[The acute vestibular paralysis (author's transl)].

Acute vestibular paralysis may not be considered as a nosologic entity but as a syndrome. Symptomatology (vertigo, spontaneous and provoked vestibular nystagmus, absence of cochlear signs) shows an uniform picture. The results of the caloric test as well as the nystagmic responses induced by galvanic stimulation and the development of central vestibular compensation however indicate that the site of the lesion is not only confined to the labyrinth but may also occur at the level of the peripheral neuron or even the vestibular nuclei. Etiology and pathology are still vague. Our own clinical obs

Vestibular hyperreactivity and hyperventilation after whiplash injury.

Vestibular, oculomotor and respiratory tests were performed on 32 patients after whiplash injury caused by a rear-end car collision. Oculomotor functions were generally normal. The cervico-ocular reflex was usually absent or displayed the low gain typical of normal subjects. There was no nystagmic response to static neck torsion. The vestibulo-ocular reflex showed vestibular hyperreactivity (VH) in a significantly large number of cases (n = 17; 53%). The respiratory test results were also typical of the hyperventilation syndrome (HVS) in a significantly large number of cases (n = 12; 38%). The

The Current Status and Trends of Research Related to Vestibular Disorders, Vertigo, and Cognitive Impairment in the Elderly Population: A Bibliometric Analysis.

Background: The vestibular system not only supports reflex function at the brainstem level, but is also associated with higher levels of cognitive function. Vertigo due to vestibular disorders may lead to or be associated with cognitive dysfunction. Patients with deficits of both vestibular as well as cognitive function may be at particularly high risk for events like falls or certain diseases, such as Alzheimer's. Objective: To analyze the current state of research and trends in the global research literature regarding the correlation between vestibular disorders, vertigo, and cognitive impai

Clinical features of delayed endolymphatic hydrops and intralabyrinthine schwannoma : An imaging-confirmed comparative case series. English version.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to compare the clinical history and audiovestibular function test results of patients suffering from i … with DEH. While audiometry achieved poorer results for patients with intralabyrinthine schwannomas, vestibular function tests revealed normal results in about half of the patients in both groups. CONCLUSION: Patients with intralabyrinthine schwannomas may present with clinical symptoms similar to patients suffering from other inner ear disorders such as delayed endolympha …

Behavioral methods for the functional assessment of hair cells in zebrafish.

Zebrafish is an emerging animal model for studies on auditory system. This model presents high comparability with humans, good accessibility to the hearing organ, and high throughput capacity. To better utilize this animal model, methodologies need to be used to quantify the hearing function of the zebrafish. Zebrafish displays a series of innate and robust behavior related to its auditory function. Here, we reviewed the advantage of using zebrafish in auditory research and then introduced three behavioral tests, as follows: the startle response, the vestibular-ocular reflex, and rheotaxis. Th

Vestibular perception following acute unilateral vestibular lesions.

Little is known about the vestibulo-perceptual (VP) system, particularly after a unilateral vestibular lesion. We investigated vestibulo-ocular (VO) and VP function in 25 patients with vestibular neuritis (VN) acutely (2 days after onset) and after compensation (recovery phase, 10 weeks). Since the effect of VN on reflex and perceptual function may differ at threshold and supra-threshold acceleration levels, we used two stimulus intensities, acceleration steps of 0.5°/s(2) and velocity steps of 90°/s (acceleration 180°/s(2)). We hypothesised that the vestibular lesion or the compensatory proce

Vestibular and motor contributions to mobility: limitations of seniors awaiting discharge from hospital care.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Following hospitalization, seniors are at risk of impaired mobility and increased risk of falling, which can lead to injuries and re-admission. The primary purpose of this paper was to evaluate the ability of hospitalized seniors to use vestibular inputs for balance control. The secondary purpose was to examine the influence of vestibular function and lower limb muscle strength on mobility. METHODS: Experimental and correlation designs were used. Patients (aged 65-90 years), preparing for discharge from an inpatient geriatric rehabilitation unit, were recruited. Vestib

The vestibular symptomatology of Machado-Joseph Disease.

BACKGROUND: Machado Joseph Disease (MJD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disease. In previous studies, we described significant bilateral horizontal Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex (VOR) deficit within this population without any reference to the presence of vestibular symptomatology. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether, beyond cerebellar ataxia complaints, MJD patients have typical vestibular symptomatology corresponding to the accepted diagnostic criteria of Bilateral Vestibulopathy (BVP) according to the definition of the International Barany Society of Neuro-Otology. METHODS: Twenty-one MJ

Comparison of three diagnostic tests in detecting vestibular deficit in patients with peripheral vestibulopathy.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the results of the video head impulse test and of the caloric and rotatory chair tests in patients with dizziness. Agreement between test results was assessed and the best protocol for detecting peripheral vestibulopathy was identified. METHODS: Participants comprised 116 patients, 75 with a peripheral vestibulopathy and 41 with non-peripheral vestibulopathy. The main outcome measures were classified as normal or abnormal according to our laboratory data. RESULTS: Agreement between tests was low. Vestibulopathy testing that required all three results

Romberg test: Differentiating vestibular from somatosensory ataxia.

INTRODUCTION: The Romberg Test (RT) is a traditional bedside test of static balance. However, its nonspecific original description and focus on proprioceptive deficits have limited its diagnostic utility for vestibular dysfunction. We used gyroscopic measurements of trunk sway at the body's center of mass, time to fall, and a Subjective Instability score (SI) to gain more detailed insights than the binary outcomes typically used in clinical practice. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether specific patterns of sway and sway perception during the RT and its variants differentiate individuals with vesti

Cervical and Ocular Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials in Healthy Individuals: Normative Values for Bone Conduction at Different Frequencies.

PURPOSE: The objectives of this study were to establish normative values for the vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) test in adults and to evaluate test-retest reliability using bone-conducted stimuli at different frequencies. METHOD: The present study comprised 35 individuals aged 18-40 years. Cervical VEMP and ocular VEMP tests were administered using tone-burst stimuli delivered at 60 dB nHL at frequencies of 250, 500, and 750 Hz with a Radioear B-71 bone vibrator. The initial evaluation was conducted by one clinician, and a subsequent evaluation was performed by a different clinic

[The study on the clinical application of computer-assisted subjective visual vertical/horizontal line tests at different head deflection angles in the diagnosis of vestibular neuritis].

Objective:This study aimed to assess the clinical application of subjective visual vertical(SVV) and subjective visual horizontal(SVH) tests at different head deflection angles in the diagnosis of vestibular neuritis(VN), offering insights for a more precise evaluation of otolith dysfunction. Methods:A total of 40 patients with VN who were diagnosed at the Hearing Impairment and Vertigo Centre, Xinhua Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, between January and December 2024 were retrospectively analysed, and 31 healthy adults served as the control group. All participants un
