Cardiac KATP channel activation during metabolic inhibition has been implicated in effects ranging from malignant arrhythmogenesis and sudden cardiac death to reduction in infarct size, preconditioning, and a more rapid recovery of contractile ability. Given these disparate consequences, and the repeated observation that KATP currents are altered under a wide variety of metabolically stressful conditions, it becomes increasingly more critical to determine whether the changes described are part of the underlying pathology, or whether they reflect an endogenous adaptation to protect cardiac func

To further elucidate possible central plastic adaptive processes during the recovery from a unilateral peripheral vestibular lesion, we investigated vestibular functions in humans over a period of 2 months after an acute unilateral labyrinthine lesion. A unilateral peripheral vestibular lesion creates both a tonic imbalance that causes spontaneous nystagmus and a decrease and directional asymmetry of dynamic vestibular responses. We establish that the tonic imbalance expressed by the spontaneous nystagmus rapidly decreased (similar to other species), whether the lesion remained complete or not

Aquaculture in saline environments is expanding worldwide, but elevated salinity can alter growth performance and physiological homeostasis in cultured fish. Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is a euryhaline freshwater species widely used in salinity tolerance research and aquaculture production. Here, this study evaluated whether dietary mannitol improves salinity adaptation in tilapia. Fish (1.86 ± 0.04 g) were fed isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets containing 0, 1, 2, 5 or 10% mannitol for 8 weeks under freshwater or 20‰ salinity conditions. The results revealed that salinity treatmen

Plants produce a multifunctional assortment of specialized metabolites that play important roles in defense, environmental adaptation, and ecological interactions. Among these compounds, acylsugars, nonvolatile metabolites produced primarily in glandular trichomes of Solanaceae species, have emerged as informative model systems for understanding plant surface chemistry. Differences in acyl chain length, branching pattern, saturation, and attachment position generate extensive chemical diversity that influences herbivore deterrence, pathogen resistance, and the physicochemical properties of lea

The Lyon Consensus 2.0, published in 2023, provides an updated diagnostic framework for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), emphasizing objective physiological testing and introducing the concept of "actionable GERD" to guide individualized therapy. This review evaluates the clinical applicability of this framework in Asia, where normative values require regional adaptation. Given limited access to physiological testing in primary care, an endoscopy-based strategy may be considered due to its greater availability, helping overcome diagnostic barriers. Key updates include recognizing Los An

INTRODUCTION: Treatment outcomes for PTSD with current psychological therapies are poor, with very few patients achieving sustained symptom remission. A number of authors have identified physiological and immune disturbances in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) patients, but there is no unifying hypothesis that explains the myriad features of the disorder.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The medical literature was reviewed over a 6-year period primarily using the medical database PUBMED.
RESULTS: The literature contains numerous papers that have identified a range of physiological and immune dysf

Drought stress conditions modify source-sink relations, thereby influencing plant growth, adaptive responses, and consequently crop yield. Invertases are key metabolic enzymes regulating sink activity through the hydrolytic cleavage of sucrose into hexose monomers, thus playing a crucial role in plant growth and development. However, the physiological role of invertases during adaptation to abiotic stress conditions is not yet fully understood. Here it is shown that plant adaptation to drought stress can be markedly improved in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) by overexpression of the cell wal

Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is used as a noninvasive tool for cognitive enhancement and clinical applications. The physiological effects of tACS, however, are complex and poorly understood. Most studies of tACS focus on its ability to entrain brain oscillations, but our behavioral results in humans and extracellular recordings in nonhuman primates support the view that tACS at 10 Hz also affects brain function by reducing sensory adaptation. Our primary goal in the present study is to test this hypothesis using blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) imaging in human subjec

The amphibian Xenopus laevis can adapt the color of its skin to the light intensity of the background. A key peptide in this adaptation process is alpha-melanophore-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH), which is derived from proopiomelanocortin (POMC) and released by the endocrine melanotrope cells in the pituitary pars intermedia. In this study, the presence of alpha-MSH in the brain, cranial placode derivatives, and retina of developing Xenopus laevis was investigated using immunocytochemistry, to test the hypothesis that POMC peptide-producing neurons and endocrine cells have a common embryonic

