Occupational Accidents with Agricultural Machinery in Austria.

The number of recognized accidents with fatalities during agricultural and forestry work, despite better technology and coordinated prevention and trainings, is still very high in Austria. The accident scenarios in which people are injured are very different on farms. The common causes of accidents in agriculture and forestry are the loss of control of machine, means of transport or handling equipment, hand-held tool, and object or animal, followed by slipping, stumbling and falling, breakage, bursting, splitting, slipping, fall, and collapse of material agent. In the literature, a number of s

Patient Factors, Donor Age, and Graft Storage Duration Affect Osteochondral Allograft Outcomes in Knees with or without Comorbidities.

Limited data exists defining preoperative variables that affect outcomes after osteochondral allograft transplantation (OAT) in the knee. In this retrospective study, we examined 75 patients who underwent OAT for large (≥2 cm2) grade IV cartilage defects in the femoral condyle. Patient variables evaluated included the following: smoking, workers compensation, body mass index (BMI), pre-injury activity level, number, and the type of co-morbidities in the operated knee, lesion location and number of grafts placed. OCA donor age and graft storage duration from procurement were also evaluated. Pre

Return to activity after knee arthroscopy.

PURPOSE: Although knee arthroscopy is described as minimally invasive, return to activity has been poorly quantitated. Our purpose is to test the hypothesis that most patients return to unrestricted activity within 4 weeks after knee arthroscopy. METHODS: After prospective power analysis, 72 consecutive patients who underwent arthroscopic knee partial medial meniscectomy, partial lateral meniscectomy, chondroplasty, loose body removal, or synovectomy (or some combination thereof) by a single surgeon were included. Patients with Workers' Compensation claims were excluded. Postoperative instruc…

Gender differences in prevalence of upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders.

A literature review was conducted on the current literature base to determine the strength of support for the hypothesis that women experience higher prevalences of upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders (UEMSDs) than men. Fifty-six articles were reviewed for data on gender differences in frequency, incidence or prevalence rates for musculoskeletal disorders specific to the upper extremities. These articles included both general and working populations. The majority of the studies showed that women had significantly higher incidences of various types of UEMSDs than men. This trend was consi

Patient and injury characteristics in the development of cold sensitivity of the hand: a prospective cohort study.

In this prospective cohort study, we questioned whether cold sensitivity occurring after all types of injuries decreases, increases, or remains constant. We also questioned which patient and injury characteristics are most associated with the development of cold sensitivity. The degree of cold sensitivity of 123 patients with acute hand and forearm injuries was repeatedly scored from a prevalidated questionnaire over 11 months after injury. Twenty-five patients with more severe symptoms at 11 months were reassessed at 3 years. The patients' age, gender, smoking habit, workers' compensation sta…

[Cutaneous malignancies in occupationally-induced scars].

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of neoplasms in injury scars--as consequence of occupational accidents--may lead to compensation according to the statutory accident insurance regulations. According to newer regulatory attempts in occupational dermatology, certain criteria have to be met before the diagnosis of a neoplasm induced by a scar is accepted and compensation is due. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Based on a retrospective analysis of 217 dermatological claim files between 2007 and 2009 of the IPA (including 22 follow-ups), medical opinions on neoplasms developing in possible occupational scars were

Rehabilitation of injured workers with chronic pain: a stage of change phenomenon.

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to explore the stages of change involved in return to work (RTW) for a group of workers who had been suffering from chronic pain. METHOD: The participants were 67 (mean age = 42.67) injured workers who participated in a six-week RTW program. Assessments of the participants on various measures were conducted before and during the program, and at the end of the follow-up period (3 months post-program). RESULTS: The overall RTW rate of the participants was 65.7%. Most importantly, the participants' RTW outcomes were found to be significantly predicted by their

Social factors associated with psychological distress among inhabitants in a methyl-mercury polluted area in rural Japan.

Little attention has been paid to the mental health of inhabitants of methylmercury-polluted areas in Japan. This study examined the relationship between one's experience with Minamata disease (MD) (such as compensation issues) and psychological distress. The subjects were 133 (44.2%) of the 301 inhabitants over the age of 40 years living in two fishing village districts along the coast of the Yatsushiro Sea which had been contaminated with methylmercury. Data on the inhabitants' experience with MD, social network factor, health condition and mental health were obtained using questionnaires in

A global scoping review of task shifting and sharing interventions to improve the mental health of people living with HIV/AIDS.

People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH) often experience co-morbid/co-occurring mental health conditions, e.g., depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In resource-limited settings, where provider shortages are common, task shifting and task sharing (i.e., service delivery by non-professionals) are recommended strategies to promote access to and utilization of mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) services among PLWH. We conducted a global scoping review of the literature on MHPSS task shifting and sharing intervention studies for PLWH. Data extracted and summarized
