Does the presence of hydronephrosis on preoperative axial CT imaging predict worse outcomes for patients undergoing nephroureterectomy for upper-tract urothelial carcinoma?

OBJECTIVES: Hydronephrosis at the time of diagnosis of bladder cancer is associated with advanced disease and is a predictor of poorer outcomes. There is, however, limited information addressing whether a similar relationship exists for upper-tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC). We investigate the prognostic impact of hydronephrosis on preoperative axial imaging on clinical outcomes after radical nephroureterectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The records for 106 patients with UTUC who underwent radical nephroureterectomy at 2 medical centers were reviewed. Preoperative computed tomography (CT) imag

Radiographic imaging and urologic decision making in the management of renal and ureteral calculi.

Without question, significant changes, and for the most part significant advances, have been made in the management of patients with urolithiasis during the past decade. The newer therapeutic measures have generally made it easier for patients to be treated, but the decision-making process for the urologist has become more complex. In the past, the issue whether to follow a patient with a stone or to intervene with surgery or transurethral cystoscopic basketing was decided based on well-established guidelines that had developed over many years. Today, the indications for intervention appear to

[Rigid ureteroscopy. Apropos of 88 cases].

Rigid ureteroscopy has become a common tool for the diagnosis and management of several diseases of the upper urinary tract. Between April 1990 and April 1996, 92 ureteroscopy procedures were performed in 88 patients in the B Urology Department of Avicennes hospital for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. The commonest therapeutic procedure was stone manipulation (72 cases). The overall success rate was 90.8% (Distal ureter: 89.6%, mid ureter: 80%, lumbar ureter: 100%) and the complication rate was 4%. Therapeutic ureteroscopy was also used to dry ureterovaginal fistula (4 cases) and ureteral

Procedural factors outweigh anatomical morphometry in predicting postoperative pain following retrograde intrarenal surgery.

PURPOSE: Postoperative pain affects 23-45% of RIRS patients, but predictive factors remain unclear. This study evaluated whether anatomical morphometric assessment predicts postoperative pain when controlling for procedural variables in patients with normal upper tract anatomy, and identified which factors most significantly influence pain after RIRS. METHODS: This prospective single-center study included 420 consecutive patients undergoing RIRS (September 2024-May 2025). After exclusions, 320 patients completed three-week follow-up. Forty-five anatomical parameters and procedural variables (

Hyperoxaluria by the AGXT gene: a case report.

BACKGROUND: This report details a case of AGXT gene mutation in a male patient, 9 years 6 months old, Portuguese ethnicity, with history of nephrocalcinosis and recurrent nephrolithiasis in childhood, which progressed to chronic kidney disease. It illustrates the diagnostic and therapeutic implications of identifying an AGXT c.33dup (p.Lys12Glnfs156) variant in a patient with primary hyperoxaluria type 1. Recognizing nonresponsive genotypes prevents unnecessary prolonged treatment and allows earlier evaluation for advanced therapies such as liver transplantation or RNA interference therapy. C

Efficacy and Safety of a Novel <5 mm Ureteral Dilation Balloon Catheter in Holmium Laser Surgery for Ureteral Calculi with Physiological Narrowing: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: The "difficult ureter" specifically denotes narrow and tortuous ureters typically requiring two-stage surgery. We first proposed combining a visible ureteral dilation balloon catheter with a holmium laser to treat ureteral calculi in patients with ureteral stenosis. METHODS: A prospective, multicenter, randomized, open-label, and controlled study enrolled 60 ureteral calculi patients with ureteral stricture from July 2021 to July 2023. Patients were randomly assigned to either first-stage ureteroscopic lithotripsy with direct visualization balloon dilation (DVBD + FUS) or dilati

Efficacy and Safety of Pneumatic Lithotripsy for Ureteric Stones: A Retrospective Analysis From Sudan.

Introduction Ureteric stone management has undergone a transformation since the advent of different types of lithotripters. Although holmium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser lithotripsy has been considered the gold standard of choice for several centers, it is limited in availability in underdeveloped/low-resource areas. Pneumatic lithotripsy (PL) is still a relatively inexpensive and widely available modality. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of PL as an alternative to laser lithotripsy in low-income settings. Methods Retrospective data from 215 patients tre

Right Ventricular Volume Overload Mimicking Pulmonary Embolism: A Case of Intraoperative Fluid Absorption-Induced Ventricular Interdependence.

BACKGROUND Ventricular interdependence - mediated by shared pericardial and septal mechanics - can precipitate biventricular dysfunction during acute right ventricular (RV) volume overload. RV dilation impairs left ventricular (LV) compliance through diastolic constraint, elevating pulmonary pressures and triggering a self-perpetuating cycle of cardiopulmonary compromise. This hemodynamic cascade generates echocardiographic signs indistinguishable from pulmonary embolism (PE). CASE REPORT A 75-year-old woman with hypertension and diabetes developed acute hypoxia, tachycardia (110/min), and tac
