Mortality and morbidity in white water rafting in New Zealand.

OBJECTIVES: This study provides the first descriptive overview of fatal and non-fatal injury associated with white water and other recreational river rafting in New Zealand. The current study sought to identify the nature and causes of hospitalisable injuries and to identify the causes of fatal injuries to white water rafters. DESIGN: The data were obtained from the New Zealand Health Information Service (NZHIS) mortality and morbidity files. Mortality data for the period from 1983 to 1995 and morbidity data from 1983-1996 were used. PARTICIPANTS: Members of the public who took part in white…

Secondary hyperparathyroidism and bone turnover in elderly blacks and whites.

This study was undertaken to describe the prevalence of secondary hyperparathyroidism in African-American and Caucasian participants in the … ctively. The prevalence of hyperparathyroidism was 38% in the 144 black subjects and 20% in the 111 white subjects. Serum osteocalcin and cross-linked N-telopeptides of type I collagen were significantly higher in both black and white hyperparathyroid subjects (P < 0.05), and the hyperparathyroid-related difference in osteocalcin was greater among black …

Perceptions of body hair on white women: effects of labeling.

This study examined 118 college students' perceptions of a White woman with body hair as a function of two different possible attributions. Participants reacted to a video of a young woman described as being either a feminist or as having a medical condition that hindered shaving. Students rated the woman on a variety of interpersonal traits. Analysis showed a main effect for body hair and for description but no interaction. The woman with body hair, whether for feminist or alternative reasons, was rated as significantly less friendly, moral, and relaxed, as well as more aggressive, unsociable…

Acute sarcocystosis in a captive white-tailed deer in Virginia.

A 19-mo-old female captive white-tailed deer in a public wild animal park in Richmond (Virginia, USA) was necropsied and evaluated histologically following spontaneous death after a 1 wk period of lethargy in a captive herd of 22 deer. An acute necrotizing pneumonia was associated with intraendothelial protozoal schizonts that were identified immunohistochemically as Sarcocystis spp. This is the first confirmed report of acute sarcocystosis in a wild ruminant.

Distress and hardiness: a comparison of African-American and white caregivers.

The difficulties and burdens of family caregiving, including mental and physical distress, have been well delineated, especially among White populations. Researchers have suggested that buffers for stress associated with caregiving might include hardiness, social support, or cultural group membership, with African-American caregivers perceiving less stress. This paper reports mental and physical distress and family hardiness among 46 African-American and White caregivers of stroke survivors. In contrast to other reports, African-American and White caregivers in this sample were found to be sim…

White grain mycetoma caused by a Cylindrocarpon sp. in India.

We describe a case of white grain eumycetoma of the foot of an Indian male caused by a slow-growing, poorly sporulating fungus that does not match any known agent of this infection. Histologic examination of a biopsy tissue specimen showed oval, lobular, white granules composed of hyaline, septate hyphae, and thick-walled chlamydospores. Culture of granules from a draining sinus yielded compact, very-slow-growing, poorly sporulating colonies producing a strong reddish brown pigment that diffused into the medium. The fungus was identified as a Cylindrocarpon sp. based on the development of rare…

White matter hyperintensities on MRI in a patient with corticobasal degeneration.

We describe a patient who presented with the clinicopathological features of corticobasal degeneration (CBD). Over the course of 8 years, the patient developed myoclonus, dystonia, and supranuclear gaze palsy associated with an akinetic-rigid syndrome. To our knowledge, no previous report of a patient with CBD has described clear-cut regional white matter changes as revealed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. In our patient, a T2-weighted MR image of the brain showed focal atrophy of the bilateral frontal cortex and asymmetric regional hyperintensities of the subjacent white matter. Th…

Access to white bread as an intervention for chronic ruminative vomiting.

Research has demonstrated that providing extra and sometimes unlimited food quantities following meals can be effective in reducing or eliminating ruminative vomiting in persons with developmental disabilities. In this study, providing access to white bread was evaluated as an alternative method of satiation-based treatment of rumination displayed by an 18-year old male with mental retardation. White bread was made available during 1-h periods following daily meals and this intervention produced a reduction in ruminating to near zero levels throughout the young man's waking hours. Long-term fo…

Epithelial sodium channel activity is not increased in hypertension in whites.

