[Arthropods as a cause of leisure sickness: ectoparasites].

Ectoparasites are a type of arthropod parasites that live on the body surface of their host. Many ectoparasitic infestations are associated with travel and leisure. Recognition of the specific symptoms of ectoparasitic infestations is important because of the hygienic and therapeutic consequences.

In silico investigation and experimental validation of pistagremic acid isolated from Pistacia integerrima against Rhipicephalus microplus and Sarcoptes scabiei.

Rhipicephalus microplus and Sarcoptes scabiei are major ectoparasites affecting both humans and animals, causing significant economic losses to the dairy and agricultural sectors. This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro and in silico efficacy of pistagremic acid (PA), a natural compound isolated from Pistacia integerrima, against these parasites. Different concentrations of the compound were tested using the adult immersion test (AIT) and larval packet test (LPT) to assess their in vitro effects on mites and various tick life stages. Molecular docking was conducted to examine the interaction

Molecular characterization and phylogenetic analysis of Babesia and Theileria spp. in Sardinian ruminants.

Tick-borne diseases (TBDs) caused by Theileria and Babesia spp. are common in tropical and subtropical regions. This study investigates the presence of Theileria and Babesia spp. in ruminants from a subtropical Mediterranean region (Sardinia, Italy), a hotspot for ticks infestations. A total of 141 blood samples from healthy and symptomatic ruminants (showing symptoms consistent with tick-borne disease) were screened using a polymerase chain reaction test based on the amplification of the 18 s rRNA fragment. A total of 19/50 sheep (38%), 34/43 bovine (79.1%), and 5/48 goats (10.4%) tested posi

Experimental evidence against transmission of Hepatozoon canis by Ixodes ricinus.

Hepatozoon canis is among the most widespread tick-borne protozoa infecting domestic and wild carnivores. Its distribution is related to the occurrence of its major vector, the brown dog tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus. However, the role of Ixodes ricinus as a vector of H. canis has been hypothesized. In the present study, the development of H. canis was investigated in I. ricinus and R. sanguineus nymphs collected from a naturally infested dog. All I. ricinus ticks examined (n=133) were negative by cytological examination at days 20, 30, and 90 post collection, although H. canis DNA was detecte

Development of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for detection of IgM antibodies to Babesia bigemina in cattle.

A crude antigenic preparation of Babesia bigemina was used to develop an ELISA for the detection of IgM antibodies. Optimal dilutions of the antigen, using positive and negative reference sera, were determined by checkerboard titrations. Negative sera from cattle imported from tick-free areas, serum samples collected from infected B. bigemina cattle were used to validate the test. The specificity was 94% and sensitivity of the Elisa 87.5%. Sera from 385 cattle deriving from areas free from tick-borne diseases, which were submitted to a preimmunization process, were screened by this technique.

Recommendations for sustainable control of cattle tick, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Canestrini, 1887) in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The control of the cattle tick, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, is an ongoing challenge for cattle producers in tropical and sub-tropical regions around the world. It is a robust parasite that transmits potentially fatal pathogens and can cause substantial damage to cattle in its own right. With a high fecundity and a life cycle with an off-host, free-living phase that can extend to around one year, R. microplus has a demonstrated capacity to both, evade treatment with acaricides and to acquire resistance to acaricides. The aim of this article is to design current best practice recommenda

Brazil's battle against Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus ticks: current strategies and future directions.

Ticks are parasitic arthropods that cause significant economic losses to livestock production worldwide. Although Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, the cattle tick, occurs throughout the Brazilian territory, there is no official program to control this tick, which is the vector of tick fever pathogens. We address the situation of R. (B.) microplus resistance to synthetic acaricides in Brazil, including cattle tick management; the status of tick resistance per Brazilian state; the history of resistance occurrence of different acaricides; multiple resistance occurrence; and the main strategie

Spatiotemporal heterogeneity of Rhipicephalus microplus resistance to chemical acaricides at intra-farm level: A case study using ivermectin.

The aim of this work was to analyse the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of Rhipicephalus microplus (Canestrini, 1888) (Acari: Ixodidae) resistance to chemical acaricides at intra-farm level under different environmental (favourable and unfavourable areas for tick development) and management (different schemes of acaricides applications) conditions using ivermectin as a model. The in vitro larval immersion test (LIT) was used to determine quantitatively the levels of resistance to ivermectin in the different populations and subpopulations of R. microplus analysed. Metagenomics of the midgut microbiome of Rhipicephalus microplus from China.

BACKGROUND: Ticks, which are ectoparasites of animals, may carry multiple pathogens. The cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus is an important bovine parasite in China. However, the midgut microbiome of R. microplus from China has not been characterized via metagenomic methods. METHODS: Rhipicephalus microplus were collected from cattle in the city of Changsha in Hunan province, China. The DNA of the midgut contents was extracted from fully engorged adult female R. microplus. A DNA library was constructed and sequenced using an Illumina HiSeq sequencing platform. SOAPdenovo software was used to

Mapping and monitoring tick (Acari, Ixodida) distribution, seasonality, and host associations in the United Kingdom between 2017 and 2020.

