Unilateral electrical stimulation of the inferior colliculus of rats modifies the prepulse modulation of the startle response (PPI): effects of ketamine and diazepam.

The magnitude of an acoustic startle response can be reduced by a weak stimulus presented immediately before the startle-eliciting noise. This phenomenon has been termed prepulse inhibition of the startle reaction (PPI). Previous studies indicated that the primary neural pathways mediating PPI belong to the brain stem and that the inferior colliculus (IC) was crucial. Its destruction reduced PPI. Stimulations applied to brain areas may be as deleterious as lesions. Therefore, we looked for the possibility of a brain stimulation applied to the IC during a PPI test to reduce also PPI. Rats were

Time-course of the human medial olivocochlear reflex.

The time-course of the human medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) was measured via its suppression of stimulus-frequency otoacoustic emissions (SFOAEs) in nine ears. MOCR effects were elicited by contralateral, ipsilateral or bilateral wideband acoustic stimulation. As a first approximation, MOCR effects increased like a saturating exponential with a time constant of 277+/-62 ms, and decayed exponentially with a time constant of 159+/-54 ms. However, in ears with the highest signal-to-noise ratios (4/9), onset time constants could be separated into "fast," tau= approximately 70 ms, "medium," tau…

Effects of kainic acid on the cochlear potentials and distortion product otoacoustic emissions in chinchilla.

In absence of acoustic stimulation, the auditory nerve generates electrical noise with a spectral peak between 300 and 3000 Hz (Dolan et al., 1990). This electrical noise is eliminated when the dendrites of auditory nerve fibers are damaged by kainic acid (KA). We hypothesized that the KA-induced damage to the afferent dendrites might alter cochlear micromechanics or modify outer hair cell (OHC) electromotility. The KA-induced decrease in spontaneous electrical noise from the auditory nerve could conceivably reduce the spontaneous sounds recorded in the ear canal and the postulated change in c…

Commentary: Treating Diseases from Alzheimer's to Parkinson's Using Transcranial Pulse Stimulation: Mechanistic Insights, Recent Evidence, and Ethical Considerations.

Transcranial pulse stimulation (TPS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation method that uses, high-intensity acoustic shockwaves to deliver focused mechanical stimulation to neural tissue with minimal thermal effects. The mechanism of action includes but is not limited to promotion of blood flow and angiogenesis through mechanotransduction. Clinical data to date are limited and preliminary. In Alzheimer's disease (AD), TPS has demonstrated cognitive and mood improvements in pilot studies and secondary endpoint analysis in first randomized trials. The enhancement of gamma-band oscillations and netwo

Postural control in Menière's disease and acoustic neurinoma when studied on a linearly oscillating platform.

We investigated the effect of visual control on postural stability on a moving platform in 36 patients with Menière's disease (MD) in 25 patients with operated acoustic neurinoma (AN) and in 19 healthy controls. The force platform was placed on rails and oscillated linearly at frequencies from 0.2 to 5 Hz at a constant velocity of 30 mm/s. In all subjects, the support surface oscillation produced postural instability that differed significantly from the base line stability. The body sway velocity increased almost linearly with the increase of stimulation frequency. The MD patients swayed more

[Research progress on cochlear implantation in patients with unilateral deafness].

Cochlear implantation (CI) is a relatively new therapeutic method for patients with severe-to-profound unilateral sensorineural hearing loss. Acoustic signal can stimulate the ear directly, thus patients can gain better binaural hearing. This passage has reviewed the recent researches about CI for patients suffered from single side deafness. It can improve the ability of sound localization and speech recognition in noisy environment for patients, in addition, it may relieve tinnitus to some degree. But the long-term effect and indication selection still need further study.

Effect of vocal fold augmentation on laryngeal vibration in simulated recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis: a study of Teflon and Phonogel.

Flaccid laryngeal nerve paralysis may be treated by vocal fold augmentation with Teflon injection, which is successful to various degrees depending on the subjective interpretation of the patient or clinician. A new material, Phonogel, consisting of cross-linked bovine collagen, is available but not approved for human use in this area. Ten dogs were submitted to videostroboscopy, photoglottography, electroglottography, and acoustic analysis in the normal state, with stimulated recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis, and with injection of either Teflon or Phonogel. A statistical comparison and the

Preparation and performance of obstacle steps: interaction between brain and spinal neuronal activity.

This study investigated the interactions of supraspinal with spinal neuronal circuits during obstacle steps by recordings of electroencephalography (EEG), reflex activity and limb muscle electromyography (EMG). Subjects walking with reduced vision on a treadmill were acoustically informed about an approaching obstacle and received feedback about task performance. Only following a task-relevant acoustic signal, spinal reflex responses, evoked by tibial nerve stimulation during mid-stance, were enhanced in proximal arm and leg flexor muscles prior to obstacle compared to normal swing, reflecting

Proximal-to-distal facial amplitude ratios as predictors of facial nerve function after acoustic neuroma excision.