Abnormal renal sodium transport causing excess reabsorption of sodium may be one mechanism that causes high blood pressure. For example, increased activity of epithelial sodium channels in the distal tubule is the cause of high blood pressure in Liddle's syndrome, a rare familial form of hypertension. We have shown that the increase in sodium channel activity can be detected in the nose using transepithelial potential difference measurements in 1 family with Liddle's syndrome. We therefore used nasal potential difference measurements to look for increased sodium channel activity in white patie…

Molecular basis for the dominant white phenotype in the domestic pig.

The change of phenotypic traits in domestic animals and crops as a response to selective breeding mimics the much slower evolutionary change in natural populations. Here, we describe that the dominant white phenotype in domestic pigs is caused by two mutations in the KIT gene encoding the mast/stem cell growth factor receptor (MGF), one gene duplication associated with a partially dominant phenotype and a splice mutation in one of the copies leading to the fully dominant allele. The splice mutation is a G to A substitution in the first nucleotide of intron 17 and leads to skipping of exon 17. …

Toxicity of white phosphorus to waterfowl: acute exposure in mallards.

As part of an effort to understand extensive, white phosphorus (P4)-induced waterfowl mortality at Eagle River Flats, Fort Richardson, Alaska (USA), we conducted a number of acute toxicity tests using penned mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) in 1993 and 1994. The 24-hr median lethal dose (LD50) for P4 dissolved in oil was 6.46 mg/kg in adult males and 6.96 mg/kg in adult females. Although the median lethal doses were not statistically different, the female dose-response curve had a statistically shallower slope than that of males. The LD50 for the ecologically more relevant pelletized form of P4 i…

Handling and aflatoxin contamination of white maize in Costa Rica.

Projects funded by International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada and the European Commission have enabled the examination of more than 3000 samples of maize collected from all regions of Costa Rica at different stages, from the growing crop through storage to final sale, and at different water contents. Contamination with Aspergillus flavus was frequent and about 80% of samples contained more than 20 ng aflatoxins g(-1) grain. Average contamination with aflatoxins in the Brunca Region was > 274 ng g(-1) while that in other regions was < 70 ng g(-1). Except in Brunca region, where

Morphological alterations of the visual system in white zebra finches.

Visual system anomalies in albino mammals are generally caused by a lack of retinal pigment and misrouting of retinofugal optic fibres. This study shows that the visual system of white zebra finches differs morphologically from that of normally coloured (wild type) birds, although eye pigmentation and retinofugal projection are normal. In white zebra finches, the recrossing tectorotundal projection is enhanced and a new (reciprocal) connection is established between the n. rotundi of both hemispheres. The morphological alterations found in this study may contribute to the previously described …

[Myocardial infarction in a man with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome].

A case of 52 years old male patient with antero-septal myocardial infarction in the course of type B Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome has been described. Intravenous administration of 50 mg of ajmaline 2 hours after admission to hospital suppressed the electrocardiographic signs of preexcitation and disclosed previously imperceptible image of acute inferior myocardial infarction. Repeated intravenous ajmaline injection before discharging from the hospital enabled to specify the final localisation of the infarction (antero-septal and inferior), made possible the realization of ecg exercise test a…

Prominent white matter cavitation in an infant with Alexander's disease.

The clinical history and autopsy findings are reported on a case of infantile Alexander's disease (AD). The patient, a white baby girl, developed seizures at age 4 months accompanied by internal hydrocephalus. She died at age 11 months following a progressive, downhill course of profound psychomotor retardation, recurrent seizures and cachexia. The general autopsy was remarkable for cachexia. The formalin fixed brain and spinal cord were studied by light and electron microscopy (EM). The brain was normal in weight for age but showed diffuse pallor of white matter and marked cavitation involvin…

Black and white differences: narrowing the gap in cancer medicine.

Excess mortality is a complex problem involving multiple sub-problems including culture, economics, lifestyle, issues related to cancer biology, and access to medical care among other issues. Consideration has to be given to the multiple influences that lead to this discrepancy in survival related to cancer and the increased incidence of certain tumors. Increased availability of state-of-the-art cancer treatment to the population as a whole will upgrade the level of care by those that participate in clinical trials; the physicians and finally even those patients who are not entered into the tr

Effects of white light on the pineal gland of the chick embryo.

Chick embryos were directly exposed to a source of white light during incubation and sacrificed before hatching. The light caused a number of teratological effects such as high mortality, delay in development, celosomy, hepatomegaly, auricular dilation and micrognatia. The pineal gland of the illuminated embryos showed an increase in number and size of the intracytoplasmic lipid droplets of the follicular pinealocytes. These findings suggest that the pineal gland of the chick embryo is sensitive to light.
