Orthostatic hypotension acutely impairs executive functions in Parkinson's disease.

Orthostatic hypotension is a frequent non-motor symptom of Parkinson's disease, with negative prognostic role on cognitive functions. Here we measured the acute effects of orthostatic hypotension on executive functions in Parkinson's disease patients devoid of hypertension, carotid artery stenosis, and significant chronic cerebrovascular pathology. Measurements were carried out during regular visits in outpatient setting. Twenty-eight Parkinson's disease patients were recruited and studied along scheduled outpatient visits. They were divided into two groups (n = 14 each) based on the presence

[5-year course of dyslexia – Persistence, sex effects, performance in reading and spelling, and school-related success].

OBJECTIVE: The study examines the 5-year course of children with dyslexia with regard to their sex. Furthermore, the study investigates the impact of dyslexia on the performance in reading and spelling skills and school-related success. METHOD: A group of 995 6- to 16-year-olds were examined at the initial assessment. Part of the initial sample was then re-examined after 43 and 63 months. The diagnosis of dyslexia was based on the double discrepancy criterion using a standard deviation of 1.5. Though they had no intellectual deficits, the children showed a considerable discrepancy between the

Learning to read upside-down: a study of perceptual expertise and its acquisition.

Reading is an expert visual and ocular motor function, learned mainly in a single orientation. Characterizing the features of this expertise can be accomplished by contrasts between reading of normal and inverted text, in which perceptual but not linguistic factors are altered. Our goal was to examine this inversion effect in healthy subjects reading text, to derive behavioral and ocular motor markers of perceptual expertise in reading, and to study these parameters before and after training with inverted reading. Seven subjects engaged in a 10-week program of 30 half-hour sessions of reading

An alternating treatment comparison of minimal and maximal opposition sound selection in Turkish phonological disorders.

A single-subject alternating treatment design in combination with a staggered multiple baseline model across subjects was implemented with two 6:0 year-old girls, monozygotic twins, who were referred to a university clinic for evaluation and treatment. The treatment programme was structured according to variants of minimal pair contrast treatment in which the target sounds and their oppositions were selected according to either minimal or maximal opposition (including major-class differences) contrast treatments to evaluate which of the sound selection strategy would result in better learning.

Naming problems do not reflect a second independent core deficit in dyslexia: double deficits explored.

The double deficit hypothesis states that naming speed problems represent a second core deficit in dyslexia independent from a phonological deficit. The current study investigated the main assumptions of this hypothesis in a large sample of well-diagnosed dyslexics. The three main findings were that (a) naming speed was consistently related only to reading speed; (b) phonological processing speed and naming speed loaded on the same factor, and this factor contributed strongly to reading speed; and (c) although general processing speed was involved in speeded naming of visual items, it did not

The role of autonomic arousal in feelings of familiarity.

Subjective feelings of familiarity associated with a stimulus tend to be strongest when specific information about the previous encounter with the stimulus is difficult to retrieve (e.g., the butcher-on-the-bus phenomenon; [Mandler, G. (1980). Recognizing: The judgment of previous occurrence. Psychological Review, 87, 252-271.]). When a stimulus has been encountered previously and the circumstances of the encounter cannot be recollected, additional cognitive resources may be directed toward recollection processes; this resource allocation is accompanied by autonomic arousal [Dawson, M. Changes in speech production associated with alphabet supplementation.

PURPOSE: This study examined the effect of alphabet supplementation (AS) on temporal and spectral features of speech production in individuals with cerebral palsy and dysarthria. METHOD: Twelve speakers with dysarthria contributed speech samples using habitual speech and while using AS. One hundred twenty listeners orthographically transcribed speech samples. Differences between habitual and AS speech were examined for intelligibility, rate, word duration, vowel duration, pause duration, pause frequency, vowel space, and first and second formant frequency (F1 and F2) values for corner vowels.

Selective impairment of sadness and disgust recognition in abstinent ecstasy users.

Previous data have suggested that ecstasy use may affect cognitive functions. The relationship between ecstasy use and emotion recognition remains largely unknown. This study reports the findings on the neuropsychological effects of ecstasy use on recognition of basic human emotions among 100 abstinent ecstasy users, along with 100 demographically matched nonusers. Recognition of both facial and prosodic emotions was studied. In addition, neuropsychological predictors of emotion recognition for abstinent ecstasy users were examined. The results showed that abstinent ecstasy users were impaired

Accuracy and speed of orthographic processing in persons with developmental dyslexia.

