[Effect of inner ear immune response on vestibular function in guinea pigs].

We examined vestibular dysfunction and histological damage caused by direct antigen challenge to the endolymphatic sac in guinea pigs. We observed spontaneous nystagmus every eight hours and performed caloric testing every week following endolymphatic sac secondary KLH challenge. Spontaneous nystagmus was seen in 12 of 18 animals, and nystagmus in all directed toward the unchallenged ear (paralytic). The caloric response time courses were classified into two types, which were irreversible type and reversible type after endolymphatic sac KLH challenge. The immune injury of animals with irrevers

[Space motion sickness].

This review describes symptoms of space motion sickness (SMS) observed in many cosmonauts during the first day in orbit. It also discusses similar symptoms detected in them upon return to the Earth which constitute the readaptation syndrome. The paper gives a detailed discussion of different theories that explain the etiology and pathogenesis of SMS and the post-flight readaptation syndrome, viz, sensory conflict or sensory mismatch, disorders in the labyrinthine paired function, and blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation. It is emphasized that none of the theories used separately can

Vestibular hyperreactivity and hyperventilation.

In a group of 26 patients with a hyperventilation syndrome, 77% showed vestibular hyperreactivity of velocity step responses, mostly due to an increase in gain of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), apparent from an increase in initial velocity, but also due to an increase in the time constant. Similar effects were found among 11 normal subjects after forced hyperventilation. In another group of 44 patients whose primary complaint was dizziness and who showed vestibular hyperreactivity without having any other demonstrable abnormality, a hyperventilation syndrome was found in 75%. This suggests

[Compensatory vestibular performance and rotation perception].

The pendular test was used to study turning sensations in 31 patients and 24 test persons. A steering wheel was attached to the pendular chair, and persons were asked to turn against chair rotation. Chair movement, steering wheel and horizontal vestibular nystagmus were computer-analysed. The correlation between the cumulogram of slow nystagmus phases and steering wheel rotations was evaluated. The values of the steering wheel and eye movements were calculated. It could be shown that the compensation of the pendular chair by the aid of the steering wheel was symmetric in healthy persons, in sp

Spatial orientation in weightlessness and readaptation to earth's gravity.

Unusual vestibular responses to head movements in weightlessness may produce spatial orientation illusions and symptoms of space motion sickness. An integrated set of experiments was performed during Spacelab 1, as well as before and after the flight, to evaluate responses mediated by the otolith organs and semicircular canals. A variety of measurements were used, including eye movements, postural control, perception of orientation, and susceptibility to space sickness.

Curare and the efferent vestibular system. An electrophysiological study in the frog.

In the frog we have studied the action of d-tubocurarine on the spontaneous discharge recorded from the whole horizontal semicircular canal (HC) nerve and from single HC afferent fibres. Gross activity was recorded in isolated head preparations. In each case, the spontaneous frequency was measured 6 min before and 16 min after a drop of D-tubocurarine (0.1 microliter, 5.10(-6)M) dissolved in Ringer or after a similar drop of Ringer was injected into the perilymph near the HC ampulla. Curare elicited a significant increase of the discharge frequency in about 60% of the preparations and a decrea

Vestibular influence on tongue activity.

The vestibular system was electrically stimulated in cats anesthetized with ketamine. Peripheral stimulation by an electrode positioned in the vestibule evoked torsional contralateral eye deviations and an electromyogram (EMG) response in a contralateral dorsal neck extensor. Consistently associated with this well documented vestibular pattern was an EMG response in tongue protrusive muscles, at a latency of 13 +/- 5 (means +/- SD) ms. Stimulation in a specific part of the rostroventral lateral vestibular nucleus elicited the same combination of responses: torsional contralateral eye deviation

Physiological and psychological correlates of motion sickness.

Motion sickness (MS)has been inconclusively associated with personality and physical vestibular functioning in both males and females. The present work consisted of six tests: test of field dependency; pure balance test; motion sickness questionnaire; body steadiness test; primary suggestibility test; resistance to disturbance test. In addition the EPI was completed by a proportion of subjects. Male and female data for the 15 male and 15 female subjects in an age range 20 to 30 years, obtained from within Bedford College, University of London, were factor analysed separately. The results show

[Effect of antihistaminic agents on the blood supply to the brain in stimulation of the vestibular apparatus].

