[Odontogenic cervical-facial cellulitis: report of 87 cases].

Cervical-facial cellulitis are infections of the cellular fatty spaces of the face and neck with a tendency towards locoregional extension, septic and thromboembolic complications that can affect the patient's vital and/or functional prognosis. The management is multidisciplinary including a medical component, surgical drainage associated with the treatment of the causal tooth. This is a retrospective study including 87 cases of odontogenic head and neck cellulitis hospitalized in the ENT and head and neck surgery department at Fattouma Bourguiba Monastir hospital over a period of 4 years betw

Cryptococcal osteomyelitis of the Zygomatic bone: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Disseminated cryptococcosis is a well-characterized complication in immunocompromised patients with cryptococcal pneumonia or meningitis; however, isolated cryptococcal osteomyelitis is a rare entity that occurs in approximately 5% of patients with cryptococcosis. Cryptococcal osteomyelitis in the head and neck region is extremely rare. To the best of our knowledge, no cases of cryptococcal osteomyelitis affecting only the zygomatic bone have been reported to date. CASE PRESENTATION: A 78-year-old man without other comorbidities presented with progressive swelling of the right che

Utilization of emergency department computed tomography and otolaryngology consultation in the diagnosis of pediatric peritonsillar abscess.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether obtaining a computed tomography (CT) scan in the emergency department (ED) is predictive of peritonsillar abscess (PTA) in the pediatric population, and to evaluate for clinical characteristics that may suggest whether a CT is beneficial in the diagnosis of pediatric PTA. METHODS: Single-institution retrospective chart review at Rush University Hospitals. Study included pediatric patients, aged 17 or younger, who presented to the ED with suspected PTA over a 6-year period. Patients received a neck CT and/or an official otolaryngology consultation. Tracheal intubation in patients with odentogenous abscesses and reduced mouth opening.

BACKGROUND: Odentogenous abscesses with involvement of the facial or cervical spaces can be life-threatening and often have to be drained under general anaesthesia. Trismus and swelling can make intubation with a Macintosh laryngoscope difficult or even impossible. However, indirect laryngoscopy has been successful when conventional direct laryngoscopy has failed. Therefore, we evaluated the efficacy of the Glidescope laryngoscope in patients with odentogenous abscesses and the improvement in mouth opening after neuromuscular block. METHODS: After approval of the ethics committee, 100 patient

Evaluation of extensions of sinonasal mass lesions by computerized tomography scan.

INTRODUCTION: Cross-sectional imaging has had a significant impact on the management of the sinonasal malignancy. Staging of these lesions has been closely monitored by dependence on computerized tomography (CT) scan and now in small proportion with MRI. The objective of the study was to evaluate the reliability of CT scan in assessing the extensions of the sinonasal mass lesions and their impact on tumor staging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All cases of sinonasal lesions were reviewed retrospectively from June 2001 to May 2006 (five years) at KMIO, Bangalore. Only those cases that had CT scan rep

Role of angiotensin II in cardiovascular disease therapeutic implications of more than a century of research.

INTRODUCTION: Complications following dental extraction include the development of a dry socket, pain, swelling, infection, trismus, pocket formation in the adjacent teeth, or absence of healing. The material and technique used for suturing vastly influence the success or failure of a suture. The present study aimed to evaluate and compare the postoperative pain, swelling, and distal probing depth of the mandibular second molar following the placement of interrupted suture (IS) and vertical mattress suture (VMS) after extraction of impacted third molars. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The present spli

Bi-allelic Mutations in KLHL7 Cause a Crisponi/CISS1-like Phenotype Associated with Early-Onset Retinitis Pigmentosa.