A group of 39 persons (20 male and 19 female, 11.0 to 32.5 yr.) with developmental dyslexia and 42 controls (21 male and 21 female, 11.2 to 32.3 years) were compared on computerized tests of sight word reading, nonword decoding, and spelling recognition. The subjects with developmental dyslexia performed significantly slower and less accurately than controls on all tasks. Further, the effect size of the group differences was larger for the older group. Within-group analyses showed a significant difference by age group on accuracy. Only the control group showed a significant age difference betw

The effect of target-selection strategy on phonological learning.

In this study, 48 children with moderate or severe delays in phonological ability received treatment for four phonemes, selected in accordance with either traditional or nontraditional target-selection criteria. Children who received treatment for phonemes that are early developing and associated with greater productive phonological knowledge showed greater progress toward acquisition of the target sounds than did children who received treatment for late-developing phonemes that were associated with little or no productive phonological knowledge. Between-group differences in generalization lea

A connectionist approach to making the predictability of English orthography explicit to at-risk beginning readers: evidence for alternative, effective strategies.

A case is made (and illustrated with empirical data with children) for connectionist models that are not only computationally explicit but also instructionally explicit. First-graders (N = 128) at the bottom of their classes in reading (average 11.5 percentile on nationally normed tests) participated in a 3-layer intervention. In the first layer, kept constant for all treatment groups, the alphabet principle was taught, making functional spelling units and alternations explicit. In the second layer, which varied systematically across treatment groups, children received different kinds of tutor

Episodic and semantic memory in early versus late onset Alzheimer's disease.

The aim of this study was to replicate and extend previous work demonstrating selective impairment of semantic, but not episodic, memory in late versus early onset Alzheimer's disease (AD). Measures of episodic and semantic memory were administered to 12 pairs of patients; early (less than or equal to 62) and late (greater than or equal to 68) onset pairs were matched on dementia severity and education. As hypothesized, the groups did not differ on the three episodic memory measures but did on two of three semantic memory measures. In conjunction with prior research, these findings indicate th

Reading in callosal agenesis.

It has been suggested that deficits in explicit phonological processing are causal in developmental dyslexia. Deficits in such skills have been reported in developmental phonological dyslexia, though not in developmental surface dyslexia. The reading performance of two children with callosal agenesis, who have been previously shown to have impairments on rhyming tasks, are reported. Neither child is dyslexic in the traditional sense, since word reading levels are appropriate for age. However, both children have impaired development of the phonological reading route despite normal lexical skill

Implicit learning seems to come naturally for children with autism, but not for children with specific language impairment: Evidence from behavioral and ERP data.

UNLABELLED: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and specific language impairment (SLI) are two neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by deficits in verbal and nonverbal communication skills. These skills are thought to develop largely through implicit-or automatic-learning mechanisms. The aim of the current paper was to investigate the role of implicit learning abilities in the atypical development of communication skills in ASD and SLI. In the current study, we investigated Response Times (RTs) and Event Related Potentials (ERPs) during implicit learning on a Serial Reaction Time (SRT) task i

Pure topographical disorientation in novel environments without anterograde amnesia: a case study.

Topographical disorientation (TD) in novel environments is considered to be a part of anterograde amnesia. A 56-year-old woman presented with pure TD only in novel environments following limbic encephalitis. She could not remember directions inside the hospital on weekly outpatient visits; however, her verbal and visual anterograde memories were normal. In the test of learning photographs of scenes, faces, and objects, only her scores for landscapes were worse than those in healthy controls. These findings suggested that her TD specific to landscapes and directions in novel environments was ca

Building a neurocognitive profile of thought disorder in schizophrenia using a standardized test battery.

A core symptom of schizophrenia is thought disorder (TD). The cognitive abilities of semantic processing and executive function are argued to be etiologically linked to TD. However, there has been no comprehensive investigation of neurocognition in TD to date. The neurocognitive profile of 58 schizophrenia patients and 48 healthy controls was examined using the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery and the D-KEFS Color-Word Interference Test. TD patients performed more poorly than non-TD patients on the cognitive domains of Verbal Learning and Inhibition, reflective of semantic and executive fun…

Developmental profile of patients with maple syrup urine disease.

The progress of nine maple syrup urine disease patients (eight classical, one possible variant) was reviewed to look for similarities in developmental patterns. A consistent developmental profile of stronger Verbal than Performance IQ and lower than familially expected IQ was seen. Younger age at diagnosis was associated with a milder neonatal course. Those who were asymptomatic or suffered mild complications in the newborn period have higher IQs than children experiencing moderate or severe complications. Children with asymptomatic or mild neonatal course also required less special education
