Expression patterns of mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid receptors in Bengalese finch (Lonchura striata var. domestica) brain suggest a relationship between stress hormones and song-system development.

Much evidence suggests that song traits function as an honest signal of male quality during mate choice in songbirds. Because songbirds learn vocalizations during the juvenile stage, development of the song system and song traits is affected by stressful conditions. However, it remains unknown how stressful conditions affect later song traits during development. To explore the relationship between glucocorticoids and song-system development, we performed in situ hybridization analysis of the glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid receptors in juvenile and adult brains. The glucocorticoid recepto

Phase effects in masking by harmonic complexes in birds.

Masking by harmonic complexes depends on the frequency content of the masker and its phase spectrum. Harmonic complexes created with negative Schroeder phases (component phases decreasing with increasing frequency) produce more masking than those with positive Schroeder phases (increasing phase) in humans, but not in birds. The masking differences in humans have been attributed to interactions between the masker phase spectrum and the phase characteristic of the basilar membrane. In birds, the similarity in masking by positive and negative Schroeder maskers, and reduced masking by cosine-phase

Representation of spectral and temporal envelope of twitter vocalizations in common marmoset primary auditory cortex.

Cortical sensitivity in representations of behaviorally relevant complex input signals was examined in recordings from primary auditory cortical neurons (AI) in adult, barbiturate-anesthetized common marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus). We studied the robustness of distributed responses to natural and degraded forms of twitter calls, social contact vocalizations comprising several quasi-periodic phrases of frequency and AM. We recorded neuronal responses to a monkey's own twitter call (MOC), degraded forms of their twitter call, and sinusoidal amplitude modulated (SAM) tones with modulation

Dissociation of consummatory and vocal components of feeding in squirrel monkeys treated with benzodiazepines and alcohol.

The primary aim of the current experiments was to develop methods that engender vocalizations associated with positive social situations comprising affiliative behavior and feeding that could be quantified under controlled laboratory conditions and were sensitive to anxiolytic drugs. Classical conditioning procedures were used to elicit vocalizations during presentation of stimulus lights (i.e., CS condition) previously paired with either preferred foods (e.g., grapes, peanuts, bananas) or standard foods (e.g., monkey chow) as well as during presentation of both food types (i.e., UCS condition

Is there a dissociation between emotional feelings and emotional signs in autism?

There is evidence that autistic persons are deficient both in the expression and recognition of emotion. Emotions are viewed here as in part genetically determined, inborn behaviours with great importance for social regulations. Both in phylogenetic and in ontogenetic development there is a transgression from emotion-bound or signal-reflex-like behaviour chains towards an experience-based coupling of emotional signals with events lying outside emotional exchanges. We conjecture that in childhood autism there is a deficit in linking biologically based emotional signals to emotional experiences

Analysis of ultrasonic vocalizations emitted by infant rodents.

Altricial rodent pups emit ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs), which are whistle-like sounds with frequencies between 30 and 90 kHz. These signals play an important communicative role in mother-offspring interaction because they elicit in the dam a prompt response as concerning care-giving behaviors. To investigate neurobehavioral development, the analysis of the number of USVs presents several advantages: (1) USVs are one of the few responses produced by very young rodents that can be quantitatively analyzed and elicited by quantifiable stimuli; (2) USV emission follows a clear ontogenetic profi

Ultrasonic vocalization responses of rat pups to acute separation and contact comfort do not depend on maternal thermal cues.

In order to assess the importance of maternal thermal cues in controlling the acute USV responses of rat pups to contact with her body (the contact comfort response) and to separation from her, we drastically altered maternal temperature by inducing severe hypothermia so that maternal rectal and flank temperatures averaged more than 20 degrees C below normal and 10 degrees C below ambient levels during testing. Isolated 12- to 13-day-old pups showed reductions in USV when these cold dams were presented and brisk USV accelerations when the cold dams were removed from the test chamber. These res

A CNTNAP1 Missense Variant Associated With Laryngeal Paralysis and Polyneuropathy in Young Great Dane Dogs.

BACKGROUND: Major genetic risk loci and causative mutations classified as LPN1 (Leonberger polyneuropathy type 1), LPN2 (Leonberger polyneuropathy type 2), and LPPN3 (Laryngeal paralysis polyneuropathy type 3) have been identified in Leonberger and Saint Bernard dogs with laryngeal paralysis and polyneuropathy (LPPN). Other large breed dogs, including the Great Dane, can present clinically with LPPN, and this breed previously was identified as a carrier of the LPPN3 variant. To date, homozygosity for this variant has not been identified in Great Dane dogs. INTERVENTIONS: Results of neurologic

Vocal fold restoration after scarring: biocompatibility and efficacy of an MSC-based bioequivalent.

BACKGROUND: There is growing interest to application of regenerative medicine approaches in otorhinolaryngological practice, especially in the framework of the therapy of vocal fold (VF) scar lesions. The used conservative and surgical methods, despite the achieved positive outcomes, are frequently unpredictable and do not result in the restoration of the VF's lamina propria's structure, which provides the mechanical properties necessary for vibration. In this connection, the aim of this study was to ascertain the safety and efficacy of a bioequivalent in the treatment of VF scars using a rabb

Accelerometry May be Superior to EMG for Early Evaluation of Vocal Cord Function After Nerve Injury in a Pig Model.