Electrophysiological studies (for example, electroneuronography, nerve action potentials, absolute amplitudes of the muscle compound action potentials, and stimulation thresholds) do not accurately predict facial nerve function after the excision of acoustic neuromas. To eliminate individual nerve variability, the authors measured the ratio of the amplitudes of muscle compound action potentials produced by stimulating the facial nerve at the brainstem proximally and at the internal auditory meatus near the transverse crest distally after total tumor excision in 20 patients. The mean tumor size

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials: intraoperative monitoring technique in surgery of posterior fossa tumors.

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were used to monitor eight neurosurgical procedures involving posterior fossa tumors to assist the neurosurgeon in preservation of hearing postoperatively. The technique included placement of recording electrodes over the Cz (vertex) and both earlobes. Stimulation was accomplished intraoperatively with a specifically designed intraauricular click stimulator that did not interfere with surgical access to the suboccipital region. Continuous BAEP recording was performed with particular attention to the sequence of preincision, opening of the dura, tumo

Inferior colliculus neuronal response abnormalities in genetically epilepsy-prone rats: evidence for a deficit of inhibition.

The genetically epilepsy-prone rat (GEPR) is abnormally susceptible to induction of seizures by acoustic stimulation. The inferior colliculus (IC) is critically important to audiogenic seizure susceptibility. The GEPR is more susceptible to induction of audiogenic seizures at 12 kHz than at other pure tone frequencies. IC neurons in the GEPR exhibit significantly elevated response thresholds and broader tuning characteristics than normal. These findings along with previous neurophysiological and anatomical data suggest that a hearing deficit occurs in the GEPR. IC neurons in the GEPR exhibit a…

Investigating Speech Intelligibility Capabilities of Electrical Auditory Stimulation.

INTRODUCTION: In military settings, ear-worn communication systems and hearing protection have equal importance, but opposite purposes. It is crucial to provide clear communication signal free of noise that may also be hazardous to hearing. Electrical auditory stimulation is a mode of transmitting high fidelity speech information with an amplitude modulated electromagnetic signal that is sent transcutaneously through electrodes. No traditional ear-worn transducer is needed, offering various locations for receiving auditory information on the head and body. The purpose of the current study is t

Deep brain reconditioning stimulation suppresses tinnitus in a rat model.

Many neurological and psychiatric disorders stem from maladaptive conditioning and resist treatment. Tinnitus, as one example, is the distressing perception of sound in the absence of an external source. One of the network systems implicated in multiple disorders is the 'salience network', associated with positive/negative reward, habit formation, motivation, valuation and mood. However, it is not known whether directly modulating the 'salience network' at its anatomical and physiological core, in the ventral striatum, more specifically the nucleus accumbens, could be beneficial. Here we show

Individual-Specific Effects of Transcranial Electrical Stimulation on 40-Hz Auditory Steady-State Responses.

Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) has shown promise for modulating brain function and related behavioral performance, but evidence has been mixed thus far. The possibility of tracking brain activity changes following tES via neurophysiological markers would benefit a better understanding of tES effects and the future development of tES protocols. One promising marker is the auditory steady-state response (ASSR), an externally controlled oscillatory brain activity, typically at 40 Hz, evoked by a periodic auditory stimulus. This study examined the offline effects of different types of t

Intact sensorimotor rhythm abilities but altered audiovisual integration in cochlear implant users.

Perception of rhythm significantly impacts various aspects of daily life, including engaging with music, discerning speech prosody nuances, and coordinating physical activities like walking and sports. Numerous studies in cognitive sciences have highlighted that human rhythmic synchronization is more precise when responding to auditory rhythmic stimuli than to visual ones when the timing cues are identical. However, deaf individuals were shown to display a heightened proficiency in synchronizing their movements with visual timing cues, outperforming hearing controls (HC). Furthermore, it was d

Delayed knowledge transfer: Cross-modal knowledge transfer from delayed stimulus to EEG for continuous attention detection based on spike-represented EEG signals.

Decoding visual and auditory stimuli from brain activities, such as electroencephalography (EEG), offers promising advancements for enhancing machine-to-human interaction. However, effectively representing EEG signals remains a significant challenge. In this paper, we introduce a novel Delayed Knowledge Transfer (DKT) framework that employs spiking neurons for attention detection, using our experimental EEG dataset. This framework extracts patterns from audiovisual stimuli to model brain responses in EEG signals, while accounting for inherent response delays. By aligning audiovisual features w

Sound-Induced Flash Illusions Support Cortex Hyperexcitability in Fibromyalgia.

OBJECTIVES: Fibromyalgia (FM) is characterized by spontaneous chronic widespread pain in combination with hyperalgesia to pressure stimuli. Sound-induced flash illusions (SIFIs) reflect cross-modal interactions between senses allowing to assess a visual cortical hoerexcitability (VCH) by evaluating the fission and fusion illusions disruption. The aims of the present study were to explore whether SIFIs are perceived differently in patients with fibromyalgia as compared to healthy controls (HCs) and how migraine affects fission and fusion illusions in fibromyalgia. METHODS: A single flash (F) a
