Oral ulcers represent a comprehensive group of lesions. Because they are both common and painful, the dentist and physician are frequently consulted for diagnosis and treatment. The pathogenesis, clinical appearance, and suggested treatment modalities for the most common ulcerations are presented. Knowledge of the classification of oral ulcers will aid in proper diagnosis and direct the clinician toward appropriate therapy. In many cases, only palliative care can be offered, but symptoms can often be ameliorated.

Ulcerative colitis in children has been seldom described in Chile. The cases of a 14 year old girl and a 10 year old boy with this disease are presented. Both had diarrhea for more than two months--which was continuous in the first case and intermittent in the other one--, bloody stools, weight loss, anemia and abdominal pain. Bacteriological and parasitological examination of stools were negative. Diagnosis of ulcerative colitis was based on barium enema, which showed mucosal ulceration and loss of the normal claustral pattern, rectosigmoidoscopy, that revealed hyperemia, friability and erosi…

Ulcerations are common occurrences in the mouth. Causes include physical trauma, radiation, chemical injury, and microbial infection (bacterial, viral, and fungal). Some ulcerations, such as recurrent aphthous stomatitis, Behçet's syndrome, and erythema multiforme, are of uncertain etiology, whereas others (eg, pemphigus, pemphigoid) are apparently of immunologic origin. Malignant neoplasms also may present as ulcerations. Because the natural history and treatment varies with the diagnosis, the practitioner should become familiar with the clinical appearance of the various types of ulcerations…

Ulcerative keratitis comprises an important proportion of presenting ocular complaints in small animals. Because of its high frequency, corneal ulceration may not routinely stimulate the clinical concern for rigorous diagnosis, attentive management, and aversion of potential complications that it merits. Only by maintaining an appreciation for the pathologic processes at work during corneal injury and repair can busy clinicians competently diagnose, successfully treat, and forestall the complications of corneal ulceration.

Since esophagitis is increasing in frequency, the authors reviewed case histories of patients with this disorder. The importance of radiographic examination of the stomach and duodenum in patients with esophagitis (heartburn) is stressed.

The clinical symptoms of ulcerative colitis are described and three main points are emphasized: 1. The importance of associated diseases of ulcerative colitis (hepatic involvement, arthropathy, skin affections, uveitis and thyroiditis). 2. The importance of psychopathological conflicts in the pathogenesis and treatment of the disease. 3. The necessity to have a well-balanced team of pediatricians, pediatric surgeons, psychologists or psychotherapists, pathologists, social workers and stoma therapists for optimal therapy.

One case of an ulcerating paraffinoma of the male mammary gland and another of the penis are reported. The former is the third and the latter the eighth of its kind described in the literature. Psychopathological features were associated with both cases, and additionally impotence with the latter. The treatment of paraffinomas is surgical. Subcutaneous mastectomy was performed on the mammary gland, leaving a high proportion of the affected skin in situ. Recovery was slow and the cosmetic end result not satisfactory. Re-injection of paraffin later required total excision of the entire anterior …