Crisponi syndrome (CS)/cold-induced sweating syndrome type 1 (CISS1) is a very rare autosomal-recessive disorder characterized by a complex phenotype with high neonatal lethality, associated with the following main clinical features: hyperthermia and feeding difficulties in the neonatal period, scoliosis, and paradoxical sweating induced by cold since early childhood. CS/CISS1 can be caused by mutations in cytokine receptor-like factor 1 (CRLF1). However, the physiopathological role of CRLF1 is still poorly understood. A subset of CS/CISS1 cases remain yet genetically unexplained after CRLF1 s

How effective is collagen resorbable membrane placement after partially impacted mandibular third molar surgery on postoperative morbidity? A prospective randomized comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Collagen membranes have some benefits include promoting wound healing through isolation, clot stabilization, wound stability, and hemostasis, enhancing primary wound coverage through its chemotactic ability to attract fibroblasts, and augmenting flap thickness by providing a collagenous scaffold. The purpose of this study was to compare primary and secondary healing and collagen membrane-based primary healing after surgical removal of partial impacted mandibular third molars, evaluating the incidence of postoperative complications and analyzing the swelling, mouth opening, and pain

Osteochondroma of the mandibular condyle: surgical excision followed by occlusal stabilization.

Osteochondroma of the mandibular condyle in adults can be treated by surgical excision, condylectomy followed by costochondral graft or orthognathic surgery. Such complex treatment plan may not be appropriate for patients with old age, affected with chronic osteochondroma of the condyle. In this clinical report, we present a patient with osteochondroma of the condyle treated by surgical excision. The patient's postoperative occlusion was a contraindication for orthognathic surgery because of the severe abrasion of the teeth and the chronic compensation of the dentition to the deviated mandible

Hemimasticatory spasm associated with localized scleroderma and facial hemiatrophy.

OBJECTIVES: To report a case and discuss the mechanism of hemimasticatory spasm. DESIGN: Case report. PATIENT: A 37-year-old woman had a 3-year history of involuntary spasms of the right masseter muscle in association with localized scleroderma and facial hemiatrophy. Electrophysiological studies revealed a normal blink reflex. However, the masseter reflex and silent period were absent on the affected side. Distal latency and compound muscle action potential of the masseter nerve were normal. Needle electromyography demonstrated irregular bursts of motor unit potentials similar to those desc

Tetanus - a lethal and neglected infectious disease.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Tetanus, caused by Clostridium tetani's toxin, remains a deadly disease, particularly in tropical regions. Generalized tetanus, the most severe form, leads to painful muscle spasms due to tetanospasmin binding to motor neurons. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial, especially in developing countries with limited vaccination access, highlighting the importance of routine immunization and addressing healthcare challenges in low-resource settings. CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old male with a history of alcohol abuse presented with classic tetanus symptoms, inclu

Effect of a Polynucleotide-Hyaluronic Acid Gel on Mandibular Third-Molar Extraction Discomfort.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pain, swelling, and transient trismus commonly follow impacted mandibular third-molar surgery. Hyaluronic acid (HA) can modulate early inflammation and support soft-tissue repair, while polynucleotides (PN) may further enhance fibroblast activity. This study evaluated whether an intrasocket PN-HA gel improves early postoperative outcomes versus standard care. METHODS: Single-center, retrospective split-mouth study in adults undergoing bilateral removal of partially impacted mandibular third molars. One socket received PN-HA gel (Regenfast © , 5 mL) before suturing (T

Outcomes of conservative antibiotic therapy in pediatric peritonsillar abscesses: a retrospective observational study.

UNLABELLED: Peritonsillar abscess (PTA) is a common deep neck infection in adolescents and young adults, traditionally treated surgically. This study evaluates the efficacy and safety of conservative management with antibiotics for PTA in pediatric patients. We designed a retrospective observational study at a tertiary care center to analyze the outcome of children under the age of 18 years managed conservatively for PTA from 2004 to 2014. The main outcome was primary treatment failure, defined as the need for surgery or complications within 2 weeks. Secondary outcomes included secondary failu

Dual Application of Patient-Specific Occlusion-Based Positioning Guide and Fibular Cutting Guide for Accurate Reconstruction of Segmental Mandibular Defect.

In this study, the authors introduced a dual application of patient-specific occlusion-based positioning guide and fibular cutting guide to obtain ideal occlusal relationship and mandibular contour in patients undergoing mandibular reconstruction. A retrospective review was performed in 21 patients who underwent mandibular reconstruction with a fibular osteocutaneous free flap. Using computed tomography and intraoral scanning data, fibular cutting guide and occlusion-based positioning guide were simulated in a modeling software and 3-dimensionally printed. Both guides were applied in 9 patient