Tick-borne disease risk is intrinsically linked to the distribution of tick vector species. To assess risk and anticipate disease emergence, an understanding of tick distribution, host associations, and seasonality is needed. This can be achieved, to some extent, using passive surveillance supported by engagement with the public, animal health, and public health experts. The Tick Surveillance Scheme (TSS) collects data and maps tick distribution across the United Kingdom (UK). Between 2017 and 2020, 3720 tick records were received and 39 tick species were detected. Most records were acquired i

Metatranscriptomic profiling reveals diverse tick-borne bacteria, protozoans and viruses in ticks and wildlife from Australia.

Tick-borne zoonoses are emerging globally due to changes in climate and land use. While the zoonotic threats associated with ticks are well studied elsewhere, in Australia, the diversity of potentially zoonotic agents carried by ticks and their significance to human and animal health is not sufficiently understood. To this end, we used untargeted metatranscriptomics to audit the prokaryotic, eukaryotic and viral biomes of questing ticks and wildlife blood samples from two urban and rural sites in New South Wales, Australia. Ixodes holocyclus and Haemaphysalis bancrofti were the main tick speci

Old health risks in new places? An ecological niche model for I. ricinus tick distribution in Europe under a changing climate.

Climate change will likely have impacts on disease vector distribution. Posing a significant health threat in the 21st century, risk of tick-borne diseases may increase with higher annual mean temperatures and changes in precipitation. We modeled the current and future potential distribution of the Ixodes ricinus tick species in Europe. The Genetic Algorithm for Rule-set Prediction (GARP) was utilized to predict potential distributions of I. ricinus based on current (1990-2010 averages) and future (2040-2060 averages) environmental variables. A ten model best subset was created out of a possib

Survey of selected tick-borne diseases in dogs in Finland.

BACKGROUND: Due to climate changes during the last decades, ticks have progressively spread into higher latitudes in northern Europe. Although some tick borne diseases are known to be endemic in Finland, to date there is limited information with regard to the prevalence of these infections in companion animals. We determined the antibody and DNA prevalence of the following organisms in randomly selected client-owned and clinically healthy hunting dogs living in Finland: Ehrlichia canis (Ec), Anaplasma phagocytophilum (Ap), Borrelia burgdorferi (Bb) and Bartonella. METHODS: Anti-Ap, -Bb and -E

Expressed sequenced tags and new genes from the cattle tick, Boophilus microplus.

We used the expressed sequenced tags (ESTs) approach to study the genome of the cattle tick Boophilus microplus. One hundred and forty-two of our 234 unique ESTs were from genes not previously identified from ticks, mites or any other arachnids. The largest class of identified ESTs (29%) was from genes involved in transcription and translation. Ninety-one ESTs (39% of all ESTs) did not match any sequences in international databases; some of these may be specific to ticks. Thirteen percent of our ESTs were from ribosomal proteins and two ESTs were for genes implicated in resistance to pesticide

Computer simulation of Babesia bovis (Babes) and B. bigemina (Smith & Kilborne) transmission by Boophilus cattle ticks (Acari: Ixodidae).

A computer model was developed to simulate the processes involved in transmission of the cattle fever parasites Babesia bovis (Babes) and Babesia bigemina (Smith & Kilborne) between cattle and Boophilus ticks. The model of Babesia transmission was combined with a dynamic life history model for population dynamics of the tick vectors, Boophilus microplus (Canestrini) and B. annulatus (Say). Epidemiological parameters and relationships in the model include the reduction in fecundity of infected ticks, rate of transovarial transmission, effect of cattle type and inoculation rate on infectivity of

Transport of ixodid ticks and tick-borne pathogens by migratory birds.

Birds, particularly passerines, can be parasitized by Ixodid ticks, which may be infected with tick-borne pathogens, like Borrelia spp., Babesia spp., Anaplasma, Rickettsia/Coxiella, and tick-borne encephalitis virus. The prevalence of ticks on birds varies over years, season, locality and different bird species. The prevalence of ticks on different species depends mainly on the degree of feeding on the ground. In Europe, the Turdus spp., especially the blackbird, Turdus merula, appears to be most important for harboring ticks. Birds can easily cross barriers, like fences, mountains, glaciers,

Tick saliva in anti-tick immunity and pathogen transmission.

When feeding on vertebrate host ticks (ectoparasitic arthropods and potential vectors of bacterial, rickettsial, protozoal, and viral diseases) induce both innate and specific acquired host-immune reactions as part of anti-tick defenses. In a resistant host immune defense can lead to reduced tick viability, sometimes resulting in tick death. Tick responds to the host immune attack by secreting saliva containing pharmacologically active molecules and modulating host immune response. Tick saliva-effected immunomodulation at the attachment site facilitates both tick feeding and enhances the succe
