BACKGROUND: This study aims to compare the clinical efficacy and safety of traditional open surgery and radiofrequency ablation in the treatment of great saphenous varicose veins.
METHODS: A total of 177 patients with great saphenous varicose veins admitted to our hospital between January 2023 and December 2024 were retrospectively selected. According to the treatment methods, they were divided into the traditional open surgery group (TG, n = 85) and the radiofrequency ablation group (RG, n = 92). The surgical-related indicators, postoperative pain severity, quality of life score, incidence o

OBJECTIVES: Much attention has been given to prehospital blood use for trauma, but evidence is lacking for non-traumatic hemorrhage. Therefore, we sought to evaluate the epidemiology of patients receiving prehospital whole blood for nontraumatic hemorrhage.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study of patients receiving prehospital blood transfusions for non-traumatic hemorrhagic shock within two fire-based emergency medical services (EMS) systems, between February 20, 2024, and April 23, 2026. Patients were included if blood products were administered for a non-traumatic caus

OBJECTIVES: The effects of seizure control on outcomes in persons with dementia (PWD) remain unclear. Our study aimed to investigate the impact of seizure control on mortality, function, cognition, and mood among PWD.
METHODS: This longitudinal, multicenter study is based on 39 Alzheimer's disease centers (ADCs) in the United States from September 2005 to December 2021. PWD were grouped by seizure status into recurrent (seizures in the past year), remote (prior seizures but none in the past year), and no seizures (controls). The primary outcome was all-cause mortality among seizure groups. We

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) among inpatients in a hospital and analyze the rationality of their use.
METHODS: We analyzed the medication records of 1986 inpatients from January 2023 to June 2023, focusing on patients using PPIs under the "Internet + medical service" model. Additionally, we compared and analyzed the drug use patterns, including dosage form, dosage, medication frequency, average daily cost, and sales amount, between two groups: those treated before and after the implementation of the "Internet + medical service" model. BACKGROUND: The experience of expectant parenthood is commensurate of relative angst and nervousness albeit one of overall excitement and joy. However, when the pregnancy is regarded as high-risk, this experience changes dramatically for both parents. While literature on high-risk pregnancies is gaining traction, the focus is predominantly on the mother's experiences and therefore, a paucity exists in exploring the father's experiences of a high-risk pregnancy. This study aimed to determine the current extent of literature focusing on father's experiences of a high-risk pregnancy using a scopi

PURPOSE: Currently, there is no consensus on the treatment of distal radius fractures in the super-elderly population. The aim of this study was to evaluate the perioperative morbidities and the need for rehabilitation care after a distal radius fracture treated with locking plates among patients aged 85 years or older.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted in all patients aged 85 years or older who underwent open surgical treatment using a locking plate for an isolated distal radius fracture from January 2013 to December 2018 at a level 1 trauma center. The occurrence of minor complic

In critically ill patients, normal eye protection mechanisms, such as tear production, blinking, and keeping the eye closed, are impaired. In addition, many other factors related to patients' severe condition and treatment contribute to ocular surface disease. Reducing risk factors and proper eye care can have a significant impact on incidences of eye complications and patient quality of life after discharge from the intensive care unit (ICU). The aim of the study was to determine risk factors for ocular complication, especially those related to nursing care. The study was conducted in the ICU

BACKGROUND: The exact incidence of postoperative periprosthetic humeral fractures (PPHF) months or years after fracture-related implantation of a hemiprosthesis is unknown. The currently available literature is predominantly concerned with operative treatment approaches. As a rule, these involved older patients and severe fracture conditions so that severe complications and unsatisfactory healing results were described. This article presents an alternative conservative treatment approach which is discussed based on the results of treatment.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 2011 and 2016 a conser

Over the past several years, the proportion of all cases of AIDS in the United States among adult and adolescent women has more than tripled from 7% in 1985 to 23% in 1998. Information obtained in the present study suggests that care providers need to be aware of the unique life circumstances of women with AIDS, which may predispose them to a number of negative health and mental health outcomes. Charts of the first 100 women enrolled in an intensive home-based primary medical HMO for people with advanced HIV/AIDS were examined retrospectively for evidence of trauma. Results from a chart review

INTRODUCTION: Synchronized independent lung ventilation (SILV) is an effective mode of mechanical ventilation for treating both unilateral and bilateral pulmonary lesions. Oxygenation improves with an increase in the ventilation/perfusion ratio and also diminishes the risk of barotrauma. We describe our broad experience with this technique. Our main objective was to confirm whether SILV is able to improve the alveolar-arterial oxygen difference [P(A-a)O2] of patients with severe adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in whom conventional mechanical ventilation has not brought about improve

BACKGROUND: Survivorship after critical illness is often characterised by fragmented recovery and lingering cognitive, psychological, and physical impairments collectively described as post-intensive care syndrome. Current recovery frameworks and follow-up models remain inconsistently delivered, poorly standardised, and rarely address survivors' and families' need to make sense of the intensive care unit (ICU) experience in a transparent, inclusive, and sensitive way. The Critical Illness Survivorship Programme is proposed to humanise post-intensive care by integrating generative artificial in

PURPOSE: Approximately one in four adults aged ≥65 years experiences a fall each year, and over one-third of these events require medical care. Older adults are at higher risk of complications because of comorbidities. Most prior studies have focused on incidence rather than outcomes, and few have evaluated the association between age and traumatic brain injury (TBI) mortality. This study assessed risk factors and risk-adjusted mortality and morbidity among older adults with moderate or severe TBI.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of data from a single-center trauma registry. Incl

A scoping review was conducted using the Arksey and O'Malley framework to develop a comprehensive overview of how the experience of breathing pattern disorder (BPD) has been conceptualized and reported in the literature. The Applied Social Sciences Index and Abstracts (ASSIA), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Embase, Medline and PsycINFO electronic databases were searched from the earliest available reports until 13th May 2025. The reference lists of included reports were also screened for appropriate literature. Only reports relating to adults and published i

INTRODUCTION: Fragility fractures of the pelvis (FFP) are associated with loss of mobility and significant mortality in elderly patients. The purpose of this study was to assess the 60-day readmission rates following FFP and to identify what factors may predict readmission.
METHODS: Six hundred thirty-one patients over 65 years of age presenting for FFP to a level 1 trauma center between 2010 and 2022 were reviewed. The chi-square test of independence and logistic regression were performed to identify factors associated with readmission.
RESULTS: One hundred and thirty-six patients met inclu

BACKGROUND: Hip fractures are increasing as the U.S. population ages and result in significant morbidity, mortality, and cost. Despite guidelines recommending osteoporosis treatment after hip fracture, few patients receive treatment. To address this unmet need, our large, tertiary care, academic hospital initiated an inpatient osteoporosis treatment program with Zoledronic Acid (ZA) led by a single geriatrician co-managing patients with hip fracture admitted to the orthopedic trauma service. This study describes the program's implementation and preliminary data.
METHODS: A prospective cohort

This report is a case of a healed proximal intertrochanteric femur fracture nonunion in an ancient Nubian adult female, approximately 58 years old at the time of death, from the Tombos archaeological site in present day northern Sudan. Tombos was founded as an Egyptian colonial town during the New Kingdom Period (14001070 BC). The individual was radiocarbon dated to 1114-910 BC and also exhibited healed fractures of the left proximal humerus and ribs. There was shortening and mild atrophy of the right femur compared to the left; radiographs demonstrated a varus deformity of the proximal femur