It has been established in chronic experiments on intact rabbits by the hydrogen clearance method that stimulation of the vestibular apparatus leads to an appreciable increase in the overall brain blood flow and in the regional blood flow in the frontal, occipital and temporal areas of the brain along with the development of motion sickness. Intravenous injections of diprazine (1 mg/kg) and suprastin (2 mg/kg) noticeably reduce the brain vascular reactions during vestibular disorders, diminish or prevent the increased blood flow in the brain or in its individual areas, occurring in motion dise

[Rupture of the round window - a cause of sudden hearing loss (author's transl)].

Rupture of the round window has been mostly described as an occasional lesion with sudden deafness and vertigo after diving, flying and physical stress, usually according to the patient's history. It also seems to be the cause of sudden progressive hearing loss of so-called idiopathic origin as shown by the findings in 6 out of 9 patients with perilymphatic fistulas. Therefore, transtympanic endoscopic evaluation of the round window is performed in the author's clinic as a routine measure in patients with sudden complete deafness or severe progressive loss of hearing even without any pointer t

Vestibular investigations in Meniere's disease.

151 patients with unilateral Meniere's disease were investigated with a vestibular test battery in the interval between vertigo attacks, and the results were compared with those obtained in a control group. In 73.5% of the patients a caloric response reduction of the afflicted ear was observed. The mean caloric response reduction was 34.3%; a major response reduction or a total absence of the caloric response of the afflicted ear was rare. A correlation was found between the amount of caloric response reduction and the duration of the disease. Spontaneous nystagmus was found in 47% of the case

Variations in gravitoinertial force level affect the gain of the vestibulo-ocular reflex: implications for the etiology of space motion sickness.

Recordings of horizontal nystagmus were obtained on 16 male subjects exposed to repeated patterns of horizontal angular acceleration, constant velocity rotation, and sudden-stop deceleration in the laboratory and in the free-fall and high-force periods of parabolic flight. Nystagmus intensity was a clear function of gravitoinertial force level: slow phase velocity and beat frequency increased during exposure to high force levels and decreased in free-fall compared to values obtained at I G. These findings indicate that the gain of the vestibulo-ocular reflex decreases in free-fall. This fact l

Designing a better postural measurement system.

For more than a century the phenomenon of postural sway has attracted the attention of neurologists, control engineers, and otoneurologists, because body sway provides a global assessment of the sensorimotor systems involved in postural control. This article presents an overview of the history of body sway studies, highlighting some of the shortcomings of past techniques. Spurred on by these shortcomings, we specified design criteria for a better postural measurement system. The system has been implemented, and some of the preliminary applications are detailed that demonstrate the utility of o

[Idiopathic scoliosis and equilibrium disturbance (author's transl)].

UNLABELLED: The body balance is maintained by the complexed nervous system in the brain stem and the cerebellum. However, the amount of neurological information obtained from this area is relatively small, so that a fine abnormality is easily overlooked or could not be definitely elicited. Examination of the ocular movement becomes often a powerful tool to detect an indiscrete lesion in the brain stem and the cerebellum which otherwise fails to be demonstrated neurologically. METHOD: With a hypothesis that equilibrium disturbance might be playing a role in the development of idiopathic scolio

Effect of CO2 on the perilymphatic oxygen tension in cats.

A microelectrode with a tip of 100micron permitting recording of the oxygen tension in the perilymphatic space according to the polarographic principle and having a minimal drift of 1-25% per hour has been developed. The effects of apnea, hypo- and hyperventilation as well as those of inhalation of pure oxygen, and CO2 upon the perilymphatic PO2 have been measured by placing the electrode in the perilymph through the fenestrated stapedial footplate of 87 adult cats. The correlation between the arterial PO2 and the perilymphatic PO2 is so close that even hypo- or hyperventilation in presence of

Susceptibility to motion sickness and ego closeness, ego distance as measured by the autokinetic response tendency.

This paper reports results from one phase in an ongoing study of the relationship between vestibular function and various aspects of personality, cognitive style and symptom formation in mental illness. In the experiment reported here a measure of autokinesis was shown to relate to motion sickness experience as judged by actual stimulation in a rotating chair. Low and intermediate sensitive subjects showed less autokinesis than the most motion sick individuals (two-way analysis of variance F = 5.735, P = 0.006). Males in this sample showed a significantly greater autokinetic tendency than fema

Inner ear morphology in Down's syndrome.

A comparative study was made on four pairs of temporal bones from patients with Down's syndrome (trisomy 21) and 15 pairs of temporal bones from other infants of the same age range. Spiral reconstructions showed chochlear length to be slightly shorter in temporal bones from patients with Down's syndrome than that in the controls. Based upon these dimensional measurements, a developmental anomaly of the vestibular apparatus was found.
