Advantage of vacuum assisted closure on healing of wound associated with omentoplasty after abdominoperineal excision: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Primary closure of the perineum with drainage after abdominoperineal excision of the rectum for carcinoma, is widely accepted. However hematoma, perineal abscess and re-operation are significantly more frequent after primary closure than after packing of the perineal cavity. Those complications are frequently related to the patients' clinical antecedent (i.e radiotherapy, diabetes, smoking). CASE PRESENTATION: In the present report, vacuum assisted drainage was used after abdominoperineal excision for carcinoma in the very first step due to intraoperative gross septic contaminatio…

[Vacuum assisted closure for the treatment of sternal wound infections -- rapid infection control and bridging to reconstructive surgery].

Vacuum Assisted Closure (V.A.C.) is a sound strategy to control severe post-sternotomy infection. Secondary re-wiring of the sternal bone or reconstructive surgery may be required later to achieve complete wound closure. Ten patients with severe sternal bone infection underwent initial V.A.C. therapy and delayed surgery for wound closure. Complete wound healing was achieved in all cases. As a case report we describe a patient with right-sided mastectomy and irradiation for breast cancer, who developed severe post-sternotomy infection and sternal bone necrosis following CABG. A combination of V…

To excise or to sample the mammographic target: what is the goal of stereotactic 11-gauge vacuum-assisted breast biopsy?

OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to determine whether complete percutaneous excision rather than sampling of the mammographic target conveys any significant advantage or disadvantage at stereotactic 11-gauge vacuum-assisted biopsy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of 788 consecutive solitary lesions in which the mammographic target was excised (n = 466) or sampled (n = 322) at stereotactic 11-gauge vacuum-assisted biopsy. Medical records and histologic findings were reviewed to determine the frequency of sparing surgery, discordance, histologic underestimation, …

[Extraperitoneal transabdominal vacuum drainage of the parametrial cavity and suprapubic drainage of the urinary bladder after radical hysterectomy].

Parametral cavity drainage was performed by the Penrose method after Wertheim's operation. In 14.4% of the patients inflammations were observed. After the introduction of extraperitoneal transabdominal vacuum drainage, the percentage of such complications decreased to 5%. In the previously performed transurethral urinary bladder drainage, the authors found uroinfections in 42.6% of the operated patients, whereas following the suprapubic drainage, urine samples remained bacteriologically clear, with less than 100,000 germs per 1 ml. In only one patient with suprapubic drainage, salt accumulated…

Intrapartum Ultrasound in Vacuum Operative Delivery: A Comprehensive Review and Proposal of the Novel Ultrasound Flexion Point Method.

Operative vaginal delivery (OVD) via vacuum extraction is a fundamental component of modern obstetric management, yet it carries specific risks of failure and maternal-fetal complications, such as cup detachment, cephalohematoma, and intracranial hemorrhage. The success and safety of the procedure rely heavily on the correct application of the vacuum cup over the "flexion point" of the fetal head. Traditional identification of this landmark via digital examination is often hindered by caput succedaneum and cranial molding, leading to high rates of diagnostic error, particularly in dystocic lab…

Assessment of Low-Dose rhBMP-2 and Vacuum Plasma Treatments on Titanium Implants for Osseointegration and Bone Regeneration.

This study evaluated the effects of low-dose recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) coating in combination with vacuum plasma treatment on titanium implants, aiming to enhance osseointegration and bone regeneration while minimizing the adverse effects associated with high-dose rhBMP-2. In vitro analyses demonstrated that plasma treatment increased surface energy, promoting cell adhesion and proliferation. Additionally, it facilitated sustained rhBMP-2 release by enhancing protein binding to the implant surface. In vivo experiments using the four-beagle mandibular defect model…

The effect of vacuum assisted socket suspension on prospective, community-based falls by users of lower limb prostheses.

Individuals with lower limb amputation are at increased risk of falling compared to age-matched peers. The purpose of this study was to quantify the effect of socket suspension on the risk of falling, by comparing prospectively tracked falls between a group of participants that used vacuum assisted socket suspension (VASS) and a group that did not use this system. Fifteen current users of VASS and 12 non-VASS users received an email every two weeks for one year, with a link to an online survey that asked whether they fell (i.e., "unintentionally came to rest on a lower surface") or stumbled (i…