OBJECTIVE: Vocal cord (VC) movement has been demonstrated by the use of accelerometry (ACC) to decrease in parallel with the electromyographic amplitude (EMG) during ongoing traction injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN). When RLN function recovers, discrepancies between EMG and VC movement have been reported in clinical and experimental studies. The present study was conducted to clarify the actual relationship between EMG and VC movement measured by ACC during nerve recovery. METHODS: EMG obtained by continuous nerve monitoring (C-IONM) was compared with ACC during traction injury t

Laryngeal stent for acute and chronic respiratory distress in seven dogs with laryngeal paralysis.

BACKGROUND: Laryngeal paralysis, failure of arytenoid cartilage, and vocal fold abduction are commonly seen in older medium to large breed dogs. Observation of laryngeal function in dogs and cats is performed by transoral visualization. There are a variety of surgical techniques; aspiration pneumonia is the most common complication associated with surgical correction of laryngeal paralysis. The aim of this case series is to report on the placement of a laryngeal silicone stent in seven dogs with laryngeal paralysis and its use as an alternative treatment of respiratory distress caused by laryn

Olfactory-ensheathing cells promote physiological repair of injured recurrent laryngeal nerves and functional recovery of glottises in dogs.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether the transplantation of olfactory-ensheathing cells (OECs) could physiologically repair severely injured recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) in dogs. Adult Beagle dogs were surgically introduced with a 10-mm defect in the left RLN and transplanted with a nerve guide (NEUROLAC) containing dog olfactory mucosa-olfactory-ensheathing cells (OM-OECs) in matrigel. The effects of OM-OECs on the morphology, histology, and electrophysiology of the injured RLNs, glottis movement, and voice acoustics were comparatively studied. Two months after transplantation,

Direct simultaneous measurement of intraglottal geometry and velocity fields in excised larynges.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Current theories regarding the mechanisms of phonation are based on assumptions about the aerodynamics between the vocal folds during the closing phase of vocal fold vibration. However, many of these fundamental assumptions have never been validated in a tissue model. In this study, the main objective was to determine the aerodynamics (velocity fields) and the geometry of the medial surface of the vocal folds during the closing phase of vibration. The main hypothesis is that intraglottal vortices are produced during vocal fold closing when the glottal duct has a divergen

Biomechanical properties of recurrent laryngeal nerve in the piglet.

Unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVP) results from damage to the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN). The most common causes of UVP are associated with compromised RLN tissue. The purpose of this research was to investigate the biomechanical properties of piglet RLN and identify differences in these properties along its length and in between the left and right side. Quasi-static uniaxial tensile testing and isotropic constitutive modeling was performed on seven piglet RLNs. Stiffness and other biomechanical parameters were derived from these tests and compared from conducting two different statist

Granular cell tumour affecting the left vocal cord in a dog.

Granular cell tumours (GCTs) have been described in human vocal cords, but not in those of the dog. A single polyp in the left vocal cord, associated with laryngeal oedema and monolateral hyperplasia of the tonsil, was observed endoscopically in a 6-year-old male dog. Cytologically, the mass was characterized by well-defined polygonal cells, with granular cytoplasm and an eccentric nucleus. Histologically, the mass showed sheets of globoid to polygonal cells, filled with numerous diastase-resistant, periodic acid-Schiff-positive granules, and scanty stroma. Ultrastructurally, the granules were

Sound signature for identification of tracheal collapse and laryngeal paralysis in dogs.

The aims of this study were to investigate whether upper airway sounds of dogs with laryngeal paralysis and tracheal collapse have distinct sound characteristics, compared with unaffected dogs. The sounds of 5 dogs with laryngeal paralysis and 5 dogs with tracheal collapse were recorded. Honking sound appeared as predominant clinical signs in dogs with tracheal collapse. Laryngeal stridors appeared as predominant clinical signs in dogs with experimentally produced laryngeal paralysis by resection of laryngeal nerve, in which two types of stridor, I and II, were recorded. All these sounds were

[Clinicopathological evaluation of intralaryngeal ultrasonography].

We used a miniature ultrasonic probe to study its diagnostic application in the detection of laryngeal lesions. Using the immersion method and an extracted human larynx, we evaluated ultrasonic images, identified the layered structure of vocal folds, and examined clinical cases following the study of diagnostic application. By the immersion method, ultrasonic images revealed that the membranous vocal fold was separated into three layers. We identified the histological structures of these three layers by comparing the ultrasonic images with the corresponding histologies. The first layer (hypere

[A comparative study of laryngeal reinnervation from the ansa cervicalis].

A comparative study of four methods of laryngeal muscle reinnervation in dogs is presented. Twenty-eight cases were divided into four groups to undergo main branch and branch of ansa cervicalis nerve anastomosis, and nerves implantation an neuromuscular pedicles transfer respectively for restoration of vocal cord adduction on left sides. The results showed that the four procedures seemed to induce effective reinnervation of adductor muscles. But the main branch of ansa cervicalis nerve suture was superior to the other methods among which little difference was noted in the functional recovery,

Afferents from vocal motor and respiratory effectors are recruited during vocal production in juvenile songbirds.

Learned behaviors require coordination of diverse sensory inputs with motivational and motor systems. Although mechanisms underlying vocal learning in songbirds have focused primarily on auditory inputs, it is likely that sensory inputs from vocal effectors also provide essential feedback. We investigated the role of somatosensory and respiratory inputs from vocal effectors of juvenile zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) during the stage of sensorimotor integration when they are learning to imitate a previously memorized tutor song. We report that song production induced expression of the imme