Climate-driven increases in water limitation are expected to threaten ecosystem functioning and services. However, the extent to which ecosystems are water-limited remains uncertain due to the interplay of external CO2 physiological forcing and internal adaptation mechanisms. Here, we develop a unified ecosystem limitation index that quantifies the relative limitation of water and energy on key ecosystem functions and show that climate-driven water limitation on vegetation growth and carbon uptake is effectively mitigated by CO2 physiological effects. Consequently, projected expansion of water

PHYSIOLOGICAL OR PATHOLOGICAL ? Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) is defined by the rise of gastric contents into the esophagus, with or without externalization. GER is very common in young infants, with a peak around 4 months, and most often physiological due to high milk intakes and inappropriate relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter. Evoking a GER disease (GERD) is not always obvious due to signs of poor specificity (crying, irritability, regurgitation). On the other hand, one should not miss warning signs evocative of GERD complicated by esophagitis or of recurrent upper respiratory or

Candida tropicalis is a human pathogen and one of the most prevalent non-Candida albicans Candida (NCAC) species causing invasive infections. Azole antifungal resistance in C. tropicalis is also gradually increasing with the increasing incidence of infections. The pathogenic success of C. tropicalis depends on its effective response in the host microenvironment. To become a successful pathogen, cellular metabolism, and physiological status determine the ability of the pathogen to counter diverse stresses inside the host. However, to date, limited knowledge is available on the impact of carbon

Adolescence is a period of substantial maturation in brain regions underlying Executive Functioning (EF). Adolescence is also associated with initiation and escalation of Alcohol Use (AU), and adolescent AU has been proposed to produce physiological and neurobiological events that derail healthy EF development. However, support has been mixed, which may be due to (1) failure to consider co-occurring externalizing symptoms (including other drug use) and poor social adaptation, and (2) heterogeneity and psychometric limitations in EF measures. We aimed to clarify the AU-EF association by: (1) di

Physiological adaptation of intracellular bacteria is critical for timely interaction with eukaryotic host cells. One mechanism of adaptation, the stringent response, is induced by nutrient stress via its effector molecule (p)ppGpp, synthesized by the action of RelA/SpoT homologues. The intracellular pathogen Brucella spp., causative agent of brucellosis, possesses a gene homologous to relA/spoT, named rsh, encoding a (p)ppGpp synthetase as confirmed by heterologous complementation of a relA mutant of Sinorhizobium meliloti. The Rsh deletion mutants in Brucella suis and Brucella melitensis wer

The cold desert ecosystem of the trans-Himalayan Ladakh region presents extreme micro-environmental challenges that shape plant physiological responses and ecological distribution. This study examined the photosynthetic performance and photoprotective mechanisms of four co-occurring plant species, viz. Christolea crassifolia, Nepeta floccosa, Rheum australe, Tanacetum gracile, and their comparison with a widely adapted native species, Lepidium latifolium to study the adaptive strategies supporting their ecological amplitude. L. latifolium exhibited significantly (p ≤ 0.05) lower PN rates compa

BACKGROUND: Cold stress is a major environmental constraint limiting wheat productivity worldwide. Although numerous cold-responsive pathways have been identified, the molecular basis of differential cold tolerance among genetically related wheat lines remains poorly understood. In this study, two wheat sibling lines derived from a single progeny plant of the same parental cross, Luyan951 (cold-tolerant) and Luyan955 (cold-sensitive), were employed to investigate the regulatory mechanisms of cold adaptation through integrated physiological, transcriptomic, and metabolomic analyses.

Triokinase/FMN cyclase (TKFC) is a bifunctional enzyme that catalyzes both ATP-dependent triose phosphorylation and the formation of riboflavin 4',5'-cyclic phosphate (cFMN) from FAD, thereby linking fructose and flavin metabolism through a single protein. Structural modeling supports a model of TKFC as a conformationally dynamic homodimer in which interacting K and L domains cooperate through composite intersubunit active sites to support both kinase and cyclase reactions. Beyond its classical role in fructose metabolism, TKFC has emerged as a determinant of fructose-derived carbon partitioni
