-East India. A 48-year-old man from Assam presented with seizures, hematemesis, and feve

BackgroundTherapeutic hypothermia has shown potential in cardiac intervention for years; however, its adoption into the neurovascular space has been limited. Studies have pointed to slow cooling and limited depth of hypothermia yielding negative outcomes. Here we present an insulated catheter that allows for consistent infusion of chilled saline directly to the brain. Direct delivery of cold saline allows a faster depth of hypothermia, which could have a benefit to the growth of ischemic lesions.MethodsTen canines were randomized to either receive selective brain cooling or no additional thera

The study evaluated the association of DNase I enzyme with antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) in the treatment of oral candidiasis in mice infected with fluconazole-susceptible (CaS) and -resistant (CaR) Candida albicans strains. Mice were inoculated with C. albicans, and after the infection had been established, the tongues were exposed to DNase for 5 min, followed by photosensitizer [Photodithazine®(PDZ)] and light (LED), either singly or combined. The treatments were performed for 5 consecutive days. Treatment efficacy was evaluated by assessing the tongues via fungal viable populati

Despite the advent of antiretroviral therapy, complications of HIV-1 infection with concurrent drug abuse are an emerging problem. Opiates are well known to modulate immune responses by preventing the development of cell-mediated immune responses. Their effect on the pathogenesis of HIV-1 infection however remains controversial. Using the simian immunodeficiency virus/macaque model of HIV pathogenesis, we sought to explore the impact of morphine on disease progression and pathogenesis. Sixteen rhesus macaques were divided into two groups; four were administered saline and 12 others morphine ro

Pneumonic plague, caused by inhalation of Yersinia pestis, represents a major bioterrorism threat for which no vaccine is available. Based on the knowledge that genetic delivery of monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) with adenovirus (Ad) gene transfer vectors results in rapid, high-level antibody expression, we evaluated the hypothesis that Ad-mediated delivery of a neutralizing antibody directed against the Y. pestis V antigen would protect mice against a Y. pestis challenge. MAbs specific for the Y. pestis V antigen were generated, and the most effective in protecting mice against a lethal intranas

Biological agents and ionizing radiation lead to more severe clinical outcomes than either insult alone. This study investigated the survival of non-irradiated and (60)Co-gamma-irradiated mice given therapy for inhalation anthrax with ciprofloxacin (CIP) or a clinically relevant mixture of clarithromycin (CLR) and its major human microbiologically important metabolite 14-hydroxy clarithromycin (14-OH CLR). All B6D2F1/J 10-week-old female mice were inoculated intratracheally with 3 x 10(8) c.f.u. of Bacillus anthracis Sterne spores 4 days after the non-lethal 7 Gy dose of (60)Co gamma radiation

The redox unbalance in erythrocytes has been found to contribute significantly in the development of anemia in visceral leishmaniasis (VL). The present study revealed enhanced production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and gradual depletion of alpha-tocopherol and ascorbate in the erythrocytes of infected animals. The response of erythrocytes to chronic treatment with antioxidants was studied in hamsters during leishmanial infection. Treatment with a combination of alpha-tocopherol and ascorbate proved to be the most effective preventive for the proteolytic degradation of erythrocyte membrane

Anti-CD154 variably prolongs allograft survival in nonhuman primates. Rodent studies suggest that adding pretransplant donor-specific transfusion (DST) and/or rapamycin to anti-CD154 improves survival. The CD154-specific Ab IDEC-131 was tested alone and in combination with rapamycin for its ability to inhibit rhesus MLRs. The ability of the Ab to block endothelial activation was also assessed. IDEC-131 was then tested alone and in combination with DST and/or rapamycin for its ability to prevent rejection of full-thickness, MHC-mismatched rhesus skin allografts. Animals were monitored for donor

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Bladder surface hyperpermeability may be a factor in the etiology of interstitial cystitis (IC). We evaluated the intravesical instillation of ethanol as a quantitative measure of bladder hyperpermeability in an experimental model in male New Zealand White rabbits.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In two study groups (N = 4 each), the glycosaminoglycan (GAG) layer on the bladder surface was disrupted via a 10-minute exposure to 10% protamine sulfate (PS). The study groups then underwent bladder instillation of 10% (group 1) and 20% (group 2) ethanol. The control groups underwent

The clinical course of the primary experimental Fasciola gigantica infection was investigated in riverine buffalo calves of the Murrah breed. Nine male calves aged 12-15 months were randomly assigned to two groups of five (Group I) and four (Group II) animals. Each animal in Group I, was orally infected with 1000 metacercariae (mc) of F. gigantica, whereas Group II animals did not receive any infection dose and served as uninfected controls. No clinical signs of fasciolosis were observed until the sixth week post-infection (PI). Group I animals, however, developed recognised symptoms of acute

Cultures obtained from the middle meatus have been used frequently in the past to direct therapy in patients with acute maxillary sinusitis. However, no convincing data have been published to indicate that middle meatal cultures accurately represent the bacterial flora within the maxillary sinus. The hypothesis of this experiment is that bacteria obtained by directed middle meatal cultures qualitatively and quantitatively correlate with cultures taken by maxillary sinus puncture. Acute sinusitis was induced by injecting 10(8) colony-forming units of bacteria directly into the maxillary sinuses
