OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy and safety of a novel minimally invasive design for treating bulky vesical calculi and large benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) simultaneously.
METHODS: 76 patients with large bladder stones (>4 cm) and large BPH (≥50 cm³) were treated from August 2008 to January 2011. 38 patients (group 1) underwent transurethral cystolithotripsy followed by transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), 38 patients (group 2) received percutaneous cystolithotripsy within a laparoscopic entrapment bag and TURP by two surgeons simultaneously. 72 patients were followed up f

OBJECTIVE: To review the role of α-blockers in various urological conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia, overactive bladder, chronic prostatitis, and erectile dysfunction and as expulsive treatment of distal ureteral stones.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We reviewed the latest scientific evidence in all the fields mentioned above, performing a critical analysis.
CONCLUSION: α-blockers are now considered first-line treatment in lower urinary tract symptoms secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia, but the indications go beyond, and are able to improve, alone or in combination with other dr

An uretereo-colic anastomosis in children is performed in three occasions: 1) The trans-intestinal cutaneous ureterostomy (Bricker) has a low rate of complications concerning ureterocolic anastomosis. Nevertheless, occurrence of pyelonephrites may oblige to perform an anti-reflux procedure. 2) Implantation of ureters in the intestinal segment of an augmentation colocystoplastys in unusual; when necessary, this type of implantation is safe because colon is appropriate for an antireflux procedure. 3) Ureterocolic diversion (Coffey) is quite comfortable for patients. Risks of renal failure and of

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence rate of upper urinary tract calculi in Saudi Arabia is one of the highest globally. Bilateral renal stone management is an option but is still controversial.
METHODOLOGY: The study was a retrospective study, including 31 patients with bilateral renal or ureteric stones who underwent bilateral same-session ureterorenoscopy (BSS-URS). The data collected included age, gender, body mass index (BMI), stone burden bilaterally, operative time bilaterally, hospital stay, stone location, type of anesthesia, stone history, renal anomaly as well as pre- and postoperative JJ

We evaluated the clinical, radiological and metabolic features of 162 children with urolithiasis or microlithiasis who had been referred to our pediatric nephrology clinics between 1998 and 2008 with suspected urolithiasis. The medical histories of these children (78 girls, 84 boys), who ranged in age from 2 months to 16 years (mean age 5.59 +/- 0.35 years), were reviewed retrospectively for clinical and metabolic features of urinary tract calculi. Urinary tract infections (UTI) were present in 45.9% of the cases. The most common presenting symptoms were flank pain or restlessness (25.3%) and

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Routine imaging following ureteroscopy for treatment of renal/ureteral calculi continues to be a topic of debate. However, with the increasing focus on healthcare costs and quality, judicious use of diagnostic imaging to optimize outcomes while minimizing resource utilization is a priority. We sought to identify post-ureteroscopy imaging practices among experienced urologists.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A REDcap questionnaire was sent to urologists in North America. The questionnaire surveyed demographic data, clinical volume, and imaging preferences post-ureteroscopy. Add

Introduction Radiolucent urinary calculi, primarily uric acid and struvite stones, pose a diagnostic challenge due to their indistinct appearance on plain radiographs. Differentiating between these two types is essential, as they require markedly different therapeutic strategies. This study evaluates the combined utility of Hounsfield units (HU) from non-contrast computed tomography (NCCT) and urine pH values as non-invasive predictors of stone composition in radiolucent calculi. We hypothesized that the combination of HU and urine pH can accurately differentiate between uric acid and struvite

PURPOSE: To review the computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging manifestations of acute and chronic renal infections that may mimic malignancy and to provide useful tips to establish an imaging diagnosis.
CONCLUSION: Acute and chronic bacterial pyelonephritis are usually readily diagnosed clinically and on imaging when the diagnosis is suspected based upon clinical presentation. When unsuspected, focal, extensive or mass-like, acute and chronic bacterial pyelonephritis may mimic infiltrative tumours such as urothelial cell carcinoma (UCC), lymphoma, and metastatic disease. Infection

The amino acid gamma-carboxyglutamic acid (Gla) has been previously detected in the vitamin K-requiring blood clotting factors, proteins of calcified vertebrate tissue, renal tissue, plasma protein C, ectopic calcifications, and calcium-containing renal calculi. This paper reports the presence of Gla in the EDTA-soluble, non-dialyzable material recovered from human pediatric bladder stones containing calcium salts. In bladder stones composed of calcium oxalate, uric acid and ammonium acid urate, 73 Gla residues per 1,000 amino acid residues were detected. Bladder stones composed of calcium oxa

Backgrounds: In the renal intrarenal stone surgery (RIRS) procedure, ureteral access sheath (UAS) is still used in the majority of surgeries to both protect the flexible ureteroscope (FURS) and reduce intrarenal pressure. ClearPETRA is a new UAS that has an integrated aspiration port. We aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes and effectiveness of Aspiration-Assisted UAS (ClearPETRA) in the RIRS procedure. Methods: One thousand six hundred twenty patients who underwent RIRS between January 2021 and January 2024 were evaluated retrospectively and 512 patients were included in the study. Accordi

We aim to compare perioperative outcomes, postoperative stone-free rate, complications, and predictors of treatment success in patients undergoing endourological treatment of bladder stones using laser versus mechanical energy. We performed a prospective multicenter analysis from the Bladder Lithiasis Assessment of Surgical Treatment (BLAST) registry. Patients undergoing endourological treatment for bladder stones between May 2025 and September 2025 were included and stratified according to the energy source used for stone fragmentation: laser or mechanical energy, reflecting a pragmatic, cate

BACKGROUND: Bladder cancer is usually of urothelial origin. Locoregional metastases to the bladder may occur. Distant metastases to the bladder are rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a woman in her eighties diagnosed with breast cancer (infiltrating lobular carcinoma). Three years after her treatment (surgery and radiotherapy), she was referred to the department of urology with macroscopic haematuria and night sweats. She was diagnosed with kidney stones based on the results from CT scans, urine cytology and cystoscopy. A few months after the urological evaluation, the patient had increasing

AIM: To define treatment selection criteria for patients with bladder cancer combined with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 2006 and 2015, 1148 patients were treated for bladder cancer and 3368 patients for BPH. Among them, 258 (22.5%) patients had both bladder cancer and BPH. 113 (11.6%) patients had indications for surgical treatment of both diseases. In this group, 18 (13.5%) patients also had bladder stones. Only 2 (1.6%) patients had tumor invading the muscle wall, while the remaining patients had non-muscle invasive bladder cancer.
RESULTS: In 18% of p

The quincentenary of Ambroise Paré's birth celebrates a man who rose from a humble origin to become the leading surgeon of the Renaissance. Now remembered as a celebrated war surgeon, especially for his gentle treatment of gunshot wounds, it is generally forgotten that Paré also treated children and wrote about them. Despite his little schooling, Paré was appointed as the Head of the French College of Surgeons in 1567. Paré's contributions to child health include conservative management of childhood deformities, such as clubfoot and scoliosis. He also gave descriptions of conjoined twins and i
